Appointment of Independent Examiner I am just approaching the end of my second year as DC (or Lead Volunteer as you’ll know me from now on!) and I still absolutely love the role. Every day is different, with new challenges and things to be proud of. Our census numbers have grown yet again with youth membership up by 12% and adult membership up by 25%. We have opened another Beaver Colony at 10[th] Kendal and a Squirrel Drey at Grange and Cartmel, both are doing incredibly well. We’ve had a great programme of District events including St. Georges Day at Great Tower, Scouts Taskmaster Camp, a Cubs trip to Eureka and our first Beaver and Cub sleepovers in a few years. There are still a few events coming up this year including the County Cooking Competition tomorrow and a Beavers trip to Blackpool Zoo in October. Next year’s programme is also looking great with a few new events being introduced. I’d like to thank Richard Hirst and his team for arranging these events. We’ve had two international trips this summer with Explorers heading out to the World Scout Jamboree in South Korea and to Harlem Jamborette in the Netherlands. You’ll be hearing more about that later on. Our provision for watersports at Killington Reservoir is going from strength to strength. We can now offer sailing, canoeing, kayaking, raft building and paddleboarding. Our young people have taken part in over 500 hours of activity on the water this year. Isn’t that just amazing! This would not have happened without the dedication of _**Toby Hubbard**_ , so I’d like to say a huger thanks to Toby for this. As you’ve probably heard, we’re going through a period of transformation in Scouts nationally. A change to where we work more in teams and make things generally easier for our volunteers. I won’t steal Neil’s thunder too much, as you’ll hear more about that shortly. All that’s left for me to say is a huge thank you to all of you and your teams for everything that you do, and everything that you are going to do to help the young people of our District. I don’t think you get thanked enough. We know that the young people in Scouting, and perhaps their parents too, do not understand the amount of time, enthusiasm and effort that is given by the volunteer adults in the Scout Movement. It is absolutely right that we are careful with the training and guidelines (rules!) to ensure that Scouting is safe for everyone. Therefore, like last year, I start by thanking those adults involved at Group and District level for their dedication. This includes leadership teams and background committees. _**Damian King**_ our Lead Volunteer has been very hardworking and an inspiration. Most people do not realise the number of telephone calls and emails he receives. He has with him a great District Team, virtually all of whom have responsibilities within Groups as well. - Damian has reported on the number of District events for all age groups Squirrels, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers, Young Leaders and adults too. Whilst not actually within the time frame for this Annual Meeting, I want to mention the wonderful experiences of some of our Explorers at the World Scout Jamboree and also the International Camp at Haarlem in Holland. The extra work particularly of _**Toby Hubbard**_ and _**Richard Hirst**_ at Killington has been superb. We now have an excellent water activities base with good equipment. The facility has been updated with many young people having their first and ongoing experience. The District has further plans for Killington. Our finances are in good order and well within Charity Commission guidelines. My thanks to _**Roger Downing**_ , our Treasurer and our Independent Examiner _**Alan Fleming**_ . We reintroduced the District Levy which barely covers the costs of running the District. This will have to be reviewed. I am grateful to the members of the District Committee in the last year: As well as myself, _**Damian King**_ (DC), _**Roger Downing**_ (Treasurer), _**Linda Bowden**_ , _**Becky Coates**_ , _**Bill Davison**_ , _**Angela Frost**_ , _**Ste Gilbert**_ , _**Richard Hirst, Toby Hubbard**_ , _**Josh McLeod**_ , _**Victoria Mitchell**_ , _**Michael Ryan**_ and _**Val Yeadon**_ . The challenges ahead are changes to the Scout database, amendments to the adult training programme, and with it far more requirements to make Scouting safe, yet as fun and exciting as ever. I became District Chairman at the AGM in 2015. Now it is time for me to step back from that role.
