OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES
Main activities
The World Federation for NeuroRehabilitation (WFNR) is a multidisciplinary organisation which stimulates the exchange of knowledge and scientific research between clinicians and others with an interest in the field. WFNR collaborates with other clinical and scientific societies to enhance the impact of neurorehabilitation for the benefit of patients.
Summary of main activities
The Federation continued its research and educational activities throughout 2024. The 13th World Congress for Neurorehabilitation was held in Vancouver, Canada, from 22–25 May. The event attracted more than 1,100 participants from over 50 countries.
The programme featured over 100 scientific sessions, including nine plenary talks, 15 oral sessions, 51 symposia, five joint symposia, six round tables, six Developing World Forum sessions, 19 workshops, three industry workshops, and one industry symposium.
A total of 870 abstracts were submitted, resulting in more than 110 oral presentations and 650 posters. The abstracts were later published online in WFNR’s official journal, Neurorehabilitation and Neural Repair .
WFNR continued its series of webinars and also participated in Brain Awareness Week (March), World Brain Day (July), and World Stroke Day (October). All webinars were free to attend and remain available to view on the WFNR website.
The 9th WFNR Franz Gerstenbrand Award was presented to Dr Christian Endisch for his research project Predicting Recovery After Resuscitation from Cardiac Arrest . Dr Endisch, a neurology resident at the Department of Neurology and Experimental Neurology, Charité Universitätsmedizin, Berlin, Germany, led a retrospective, international, multicentre study of 706 comatose cardiac arrest (CA) patients. His team examined cortical somatosensory evoked potential (SSEP) amplitudes using a standardised evaluation pathway.
The study’s findings will help determine appropriate treatment pathways: continuing treatment and neurorehabilitation when severe brain injury is absent, or withdrawing futile therapy when severe brain injury precludes meaningful recovery. This work highlights the importance of prognostic SSEP recordings at admission and during the neurorehabilitation process. The WFNR congratulated Dr Endisch and his team on their valuable contribution, which will guide difficult treatment decisions in this patient group.
Young WFNR (yWFNR) continued its activities during the year, with its mentorship programme attracting new members. A dedicated lunch was held at the World Congress in Vancouver, providing an opportunity for mentors and mentees to meet and exchange ideas.
WFNR also continued its collaboration with the WHO IGAP and advanced its work on Community-Based and Family-Based Neurorehabilitation .
The Federation’s partnership with SAGE Publications ensured that all WFNR members maintained free online access to its official journal, Neurorehabilitation and Neural Repair .
Finally, planning began for future activities in 2025 , including the 14th World Congress for Neurorehabilitation , to be held in Daegu, South Korea, in October 2026.

FINANCIAL REVIEW
Reserves policy
The charity aims to hold sufficient reserves to meet their objectives for a twelve month period.
Going concern
The financial statements have been prepared on the going concern basis as the trustees believe that no material uncertainties exist.
The Trustees have considered the level of funds held and the expected level of income and expenditure for twelve months from authorising these financial statements. The budgeted level of income and expenditure is sufficient with the level of reserves for the charity to continue as a going concern.
STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT
Governing document
The charity is controlled by its governing document, a deed of trust and constitutes an unincorporated charity.
Recruitment and appointment of new trustees
The WFNR is looking for experienced people who can take a global perspective on the field of neurological rehabiliation.

Independent Examiner's Report to the Trustees of World Federation for NeuroRehabilitation
Independent examiner's report to the trustees of World Federation for NeuroRehabilitation
I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of World Federation for NeuroRehabilitation (the Trust) for the year ended 31 December 2024.
Responsibilities and basis of report
As the charity trustees of the Trust you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 ('the Act').
I report in respect of my examination of the Trust's accounts carried out under Section 145 of the Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under Section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
Independent examiner's statement
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:
-
accounting records were not kept in respect of the Trust as required by Section 130 of the Act; or
-
the accounts do not accord with those records; or
-
the accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a true and fair view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources.
Tangible fixed assets
Depreciation is provided at the following annual rates in order to write off each asset over its estimated useful life.
Taxation
The charity is exempt from tax on its charitable activities.
Fund accounting
Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees.
