October **2022** **TAR** 2 ## **Section C Objectives and activities** The objects of the CIO are: **Summary of the objects of the charity set out in its governing document** To promote art with particular reference to drawing; and To advance education with particular reference to drawing and by the establishment of a museum or gallery. The purpose of the Centre for Recent Drawings ( **C4RD** ) is to make space for drawing. C4RD is a non-commercial curatorial space in London, for the exhibition of recent drawing and providing access and discussion for current drawing practice, and to foster the audience for drawing within the general public. By maintaining the visibility of a characteristically humanist approach that is drawing – in the encouragement and refinement of the understanding of drawing, the arts and society at large can benefit. **Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)** C4RD seeks to facilitate access, research and dialogue for current drawing practice independent of structural forces in commercial and institutional settings. C4RD remains grateful to the many volunteers who assist in running the organisation. October **2022** **TAR** 4 ## Section D Achievements and performance ## **Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year** During the global health crisis, C4RD has been currently exhibiting online only, which for us is an extension of the Online Residencies we have hosted since 2004. The pandemic has also exacerbated structural inequalities in many societies across the world and given critical energy to the Black Lives Matter Movement. A key signature of this movement are the handdrawn protest signs held by protesters on marches held to achieve visibility and change. The hand-drawn (as opposed to printed) nature of these signs – often ad-hoc rather than overly designed – underline the lives lived that are effected in, or supportive of, the Black Lives Matter movement; what is communicated on these signs is not just the explicit message of protest, but the grass roots, personal response that drawing can provide. We are asking our audience to supply examples of signs that they have witnessed at or made for these marches, which we can then supply as part of the ‘Signs of Protest’ exhibition.
