Our aims remain the same for 2019: To give the deaf child the opportunity to develop through play and leisure experiences.
• To identify deaf children as “Children in Need” in accordance with the Children Act (1989) and to offer opportunities in accordance with those needs. We feel that we continue to achieve this. Trustee changes:
Davut has decided to step down after many years of being a trustee for Deaf-SELF. We wish him all the best with his future ventures. We have now been joined by Ela Yilmaz. We feel that Ela will make a great addition to our team. Annie O’Shea has changed her role, and has returned to the position of treasurer.
Chair: Ms Jessica Kerry Wilde Treasurer: Miss Annie O’Shea Secretary: Miss Ela Yilmaz Trustee: Ms Lorraine Robinson
Deaf-SELF Playscheme:
Playscheme has had another good year, with many new arrivals! Sadly, we were forced to close two of our playscheme holiday clubs due to the pandemic, however we instead offered sessions on Zoom, to ensure that the children were not isolated. We then reopened at a limited capacity, however we hope to be able to fully open our doors again, in the very near future. The pandemic has caused a really negative impact on the young Deaf community, therefore it is important that we can return with a “full steam ahead” approach, as soon as permissible.
Activities – The children have enjoyed a fun assortment of activities, including a trip to quasar, bowling, Thorpe Park and many other exciting places. The children have also been developing their creative skills as we have been hosting many more arts and crafts session in our venue.
Youth Leadership Project
The YLP project is for ages 13-25. We use this as a follow on from Playscheme so that they can attend workshops and continue to develop their skills. The numbers have been steady, seeing both local independent youths as well Remark! Living clients. The aim for this project is to build up their confidence, give them all important life skills as well encourage independent living. We have been on a couple of trips as well as hosting workshops and sports sessions. The trips included our annual trip to Brighton for a day of beach volleyball, bowling, a team building adventure and Leeds Castle, which has become a new favourite!
Football Club:
2020 was of course, quite unpredictable. Due to the pandemic, the football club was closed for quite some time, due to the facilities not being open, and their staff being furloughed. Once permitted, we reopened with such enthusiasm, in order to restore fitness for the young people that we support, since many of them have not left their houses, meaning that their overall health has been severely impacted.
Finances & Funds:
Policy on reserves: Due to our size, we don’t have a reserve policy. We rely on ongoing funding and have no assets. All reserve monies travel on to the next financial year, to be used in maintaining staff and activities for our children.
Sponsors list: Children in Need Garfield Weston Attendance money from Deaf children attending the play scheme Staff, members and members of the general public, from sponsored events throughout the year
Plans for the future:
We have reapplied for a continuation of our BBC Children in Need funding. We are hoping that this will be a success, enabling us to continue with our playscheme project for the next 3 years. We also plan to host a series of fun, fundraising events, enabling us to build on our unrestricted funds. We will be applying for a variety of small “project specific” grants, in order for us to safely continue the projects that we provide, without the concern of financial stability always looming at the forefront of every decision. We also plan for 2021-2022 to be a much more positive year than 2020! Here’s hoping!
