Structure, Governance and Management:
KARIBU was set up in March of 2005 and became a registered charity by constitution in December 2007. Our earlier trustees were appointed by their peers and the new ones on merit and in the recognition of their passion and contributions to the development and achievement of the Charity.
The day to day running of the charity’s projects and delivery of activities is done by the team of our Manager, the Administrative Officer, Community Engagement Officer, Sessional Workers with the support of a host of Volunteers and very committed Board of Trustees of the Charity.
Objectives and Activities
Summary of the objects of KARIBU African Women’s Support Group as set out in our governing document:
“Promoting family values and taking pride in our heritage”
- Object 1: To relieve any charitable need of African women and children in the UK in particular but not exclusively:
The relief of financial need and sickness:
The advancement of education:
The promotion of racial and religious harmony.
Some of the activities we carry out in relation to these objects:
In pursuit of our objects:
-
We continue to inform and advice our members and service users on the information we gather through networking, from statutory organisations and other sources.
-
We offer Peer Support to each other and reach out to those who are referred to us or we are called upon to help and those who come to us seeking help or advice.
-
We run a Saturday term time supplementary school with lessons in English, Mathematics, basic Science, art and craft and culturally based activities like dancing, cooking, drumming & storytelling. We also run workshops and activities for our adult population and collaborate with
-
With the cooperation of our members and volunteers we organise activities and attend events to commemorate and celebrate historical and current events. Such as African History Month, International Women’s Day; hold stalls for information and promotion of the charity etc.
-
We network with other organisations by participating in several meetings and events during the year, to ensure that all our members are kept informed of events and activities in and around Suffolk.
Achievements and Performance
Summary of the main achievements and disappointments of the charity during 2023 / 2024:
-
We have continued to maintain a very strong presence within Ipswich and have remained as a reference point for the local African and ethnic minority communities. We ran health and well-being activities which benefit very diverse set of participants, such as Mindfulness, Food and Mood, Dance and Exercise.
-
Hosted amazing and well attended events to celebrate International Women’s Day, Africa’s Day, joined in celebration of Various Communities’ Days’ events. And organised different events to
“Promoting family values and taking pride in our heritage”
celebrate African History Month, such as Jollof rice extravaganza, Gospel night and Culture and Heritage Day.
-
Our Saturday Supplementary School continues to be popular and appreciated by parents as a community service. With the help, support and encouragement of dedicated educators, we continue to see tangible improvement in the attending children; with huge improvement in their confidence and social skills particularly as most of the children come from homes where they have English as their second language. We ran workshops in Swahili language and African cooking, and baking over the summer and took part in the annual Global Rhythm. It is always a joy to see our wards bonding and forming great friendships. We were very pleased to see many of our old former students came to visit this year. And we are also very proud to mention that four of our 16 years old did excellently well in the GCSEs with highly impressive grades and two more of our former supplementary school pupils joined the Hall of Fame by graduating with degrees from the University. Congratulations to Hameed and Morike!
-
Karibu continues to provide members of the female African population and other ethnic minority communities with effective help and peers’ support, meet and connect with one another to share in each other’s experiences and encourage each other to make personal individual progress and development.
-
Karibu is happy to add to its board two very conscientious ladies. One of which we are proud to say is a former student of Karibu Supplementary School!
-
Karibu is equally happy that as a testament of our hard work, inclusiveness, professionalism and empathy and what’s more a general acceptance we now have many adult males accessing our activities
-
We continue to help and support all different groups emerging within the African communities. We work in collaboration with other organisations such as Community Action Suffolk, Refugee Support, African Cultural Forum, Suffolk Black Forum, Inside Out Communities, Arts O’lam, Ladies of Vision and Lighthouse. Karibu remains a very important part of Ipswich Community and is often the first point of call for enquiries from outside the County and by the Social Services when there is an African person in need of peer support. Karibu remains the CHAMPION of the Africans and other Minority Ethnic communities and children in Ipswich. The highlight of our year has always been the annual Gospel Night, and this year’s was no exception with our special guest - His Worshipful the Mayor of Ipswich in attendance with scores of other people worshiping in His Praise.
“Promoting family values and taking pride in our heritage”
- Another highlight of our year is in the boost of three years of grant secured from the National Lottery Community Funding of £127,509.00! Which has given us the stability of core funding we greatly need for the next foreseeable future.
Disappointment:
-
It is still with great disappointment that we have not gotten and own an exclusive premises for office, exhibition and activities base.
-
We were also very disappointed by the government’s decision that led to the discontinuation of our Refugees Integration Project.
Financial Information
- We are most grateful to all our funders especially, National Lottery Community Fund, Suffolk Community Foundation’s, Suffolk County Council, Peoples Health Lottery who have all funded us during this period and without whose support we couldn’t have done much. The Charity raised a total of £57,958.16 during the financial year and a total expenditure of £35,665.81 during the same period
Appreciation
-
We are very grateful to our Landlords - Burlington Baptist Church for their understanding, help and support in making it a lot easier for us by offering amazing discounts on the use of the halls and our office space. We are very grateful to all our volunteers, sessional and regular staff and board of trustees who all make a fantastic team. We also thank our colleagues from other organisations and all our service users especially the ladies and gentlemen who attend our health and well-being activities on Mondays and Thursdays. Special appreciation goes to our chairperson, Ms Belinda Maskell, Treasurer Miss Ausiku, & Trustee, Miss Mamabolo who continue to do so much for us despite their own personal workloads.
-
Thank you everyone we couldn’t have done it without you all!!
Other information:
It is our hope that KARIBU will continue to perform its unique role amongst its members, other ethnic minorities, service users and the British public at large.
