All secondary education in Uganda is fee paying. The school was re- opened by GC in 2007 to provide education for children who would not othe￿ise have the OPFQrtunty to attend school - those orphaned andlor come from very families. The school currently accommodate up to 400 children. Fees are paKI ￿0NdIng to circumstances {many children pay no fees at all} and are in most cases lower than in state schools. Llvestock Project GC funds the purchase of shewgoatslchickens for very poor families in the Soroti district. to help them become sew-sufficient. Some families are now Seff-suffic￿nt. enough to sell livestock to purchase a cow or just more gO*￿ChICkenS/pIgeons and medicine for their special needs chik1ren. These families s￿0 pass on INestock once their own have Produ￿ offspring so the cyde of supporting one another continues. Families train each other to care for the live$t￿k viithin their own village. We visit faMil￿S who are recipienls of livestock and meet with the few volunteeF5 who support and identify the speci81 needs families in the suffoundirvJ villages and districts. 5. Section D Achievements and performance COVID-19 The work of Global Challenge (GC) vrns affected due to the global impact ofthe Covid-19 pandemic. Our income and expenditure was largety in line with expectations. however, the operations of the charity were affected in a range of ways. including.. no trustee visit due to travel restrictions Crossroads School was closed for most ofthe year due to government reStric￿n$ Addl￿nal expenditure vras used for PPE and other expenditure due to the pandemic. in line with our objectwe lo alleviate wvety and suffering. and to ensure the Schc￿l could reopen vi a limited capacity. Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year Crossroads School During the reporting year Crossroads has been closed for the majority of thts pericxj. due to the Covid-19 pandemic. GC has continued to fund teacher salaries throughout the year, which was of great relief to the staff. The school provided some continued to SUPF4)rt to those pupils they Could reach during the pandemic and reopened in the aulumn for pupils in thlyr final year of study. GC was able to fund PPE equipment and other resources such as them)ometers to ensure the school met govemment requirements for the safe reopening of s¢hwls. Once the school pened. GC continued to fund lunches for pupils. Communtcation Continues to be a challenge, which is being addressed by requesting regular updates from our ¢(￿0rdInatOr based in Soroti. In addition, the truslees had fw2st a dekit budget during thi% reF￿Ing year for Crossroads Schwl support from GC. Due to the donations of supporters and some reduced expendilure. reductions in support for salaries were avoKled. However. the plans for r#)s$ible reductions in financial support have been generated and shared wilh stakeholders in Soroti. which be needed if future deficits in the budget are hjentified. New School The ¢lwrity has been sieadity working towards the development of a new school to $upwrt th8 charity's aim to advance education. The first stage has been to Klenbfy and purchase suitable land for the building of a school. Folltr•ving on from the identif￿tiOn of land during the 201 ￿20 porting year. GC is pleased to report that the land was purchased in December 2020. This was purchased from althated funds that had been raised. particulaty from bcal schools in the UK lor the development of this projecl. The next phase is for a working party to continue to develop plans for the site and to explore fijnding oplions for the development of the school. This has been delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. but it is hoped will prc*3ress during the next financial year. Special Noeds project This year 14 chli dren have r￿[￿ed operalions to provide greater mobility and to clear any bone infections. Surgery is completed at local hospilals in and around Soroli wtth our special needs coordinator (a medical Offi￿r} ensuring the most competitNe prices are secured. Section D Achievements and performance This year we have PLbrchased a further 4 new wheelchairs to enable pupils to be able to get to school. Our Special needs playground has not been open for much ofthe year due to the pandemic but will remain a$ a place for physio therapy support and advice as W811 as a venue to medical clinics On￿ the restrictions are lifted in Soroti. One of our long tem chIld￿n who requires ongoing nutritional support. physiotherapy, further tests and assessments also broke his left femurthis year when being lffted out of his bed at home. He has needed further medical attention including blood tests. treatment for leukaemia and anaemia. He required private hospitalisation to avoid the covid wards and hospitals and so we were able to support his mum ffinancialty with these additional expenses. 4 of the 11 children at Ngora school have been attending since the retum to school but others remain at home during the pandemic and have not felt tt safe to retum as yet. but we continue to finartce the board and education for those willing to attend. PPE and masks as well as santtizers and hand wash have been purchased for our volunleers and special needs coordinator during these challenging times too, lo help with on gong home and hospital visits (when tt has been safe to do so}. We ￿ntinUe to maintain the motorbike for our speual need$ coordinator so that he can vtsit the remote villages to assess recovery after medical treatment. to visit new children and families identified by the volunteers in the 4 districts. Livestock Project One young person has recerved the cow that she has requested in order to be able to help support hersew, her on going medical needs and vthen possible her famity. 32 other families have been identified who would benefft from go*slchickens but it has been difficuli to provide these and deliver them to the different districts at this lime. Publiclty and fundraising Social media is the main source of publicty and for advertising our fundraising events. Monthty updates on QRBC YouTube broadcasts are helping to share our events further afietd. Local schools in Broadstairs and Thanet receive updates and newsletters together with our regular supporters who have signed up to our mailing list.
