' – Chair s Report Jacqui Robinson
2020 was a year that was totally unexpected! I have felt so uplifted during our Exec Meetings to hear of how the leaders adapted to changing situations numerous times so much so that the whole of 5th Heswall has grown – the children, young people have really embraced Zoom but I’ve heard how much they’re enjoying being back outside and socializing. It’s been a difficult year for us all I am so proud of all the children, young people for the resilience they have shown.
Although we’ve been through multiple lock downs our group has still managed to hold a fund raiser, Lydia and Claire two of our parents on the Exec Committee ran a ’12 days of Christmas Quiz’. It was a roaring success and I think everyone that took part would like a chance to take part again – Thank you for your hard work it really is appreciated.
Looking after our Scout Hut with essential maintenance is important so we were lucky to have a sunny day in the Autumn between lockdowns when as a committee & family members we were able to get stuck in everyone worked really hard and huge thanks again for everyone’s hard work, also for deep cleaning prior to reopening of the hut on numerous occasions.
Huge thanks to Diane our group treasurer who works so hard to improve and maintain the finances of 5th Heswall – I’m sure you’ll see from the financial report what a great job she does.
I would like to send my biggest ‘Thanks’ to our Leaders and Young Leaders for their time, passion and inspiration. From how the unit is succeeding you can see how your hard work is enjoyed by the young people and children, they obviously talk to their friends about the fun that they have – well done and hopefully it won’t be long until normality can resume.
We are always looking for new adult members of 5th Heswall for the committee or as a parent helper within one of the sections, if you would like to get involved please contact one of the leaders or a member of the committee to see what is involved (it’s not too taxing, I really enjoy my role and it’s all for your children and gives us time to socialise as adults ).
We are hopeful that as normality resumes we will all be able to meet together for a social event – more details to follow.

’ – Treasurer s Report 2020 to 2021 Diane Barrowclough
An interesting year to report on. While we lost all the income from scout post this year which usually offsets our annual Capitation Fees (£3289) we have received £19,431 from Wirral Borough Council in the form of COVID grant support for Local Businesses (including Charities).
5[th] Heswall Scout Group is a registered charity and the charity ceases to function without fundraising. Aside from subscriptions we primarily achieve this by:
-
Leasing out the hall for a charitable donation in return: with only Amici Dance meeting this year this has raised £989.36.
-
Claiming of Gift Aid from the Cub and Scout subscriptions raised a further £881.25.
-
Your online spending has further increased the scout funds by £75 from Amazon Smile. Thanks go to those who support us through this route. Please remember us when online shopping – it costs the shopper nothing and raises vital funds for the group. Support 5[th] Heswall Scout Group on both www.smile.amazon.co.uk and www.easyfundraising.org.uk
The 12 Days of Christmas Quiz raised a whopping £360 and a donation by PQ Corporation (Warrington) brought the grand total to £500. Many thanks to all who took part, PQ Corporation however special thanks go to Claire Mellody and Lydia Harrison for organising the fantastic quiz at this busy time.
We had a sort-out of the rear stores and raised a further £85 by selling some surplus equipment.
Our 50/50 club has been running for 4 years. Uptake is still disappointingly low, with only two families plus virtually every member of the Scout Executive Committee participating. Nevertheless, it has raised £360 this year. We aim to spend the profits from this scheme on the young people and will organise a group event when we are able. Please join in with us, it’s just £2 per number per month. Contact me at treasurer@5thheswallscoutgroup.org.uk
A breakdown of income and expenditure and the total group funds is appended to the AGM report. I am happy to take any questions you may have about the accounts.

5[th] Heswall (Methodist) Scout Group
' – Group Scout Leader s Report Steve Pillow (GSL)
Well, what a year! No doubt an opening statement for anybody reviewing the past 12 months. As I write, the hall still stands empty but scouting at 5th Heswall has carried on and, indeed, managed to thrive. Oddly we have improved our financial situation despite lost rentals, due mainly to significant local authority Covid grants, but also the willingness of parents to continue to pay subs when we were hardly able to offer any activities for a few months. We are really grateful for this support at a time when things may have been increasingly tough for some.
As our leaders got to grips with Zoom our activities started again, particularly with Cubs, where it perhaps worked better for that age group than Scouts or Beavers. I attended a few cub evenings and observed the concentration and enthusiasm of the cubs, as well as the involvement of parents and sometimes siblings which was great to see. Scouts and Beavers also had some sessions but have been glad to restart face to face meetings as relaxation has started, and all made possible by Diane Barrowclough’s excellent risk assessments which are needed to get the approval of the District for each activity.
Our production line of new adult leaders continues apace. Hannah Back recently turned 18 and is going through the process of becoming an assistant cub scout leader. Katie Bastow will be following shortly and becoming an assistant scout leader. Our thanks and welcome to them both in their new roles - they have gone right through the group from Beaver age and we know their quality. I note we have other young leaders coming up to 18 during the year so maybe……?
On that note, congratulations to Sam Harrison who has been awarded his Young Leader belt.
A particular highlight for me was being asked to present Chief Scout Gold awards to four of our scouts recently. Aimee Mellody, Sophie Back, Josh Whiteley and William Hampshire became the first in the group, certainly in Andy’s time as scout leader, to achieve these and a great deal of commitment is required, so very well done to them. As I watched our younger adult leaders and young leaders run an evening for the scouts I became aware of the camaraderie and fun they were having. It occurred to me that, as youth clubs have largely died off for this generation, scouting has given a weekly opportunity for teenagers to get together in a safe and fun environment, away from screens, and hopefully our older scouts will continue to want to remain involved as young leaders in the future. With their skills and attitudes they will have an opportunity to be real leaders in society which will benefit many.

A welcome to Dave Durrant who joined as assistant cub scout leader in September. Dave has formed a great partnership with Duncan and they are very creative in their programme along with Carole and now Hannah. I also thank Clare, Michele and both Jasons for their commitment to Beavers, as well as Andy, Geoff, Di and (again) Jasons with Scouts. We remain full in numbers with a better leader/young person ratio.
Finally particular thanks first to Anil Horrocks-Madhok who is stepping down from his role as secretary to the Group Executive Committee after a few years’ service, and also to the other members of the exec who do a lot for us in the background
Steve Pillow GSL
– Scout Section Report Andy Back
The scout section has had a good year and currently we have 24 scouts and 7 young leaders.
Little did we know when taking part in the mystery hike at the end of March 2020 that it would be our last “proper” scouting event of that year.
We have all risen to the challenge of zoom meetings this year, with on average around 10 scouts participating each meeting. We have baked (pizza, cheesecake, bread, brownies, apple crumble, flapjacks, pasta, pancakes), made pop bottle rafts, carved pumpkins and made a model campsite. We attended virtual Wintercamp 2021. We have participated in challenges: Task Master, Dungeons & Dragons, Escape Rooms and not forgetting the Kahoot Quizzes! We awarded Chef and Local Knowledge activity badges plus various Challenge badges.
Kai was invested into the scout group during a zoom meeting.
We did manage to meet for two events: a cycle ride along the Wirral Way and an air rifle shooting evening.
The restart of our face-to-face scouting events saw me being able to award four Chief Scout Gold Awards. This is the first time I have been able to award this prestigious badge and my congratulations go to Joshua Whiteley, Aimee Mellody, William Hampshire and Sophie Back.

5[th] Heswall (Methodist) Scout Group
We have a full programme planned up to the start of summer. Let’s hope the weather stays fine and we can continue meeting on the school field
On a final note, none of this would be possible without the leader team of Geoff, Jason and Jason plus our young leaders Katie, Matthew, Sam, Isaac, Adam, Josh and Aimee. Special mention must go Diane for coming along to help, even though she isn’t a leader.
Andy Back SL
- Cub Section Report Duncan Clague
Another year has passed, and what an odd year it has been for us all. Numbers have been at a maximum for most of the year at 23 to 26 – with 3 Cubs going up to Scouts after the recent winter term. We have welcomed 8 new cubs in summer 2020, and have 4 new in to the group in recent weeks!
Whilst not in the normal or ideal circumstances, I’m delighted to say excellent achievements this year for Dylan, Harry and Will who have all gained their Chief Scout Silver Awards! Excellent attainment. Really well done and deserved for all your hard work and effort throughout cubs! Super cub trophies were awarded to Dylan, James Doherty, Alexander K and Noah H.
This is where I would usually write about last summer’s camp, however for the first time in a long time (probably forever) there was no summer camp! However, we’re keeping our fingers crossed we can go on summer camp this year!
Last summer, before the second lockdown we were able to meet outdoors in groups of up to 15. We visited the Brimstage Maize maze, which was super fun and loved

by all cubs! After another break due to COVID, we returned on Zoom and I have to say I was sceptical about doing scouting online, however I’ve been so pleased with how Zoom meets went and especially how engaged and committed the cubs were. The cubs were able to complete a host of badges online! One of the favourites was the chef badge, where the cubs cooked pizzas live on screen alongside Kaa (Dave). A huge thank you to Dave for managing the zoom sessions set up and many excellent evenings enjoyed online!
The cubs did a poster a while back on Personal Safety for the district competition prior to COVID lockdowns; The awards evening has still not yet been rescheduled, but well done to all cubs for their posters!
As mentioned, we did a whole host of badges on Zoom, some of which have not been done before or for a long time. We had a guest speaker for the astronomer badge, completed the Collectors, Global Issues and Home Help badges to name but a few.
Since being back face to face scouting, we have spent several weeks up at Heswall primary school and Royden park, where the cubs gained their gardening badge, pioneer badge, and also did some den building and outdoor art.
All in all, a difficult and challenging 12 months since my last report, but the level of interest and commitment has been superb, and the programme that has been delivered has been fulfilling; the cubs have continued to have fun and learn life skills, both on zoom and face to face.
One more note, Hannah Back who turned 18 recently, has been a young leader in cubs for around 4 years, and has now become an ACSL uniformed adult leader, and will take the jungle book name of Bagheera. Congratulations and thank you Hannah! I would like to pass on a Massive Thank You to Dave, Carole, Andy, Hannah, Josh & Isaac and Steve for their help on Monday evenings, and throughout the year. None of what we do would be possible without these great people who volunteer their own time week in week out for your children.
Hope to see you all soon, until then stay safe.
Many Thanks, Duncan CSL
– Beaver Section Report Clare Webster
The past year has been challenging for everyone. Michele and I decided that when we went into lockdown last March, we would not do meetings over zoom as we thought that Parents would have enough to deal with homeschooling etc.
12
5[th] Heswall (Methodist) Scout Group
Just before the schools finished for the summer term Michele and I visited each of our Beavers at home and provided them with individual packs, which had various activities for them to do at home over the summer holidays. Such as puzzles, quizzes etc.
When we returned after the summer break we started Zoom Meetings, which was not easy as this brought its own challenges as some of our Beavers didn't want to partake in these type of meetings. Eventually, all our Beavers joined these meetings each week. It was lovely to see the Beavers and catch up on what they had been doing each week at home and in school.
Before the beginning of each term, Michele and I visited each Beaver and gave them a pack that contained items for Badge work, which we could do over zoom. We did cake in a mug, made a Pizza, our experiment badge, growing cress and a sunflower. Made a catapult using lolly sticks, did a scavenger hunt, did a Kahoot quiz, did our disability Badge, did Lego building, played games such as the Bean Game and the Would You Rather Game over Zoom, which the Beavers enjoyed. We also enrolled a couple of new Beavers over Zoom just before Christmas, who joined us at the beginning of lockdown.
Michele and I also delivered to each Beaver at Christmas a Selection Box and at Easter, each Beaver received an Easter Egg.
We have currently got 15 Beavers of which 5 are new, who started in January and March 2021.
Now lockdown is easing, we have started to have our meetings outside and the Beavers are loving doing our outside meetings and it's great to see them having fun outdoors.
I would like to thank Michele Casey for her support over the past year, especially for setting up our weekly Zoom Meetings.
I would also like to thank Jason Barrowclough, Adam Grannell, Aimee Mellody for their help over the past few months. Michele and I appreciate all your hard work and enthusiasm you all bring to the meetings each week.
Finally, I would like to thank 5[th] Heswall Beavers and Parents / Carers who
continually support us each week and allow us to have a successful Beaver Colony.
