## Trustees' Annual Report

The Trustees present their annual report and financial statements for the year ended 31 May 2021 which are also prepared to meet the requirements for a trustees' report and accounts for the Charities Act purposes.

The financial statements comply with the Charities Act 2011, the Constitution

and Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standards for Smaller Entities.

## **Governing Document**

The Charity is operated under the rules of its constitution dated 27 March 2007. Overall management of the charity is the responsibility of the trustees who are elected and co-opted under the terms of the constitution. Day to day project activity is managed and carried out by volunteers.

## **Aims and Objectives**

Its objectives are; "the promotion of community participation in healthy recreation in particular by the provision of facilities for playing the game of basketball."

## **Activities**

The principal activities of the charity include;

- q providing opportunities for women and girls of all ages to play

- basketball and develop a healthy and ethical lifestyle

- **q helping all members achieve their full potential, raise standards**

- of health and well being, develop self confidence, team working, communication skills and leadership ability

## **Performance and Achievements**

The club returned to action in September 2021 after a long break due to Covid 19. A number of junior members did not return after such a long break but the club was able to compete again and ran the following teams:

- U10s in local competition

- U12s in local competition

- U14s - National League (Basketball England)

- U16s – National League (Basketball England) – League Runners Up/Play Off Semi

- Finalists

- U18s – National League (Basketball England) – Play Off Semi Finalists

- Division 2 (Basketball England) – North Div Runners-Up/Play Off Champions

- WBBL (Professional) – 3[rd] in the league/Cup Final semi finalists

The club has had a number of junior and senior players representing GB this season in international competition. The club was represented at U16 level through to both Senior and Masters. Head Coach Vanessa Ellis also flew the flag for the club as Assistant Coach to the GB Senior Women.

The club celebrated its 60[th] year in 2022, the oldest women’s basketball club in the UK which is testament to the management and volunteers that make up the Trustees and core members of the club. However, the year was also one of sadness as the club lost its Chairman and founder member Betty Codona OBE who died suddenly on Fri 18 Mar, after a short illness. The 60[th] celebration fundraising dinner in March was quickly turned into a **tribute to Betty who made everything possible as the club would not be where it was today** if it wasn’t for her passion, commitment and drive! She has left a massive gap within the club but also a fantastic legacy!

## Independent Examiner's report to the trustees of

## City of Sheffield Hatters Basketball Club for the year ended 31 May 2022

I report on the accounts of the City of Sheffield Hatters Basketball Club for the year ended 31 May 2022 which are set out on pages 6 to 8.

## **Respective responsibilities of the Trustees and the examiner**

The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts.

The charity's trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year (under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act)) and that an independent examination is needed.

It is my responsibility to:

- q examine the accounts under section 145 of the 2011 Act;

- q to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145 (5)(b) of the 2011 Act; and

- q to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

## **Basis of independent examiner's report**

My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity

Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records.

kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters.

The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a "true and fair view" and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

## **Independent examiner's statement**

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention

- 1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:

   - q to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the 2011 Act; and

   - q to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and to comply with the accounting requirements of the 2011 Act

have not been met; or

- 2) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

## Notes to the accounts

## for the year ended 31 May 2022

## **1 Receipts and payments accounts**

Because the level of income and expenditure is below £250,000, the group has opted for accounts prepared on a receipts and payments rather than an accruals basis.

This is in line with Charity Commissioners guidelines for small charities and is seen as more appropriate for this project.
