## **Objectives and Activities** 

Charitable Purpose: 

The  advancement  of  public  education  through  the  construction  and  operation  of models of engineering 

Activities Undertaken: 

During the financial year the charity carried out the following key activities to further its charitable objectives: 



- Gave nearly 6,000 model train rides to the general public during the Royal Bath and West show, on a mixture of steam diesel and electric locomotives made by the charity members. Members were also on hand to answer any questions from the public. 

- Ran the railway for a number of private closed events operated by the show ground. 

- The railway running days raised £22,224 to support our initiatives. 

- Gave engine driver training days to members of the public who applied. 

- Gave free train rides to the pupils parents and teachers of a number of local primary schools as part of local community engagement programme 

- Continued to grow and develop the junior club for under 16’s. A number of the juniors are now building their own steam engines with all materials and training supplied and funding by the charity 

- The railway has become a member of the Men’s Shed organisation to increase awareness on opportunity for membership and participation. 

- Ran a number of Santa special trains in December for local families to enjoy. 

## **Public Benefit Statement** 

The trustees confirm that they have complied with their duty to consider the Charity Commissions  guidance  on  public  benefit.  East  Somerset  Society  of  Model  and Experimental Engineers directly benefit the public by Education and training of young people in the building and running the railway. Running days for members of the public. Open Weekends for members of other model engineering societies. 

## **Financial Review** 

## Income and Expenditure: 

The  charity  received  a  total  income  of  £27,063  primarily  from  public  running. Expenditure totalled £24,733, with the main costs being: 

- Site rent insurance and maintenance £13,663 

- Building and maintaining engineering models £4,132 

- Administrative and operational costs £6,938 

## Reserves Policy: 

At the end of the year the charity held reserves of £34,662. The trustees aim to maintain reserves sufficient to cover three months operating costs to ensure financial stability and the ability to continue activities in unforeseen circumstances. 

Fundraising Activities 

The charity raised funds through a combination of 

- Public running £ 22,224 



- Subscriptions £3,140 

- Donations  £1,674 

- Interest  £25 

East  Somerset  Society  of  Model  and  Experimental  Engineers  adheres  to  ethical fundraising standards and maintains transparency in all financial dealings. 

**Structure, Governance, and management** 

Governing Document: 

East Somerset Society of Model and Experimental Engineers is governed by a charitable trust deed adopted on 6th February 2008. 

Trustee Recruitment: 

Trustees  are  recruited  based  on  their  expertise  and  commitment  to  the  charity’s mission. 

Risk Management: 

The trustees conduct regular risk assessments and have implemented measures to mitigate financial, operating, and safeguarding risks. The charity maintains appropriate insurance coverage for liabilities. 

## **Plans for the Future** 

In the coming year East Somerset Society of Model and Experimental Engineers aims to: 

- Expand the junior membership and activities. 

- Purchase a second steam locomotive for public running 

- Improve club facilities to improve the member experience

I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the Company for the year ended 31 / 03 / 2025 

Responsibilities and basis of report 

As the charity’s trustees of the Company (who are also the directors of the company for the purposes of company law), you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Companies Act 2006 (“the 2006 Act”). Having satisfied myself that the accounts of the Company are not required to be audited for this year under Part 16 of the 2006 Act and are eligible for independent examination, I report in respect of my examination of your charity’s accounts as carried out under section 145 of the Charities Act 2011 (“the 2011 Act”). In carrying out my examination, I have followed the Directions given by the Charity Commission (under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act.
