## Livestock Report of the Trustees For the year ended 31 March 2024

The Trustees, who are also directors for the purposes of company law, have pleasure in presenting their report and the financial statements for the charitable company for the year ended 31 March 2024. The Trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and the Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2015)

## **OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES**

## **Objectives and aims**

Livestock is an arts and community development charity. We run projects that engage with the themes of mental health and wellbeing, focused on individuals ’ personal stories. We enable people to share their histories and experiences to connect and communicate with each other. Our peer support groups use creativity as a tool to empower. We work primarily with mothers and families.

The company aims to advance education for the public benefit by the promotion of the arts, especially performance, writing and art; and mental and physical wellbeing through mindfulness and food activities. We work especially with communities in the Brighton and Hove area.

The trustees have considered the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit, including the guidance ‘public benefit: running a charity (PB2) .

## **ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE**

## **Significant activities**

Mothers Uncovered founder Maggie won three awards: Big Issue Changemaker 2024, WISE Women 100, and Expert Citizens for Leadership.

We received a significant amount of coverage due to the financial struggles facing charities and impacting our activities, with articles/interviews on BBC S.East, ITV Meridian, The Big Issue. The i- news and Danish paper Nederlands Dagblad. Our profile was also raised by Maggie’s petition about increased work requirements for parents on Universal Credit, which would negatively impact single mothers in particular. This brought coverage of our work in several media outlets.

SoulFood closed this year after the lead worker wanted to move in a different direction from the charity’s objectives. This was seen as a timely move, as Livestock’s focus was shifting more into the maternal health areas of work.

## **Achievements**

## **Mothers Uncovered**

Last year we supported 15 mothers through our regular Mothers Uncovered courses and another 15 through the My Birth sessions, aimed at new mothers who have experienced birth trauma.

## **Younger Mothers**

Following the success of our intergenerational project in 2023, we began the process of starting a peer-led group for younger mothers, as participants told us ours was the first group they had felt comfortable in as younger parents.

Livestock Report of the Trustees For the year ended 31 March 2024 (continued)

## **Younger Mothers (continued)**

We conducted interviews for 5 participants from the original project and took on 2 new trainees. The start of project delivery was delayed to summer 2024 due to personal circumstances for the project lead.

## **Maternal Health Advocacy**

We continued the podcast, The Secret Life of Mothers, with the assistance of our trustee Christina to provide technical support. This showcases individual mothers’ stories who have faced additional challenges in their motherhood journey, such as bereavemen t or child’s poor mental health. We currently have 10 episodes on Spotify.

Maggie was interviewed for Lucy Jones’ book Matrescence, which brought greater prominence to our own matrescence advocacy (matrescence meaning transition to motherhood). We set up www.matrescence.uk as a site for resources, advocacy and writings – the only UK based site for this purpose. Maggie had a piece in Mumsnet on the importance of supporting mothers in matrescence.

It also led to the establishment of **Peer Support Training** – a low-cost, online support session led by Maggie for mothers around the UK wishing to set up their own groups.

## **Reaching Your Potential**

We received feedback from several participants wanting support for next stages, having taken time away from the workplace. We ran this group coaching programme to increase confidence, identify skills and flesh out ideas for new directions in careers for mothers who have taken time out to have children.

This pilot in January/February had seven participants. We paid for the venue out of our reserves and the trainer, work coach/author Gill Hasson, offered her services on a voluntary basis for this one group as she supported our work.

## **Frazzled**

A new project for parents of SEND (Special Education Needs/Disability) child/ren. We ran 6 online monthly sessions, led by two facilitators who are SEND parents. A growing community of parents found a vital support network where they could express thoughts that they couldn’t in any other setting.

Livestock Report of the Trustees (continued) For the year ended 31 March 2024

## **Teen Years**

We ran five Teen Years sessions between June-Nov at the Earth & Stars in Brighton with a more informal setting. Only one session had much take-up, so we have decided to test this in Worthing for the next group and see how this works.

## **SoulFood**

We decided to close SoulFood. The project’s lead worker was starting to focus more on sustainability of food and providing for food banks given the current world landscape, and although admirable, these are not the objectives of the charity.

Projects were closed well, and a celebration event held to mark the work of the project, with both sides feeling that this was the right time to part ways.

## **Livestock**

## Organisational wide

Over the past year as predicted, it became increasingly harder to gain funds from grants and trusts. With more funders focussed on food poverty, migrants, refugees and global majority funding streams competition for general funds became worse. Of over 50 bids that were applied for, Livestock was successful in only a fifth of these, the majority of these being less than £5000.

Consequently, both executives of Livestock worked unpaid for a quarter of the year to restabilise the core costs of the charity, and we were fortunate to receive funding in the last month of the year from The National Lottery Awards for All grant which sec ured Livestock’s minimal core costs for the following year.

Even though we started looking at the diversification of income streams, many of the initiatives we were able to facilitate with minimum staff didn’t achieve big income. However, with Maggie raising awareness with the public and the team coming together to throw a pub quiz fundraiser, we did manage to bring in approximately £1000. We shall look to sign up to Affinity Lottery next year and grow a steadier income stream through donations this way and look at other ways in which to gain income, including seeking corporate funding. This will again be the priority for 2024/25.

## **Governance**

This year Lorraine our volunteer treasurer, stepped onto the trustee board and Nigel, and Birgit stepped down. Both these exits were due to other personal commitments and length of service, and we were sad to see them go. However, both remain local and a ‘friend of Livestock’.

We are grateful to have Lorraine step into a trustee role, and this has provided more detail and robustness to the financial procedures, creating confidence amongst the board in an area highlighted as a need in the past years.

We led a Strategy training day in January 2024 for the trustees and this was useful to formally set out our first strategic vision document for this year, and create a risk register, further strengthen our procedures.

Livestock Report of the Trustees (continued) For the year ended 31 March 2024

All trustees had their annual meetings with the Managing Executive this year, and this process seems to be working well for individuals and to inform ongoing governance training days.

## **Policy and Procedure**

Policy and Procedure took a back seat this year given the crisis with funding and priorities all set to this goal. We endeavour to review all existing policies as a priority next year.

## **FINANCIAL REVIEW**

For the year ending 31 March 2024 the charity recorded a net surplus of £3,973 (2023: £5,273). Total reserves now stand at £25,381 of which £12,791 is restricted. Total income generated for the year was £52,557, (2023: £49,417). The charity has received £45,650 in grants during the year (2022: £42,876), including £19,974 from the National Lottery Community Fund and £8,751 from Trusthouse

Expenditure has also risen. A total of £48,584 was spent (2023: £44,144). The charity continues to invest in supporting the infrastructure of the charity and ensuring appropriate controls, governance and planning processes are in place.

This has allowed the charity to more clearly allocate support costs to projects, and closely manage activities in line with budgeted costs. Support costs for the year have increased to £20,931 (2023: £16,147). This includes additional administrative resource in the core function of the Charity.

## **Reserves**

Livestock is committed to using its resources in pursuit of its charitable objectives. It is also committed to maintaining a level of reserves that is prudent to meeting ongoing liabilities, sufficient to ensure that all delivery commitments can be met and to protect the long- term future of Livestock’s operations. Livestock’s reserves policy seeks to balance these priorities by aiming to hold a level of general reserves which equates to approximately one month’s expenditure of the charity, based on the plan ned expenditure for the year.

As at 31 March 2024 general reserves stood at £25,381 which is around 5 month’s expenditure at 202 3-24 levels.

## **STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT**

## **Governing document**

Livestock is a charitable company limited by guarantee; it was incorporated on 30 May 2007 and registered as a charity on 30 December 2007. Livestock was established under a Memorandum of Association, which describes the objects and power of the charitable company; it is governed under its Articles of Association. Under those Articles, the Trustees are elected at the Annual General Meeting. One third of the elected, and all of the co-opted, Trustees must retire at each subsequent Annual General Meeting.

The Members have guaranteed to contribute a maximum of £1 each in the event of the company being wound up. All members of the Trustee Board give their time voluntarily and received no benefits from the charity.

Any expenses reclaimed from the charity are set out in the notes to the accounts.

## **Risk management**

The trustees have a duty to identify and review the risks to which the charity is exposed and to ensure appropriate controls are in place to provide reasonable assurance against fraud and error.
