Section D Achievements and performance

Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year

It has been an interesting year and much has changed in the club since the last AGM. Jeff Upton has temporarily picked up the baton of Commodore in what has been some challenging times. As with many clubs and societies, HSC needs to change with the times, and this is something the Committee has been diligently working on behind the scenes. One of the significant challenges facing our club is the ongoing application to the Charities Commission to migrate the club to what is called a ‘ Charitable Incorporated Organisation ’ (CIO). This brings with it several benefits in taking the club forward. The initial application was rejected on the grounds that fishing is a non-charitable sport. Advice was sought from the RYA and the committee agreed to appoint an RYA recommend law firm to act on our behalf. A APEX Angling Ltd company has been created as a subsidiary. Subsequently a revised application has now been submitted to the Charities Commission and we are hoping to hear if we have been successful in late February. There is still some work to do on the various legal documents that will establish the operating Framework between HSC and the newly formed APEX Angling. So what else have we been up to:- Racing – When we look back over the years the effects of COVID can be clearly seen which as you can imagine had a big impact on turnout. Sunday and Wednesday evening racing shows a return to almost pre 2019 levels after the dip in 2020 and 2021. One day events also show a healthy recovery from the COVID dip with the average turnout the highest it’s been since 2010. The Frostbite, shows a significant increase over previous years with the turnout at its highest since we started collecting data. This might suggest that whatever the weather, members want to get back out on the water. This return to the water and more specifically participation in the racing may be as a result of the various training sessions that have been run last year. The Junior section has flourished with 18 sessions not hampered by the weather and allowing our young people to develop their sailing skills. Several new boats have been added to the fleet allowing much needed progression, including single and 2 crew boats. Some of the Juniors have now even bought their own boats and are actively seen racing and mixing it up with the grownups. The coaching for all initiative has also seen a lot of interest, often over running with extended sessions. Many of these new sailors are now actively participating in the race training and have even bought their own boats. Our experienced sailing members have welcomed the young people into the racing scene and can often be heard offering advice out on the water and occasionally ‘taking avoiding action’ as one should. We are truly a family focused club. This coming year we will continue to afford a smooth transition from the juniors, coaching, race training leading to recognised RYA qualifications in the form of the RYA L1 and L2 certification.

Section D Achievements and erformance p

As in previous years we held RYA L1 and L2 courses for beginners and experienced sailor volunteers helped to support this. 22 people participated with half a dozen (ish) now regular visitors to the club becoming members. A newly appointed social secretary, has brought a new lease of life to the social side of the club encouraging members to get to know each other and share skills. The Christmas Party and prizegiving was also huge success. Hidden heroes – A club like HSC would struggle to operate without a significant amount of work going on behind the scenes. Everything from minor repairs, clearing slipways, de-pooping the decking, this all happens quietly and efficiently by the die-hard Wednesday gang … along with a lot of tea drinking. I would like to thank all and every one of the club members that contribute in their own way to ensuring the smooth operation of the club. It is with sadness that we recognise the massive contribution of Roy Westlake and Derek Bunnage who have recently passed away. Both being instrumental in the development of the club and will be sadly missed. We continued to support the activities of LDSA and Hykeham Sailability. Our primary objective for 2023 is to complete the CIO application and the operating arrangements with its Trading Subsidiary Apex Angling Ltd. We will also focus on the lease renewal discussions with Fisher-German and Cemex. Clearly it is very important we establish a secure a long lease, thereafter we can consider more capital expenditure projects, which currently have been placed on hold. We would like to thank everyone that has volunteered during the year and continues to give of themselves both time and support as we enter another year at HSC.
