## **Objectives and Activities**

_**“Empowering dancers with confidence, education & experience”**_

Danzaction Charity 1123086 **Annual Report of the Trustees** Year Ending 31st July 2021

**2**

To advance the education of pupils and students at The Big Dance Company by assisting in the provision and resources and equipment not otherwise provided.

On furtherance of the above objective and ancillary to it the Association will:

- a. Enable members to meet and to correspond to facilitate the exchange of ideas respecting the support to the dancers;

- b. Provide support to dancers of The Big Dance Company which develop the skills.

- c. To assist in the provision of resources for all dancers by providing support for costumes, transport to events, dance tuition fees and any other associated resources as decided upon between the Association Committee and needs of The Big Dance Company founder.

- d. Provide support in the interest of social welfare for people in particular, but not exclusively in the area of benefit who need reason for their youth, age, infirmity or disability, poverty or social and economic circumstances with a view to improving the conditions of life of such means or ability.

- e. Provide a safe space for the wellbeing & education for individuals regardless of age, gender, race, religion & ability by supporting our community through the medium of dance & the arts. Income generated through grants and community fundraisers help support & include deprived & vulnerable families while generating employment opportunities for young people.

## **Achievements and Performance**

During the current financial period we have focused mainly on supporting young people and families in the 30% most deprived and vulnerable communities (IMD 2019), tackling inequalities in times of crisis, including:

**Dance Bursaries** . Having raised a substantial amount of funds for the benefit of the public, the trustees are grateful to have been able to provide opportunities for many young people from deprived and vulnerable communities in Cornwall, during the greatest pandemic to affect the majority both economically and socially.

Many families who could not afford for their children to continue to attend social activities, such as dance were provided with bursaries so that they could continue maintaining their health and fitness, developing skills and above all, having social interaction with peers, reported by parents and carers to have improved their chids’ mental health and wellbeing as well as provide respite to parents / carers and siblings.

## **Open dance sessions for young people from deprived and vulnerable**

**communities** . The trustees are delighted with the uptake from families whose children may otherwise not have an opportunity to take part in out of school activities. The inclusive dance sessions which run on a Friday evening as part of a diversion strategy, facilitates

young people in doing something positive with their peers during a timeframe where the risk of being exposed to antisocial or criminal activity is at its highest. Once benefitting from a similar activity as a young child many years ago the group leader now inspires others with her success story as a self employed dance instructor, performer and choreographer. This project continues with further funding and hopes to provide further training and employment opportunities for more young people.

**‘I AM’ Immersive, thought provoking movie and workshops. Through the medium of dance, the aim being to raise awareness of Mental Health in young people by bringing the subject to a safe, open, and non-judgemental place where young people can express themselves, create, discuss, observe, inspire and be inspired by others.** Being able to support this important project allowed young people to become aware of their own Mental Health and of that in their peers, enabling them to manage, express and talk to others about this difficult topic.

Surprisingly a staggering amount of young people were confident in sharing with the group leaders and peers their own experiences with and feelings about Mental Health. Enlightened by the number of young people suffering in silence or not even being aware of their issues, many schools and centres have since requested the delivery of the bespoke workshops.

## **Regard to Public Beneft**

Trustees have given full regard to public benefit when applying funds raised for a specific purpose, some of which include:

- Raising funds towards a new community centre to further continue the delivery of a wide range of activities for the general public.

- Funding or part funding dance tuition fees, resources and other related activities to members of the general public including, but not restricted to young people of The Big Dance Company.

- Providing funds for regular, free dance sessions within the area of benefit, improving lives and tackling inequalities in deprived and vulnerable communities.

- Facilitating the provision of activities in local schools and providing a safe space for young people to express themselves through the medium of dance and the arts.

## **Plans for the future**

The current pandemic presents significant challenges to organisations and activity providers across the nation, but with the support of government and private grants along with fundraising initiatives we plan to continue to provide financial support to vulnerable and deprived communities in our area of public benefit, providing opportunities to take part in

dance, arts and their related activities and in doing so this will further advance the aims and objectives outlined in our constitution.

## **Financial Review**

As reflected in the Statement of Financial Activities, the charity had net incoming resources for the year of _£71960.00_ made up from the following principle funding sources which support the key objectives of the charity structure.

**Outreach dance classes:** Directly benefiting in excess of _25 families_ from deprived and vulnerable communities.

- ●Sported granted _£2246.00_ for the ‘Helping Hand Project’; a fully funded one hour per week dance session, delivered over the course of 20 weeks including: Dance instructor, assistant, project manager & monitoring, uniform, cleaning, PPE, marketing and hall hire. - ●Local Giving Magic Little Stars granted _£500.00_ with the initial intention to take dance lessons into rural communities around Cornwall, however due to further pandemic restrictions it was decided between the trustees and the grant givers that the funds were best used in a more isolated and covid secure location within the dance inclusion project in Penzance, where a further 8 weeks of sessions were delivered from July 2021 (into the next fnancial period).

**Supporting dancers of The Big Dance Company and providing employment opportunities for young people:** Directly benefiting approximately _150 families_ from deprived and vulnerable communities, during the height of the pandemic.

- ●Cornwall Community Fund granted _£4500.00_ from the Cornwall Emergency Fund which provided financial support for The Big Dance Company to provide scholarships for dance and other related activities to their members who would have otherwise not been able to take part due to the economic and social impact caused by the pandemic. Online memberships of April 2020 were reduced by 50% across the board and in some isolated cases a full scholarship was granted.

   - The ability to continue delivering online sessions during lockdown also provided employment opportunities for sub-contractual instructors. Funds spent between April 2021 and September 2021 ( _Total funds spent successfully_ ).

- ●Training and qualification in Acrobatic Arts provided for a young person with training to become a professional instructor.

## **‘I AM’ Immersive movie and workshops:**

- _£3385.00_ granted by U-Do It Foundation provided funds to support the creation, and edit the movie which was made available, initially to professionals working within and around the field of mental health in young people then later, on their merit was aired free of charge on youtube.
