Structure, Governance and Management:

a. Governing document

The Charity is an association governed by its constitution.

b. Method of appointment and induction of new Trustees

New Trustees are appointed by the members of the charity at a general meeting and are briefed on their legal obligations under charity law, the content of the charity's constitution, and its recent performance.

c. Organisational structure and decision making

The Charity is UK based and its office is in Nottingham, having no partner organisations. The board of Trustees oversee the running of the charity on a day to day basis. All operational decisions are made at board meetings which are held frequently through the year.

d. Risk Management

The Trustees have assessed the major risks to which the charity is exposed and are satisfied that systems and procedures are in place to mitigate our exposure to the major risks.

Objectives and Activities

a. Summary of objectives

The objectives of the charity as set out in its governing document are as follows:

  1. To promote and advance by such means as are according to the laws of England exclusively charitable the religion of Islam in accordance with the principles of the Shia laws and to provide for the relief of poverty; and

  2. To provide or assist in the provision of facilities for recreation or other leisure time occupation in the interests of social welfare with the object of improving the conditions of life for the inhabitants of the area of benefit without distinction of sex or of political, religious or other opinions.

b. Activities

The organisation has charitable status and provides religious, recreational, and social facilities, particularly, but not exclusively, for the Shia community and people with disabilities, in the interests of social welfare. Its aim is to improve the quality of life and well-being of these individuals. In addition, the organisation provides sports facilities and activities for the wider community, promoting health, inclusion, and community cohesion.

c. Public Benefit

In accordance with section 17 of the Charities Act 2011, the trustees confirm that they have had due regard to the Charity Commission's general guidance on public benefit in exercising their powers and duties, and in particular in reviewing the charity's aims and determining its activities for the year under review.

The trustees are satisfied that the activities undertaken during the year — comprising the provision of religious, recreational and social facilities, the provision of food to those in need, the delivery of Ramadan and Muharram programmes, and the relief of poverty — were carried out in furtherance of the charity's objects and provided demonstrable public benefit to the communities served, including the Shia community, persons with disabilities, and the wider inhabitants of the area of benefit, without distinction as to sex, political affiliation, religion or other belief.

d. Achievements and Performance

During the year, the charity continued to deliver against its charitable objects through its regular programme of religious, recreational and social activities, including the Ramadan and Muharram programmes and the ongoing provision of food to those in need. The charity also undertook capital improvements to its premises during the year, including the addition of a funeral room facility to serve the community.

e. Reserves Policy

At the year end, the charity held total funds of £348,070 of which £331,193 was represented by fixed assets (comprising freehold property, fixtures and fittings, computer equipment and the funeral room), leaving free reserves of approximately £16,877 held in cash and current assets.

The trustees consider this level of free reserves to be appropriate to meet the charity's short-term working capital requirements, while the substantial majority of the charity's assets remain committed to the premises from which its charitable activities are delivered.

Principal funding

Most of the funds are raised through voluntary donations from within the local community.

1. Accounting Policies

Basis of preparing the financial statements

The financial statements of the charity, which is a public benefit entity under FRS 102, have been prepared inaccordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) 'Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement ofRecommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the FinancialReporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2015)',Financial Reporting Standard 102 'The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland' and the Charities Act 2011. The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention.

Tax Status

Al-Zahra Foundation UK has a charitable status and hence exempt from Tax on its charitable activities

Fund Accounting

The charity has restricted and unrestricted funds. Restrcited funds are catagorised as Restricted based on the donor's restriction on the project for which they must be used. While unrestricted funds are available for the use at the discreation of the trustees in furtherance of the general objectives of the charity

Trustees Remuneration

None of the Trustees are paid wages, salaries or any benefit in kind.

Income Recognition

All income is recognised in the Statement of Financial Activities once the charity has received the funds and is entitlement to use the funds

Expense Recognition

An expense is recognised as expenditure as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity that expenditure is required to settle the amount of obligation. The charity follos a strict apporval procedure for all charitable expenditures and funds are disbursed after approval.
