achievements

during the year|||Conditions
in Slobozia where the work ofthe charity
is based have been
extremely
challenging
in the year ofthis report. The area was affected by
COVID restrictions
throughout
the year. In addition to this in March of last
year we were suddenly
given 2weeks notice to leave the premises
in| ||||which our residential
unit is based.| ||||The unit which belongs to Child protection
services was to be refurbished| ||||with an EU grant —it transpired
that part ofthe conditions
ofthe grant| ||||excluded
residential
care ofchildren
in the refurbished
unit.| ||||Our Romanian
team rose to the challenge
negotiated
a longer transition| ||||time and we eventually
moved to a nearby village Slobozia htoua where| ||||we were given space in an abandoned
orphanage.| ||||The accommodation
did not have adequate
toilet or cooking facilities so| ||||the senior staff set to work to make this older building
more suitable for| ||||our severely disabled
children.
A wet room toilets and a kitchen were| ||||installed
and although
not ideal they made the building
habitable,
even if| ||||this was more cramped
than we were used to. There was no office space| ||||and they have managed
to install a small office for the chief nurse.| ||||The previous
building
was on the ground
floor and located
in a public| ||||park where the children
could be taken.
It also had a garden
in which| ||||disabled
play equipment
was installed.| ||||We have managed
to move much ofthe equipment
to the new site and| ||||have succeeded
in getting a grant to install storage facilities
in a| ||||specifically converted
container
unit, which we had delivered
to the new| ||||site.| ||||Despite the difficulties the community
work continued
even
ifthis was not| ||||as much as we would have wished.
For example firewood was delivered| ||||to families
in the district around
us who would otherwise
not be able to| ||||heat their homes adequately
during the winter.
Particularly
important
for| ||||the families we support
with disabled
children.| ||||There are still many challenges —the accommodation
is on the first floor| ||||and there are real difficulties
in getting the more disabled
children
into the| ||||garden as there is no lift.| ||||Once again the Romanian
staff have loyally supported
the charity| ||||through
some tough times, but the future ofthe charity
is dependent
on| ||||being able to secure security oftenure —the current
building
belongs to| ||||the county council and although
it may be possible to come to an| ||||arrangement
