## **Introduction** 

The Trustees of Education 2000 are pleased to present the annual report for the year ending April 2025. Despite significant funding challenges, we remain resolutely committed to advancing the education and wellbeing of children, young people and parents, particular those of African Caribbean heritage in Huddersfield. 

## **Governance and Management** 

Education 2000 is governed by a constitution adopted on 01June 2005 and amended 17 March 2018. The charity is managed by a dedicated committee of volunteers, all of whom balance their charitable responsibilities alongside their professional commitment 

## **Aims and objectives** 

Our principal aim is to advance education through social and cultural activities, including the performing arts. We offer young people opportunities to engage in singing, performing, songwriting and recording, thereby fostering creativity and self-expression.

## **Activities and Achievements** 

Although limited funding precluded our participation in a certain activities, we successfully enabled young people to take part in Holmfirth and Mirfield carnivals, thanks to the support of partner organisations. These experiences were particularly meaningful for those participating for the first time. We managed to continue with our Summer holiday scheme, which remains invaluable to parents and carers facing childcare challenges. 

Our involvement in the Deighton carnival, a local community event, attracting a large crosssection of our community representing a diverse background and Beaumont Park Family Funday, further strengthened community ties and provided enriching experiences for participants. 

Our longstanding partnership with Lawrenc Batley Theatre on various projects, has allowed children, free tickets, to attend annual pantomimes. 

Many of the young people have also had the opportunity to perform with Jam Rock productions theatre company which mounts a production at the LBT annually. This is not only exciting, but also build confidence and self esteem. 

## **Huddersfield Black Empowerment Programme (HBEP)** 

A highlight of the year was the launch Huddersfield Black Empowerment Programme (HBEP), funded by the National Lottery. This pilot initiative addresses a number of serious issues, such as systematic inequalities in education, employment and mental health among young Black people. Through enterprise workshops, employability support and one-to-one mentoring, we supported 434 young men, equipping them with vital skills and fostering peer mentorship and community leadership. 

Workshops included: 

- African cuisine 

- Cultural heritage 

- Mental Health 

- Conflict resolution and self preservation 

- Self expression 

- Employability and career support 

- Enterprise development and mentoring 

Through these workshops, the young people gained valuable skills in CV preparation, Interview, job application and job seeking confidence. These facilitated business ideas and action plans, provided consistent personalised guidance, sparked innovation and fostered long-tern aspirations. 

## **Community Impact** 

Our efforts have contributed to a 60% reduction in crime, as reported by the Kirklees Community Partnership and have helped build stronger intergenerational family units and greater community cohesion. We remain deeply connected to the grassroots issues affecting our community and are committed to taking action where it is needed.

## **Case studies and Partnerships** 

The HBEP project has inspired new ventures, such as start-up aimed at empowering young people through education and networking. Our work is amplified through partnerships with organisations, including: 

- National Careers Service, 

- Black Brotherhood Empowerment 

- Black Business Support Agency (BBSA) 

- Kirklees Local Television (KLTV) 

- North Huddersfield Trust School 

- Preventing Mental Trauma 

- Conflict Resolution 

- Huddersfield African Community Foundation 

Interesting and exciting case studies came out of the HBEP project, one such example being a start-up business aiming to empower young people through education, guidance and connections. This young man was empowered to speak at two well-attended networking events, encouraging him to take steps toward his goals, with an increased sense of confidence and self-belief. 

## **Future Plans** 

Looking forward, we aim to address the trauma experienced by young people affected by violence, expand our support for young Black women to ensure gender inclusivity as well as re-establishing our Saturday supplementary school, to counter systemic racism and promote Black history and heritage. A robust fundraising strategy is essential to sustain and expand our activities. 

We will continue to keep checks on participants in order to track long-term progress. 

## **Funding** 

Activities are funded by fundraising efforts and support through donations, which fund our Projects. We are presently applying to the Windrush Funds for a project in June, as well as funding to run our Summer playscheme, mount a production and participate in both the Huddersfield and Deighton carnivals. 

The Pilot phase of HBEP, which was a huge success, has been made possible by funding from the National Lottery, none of which would have happened without their help and support. Their investment in our community is literally helping to save lives and, creating brighter futures, not just for individuals but families and communities across Huddersfield. We look forward to continuing this project. 

## **Conclusion** 

Through funding, Education 2000 will endeavour to continue to support the community and, through projects such as HBEP, which isn’t just about changing lives, but transforming communities. Through culturally grounded youth-led, impact-focussed delivery, we feel that this project has created new hope and practical progression. From reducing crime and improving mental health, to launching businesses, it has become a catalyst for long-term change.

We remain committed to building a future for Black young people to thrive, whether it be performing arts, attending the supplementary school and holiday schemes, working with the local theatre, participation in Mrs Sunderland Music Festival.
