Biddulph
Chairwoman’s Report 2021-2022
At the AGM in August 2022 Frederick Reed resigned as Chair of Biddulph u3a and I was accepted as the new Chair. I would like to thank Fred for his assistance in making the change as smooth as possible.
Diane Kemp moved from Assistant Secretary to Secretary after the resignation of Mavis Hancock who is now taking a well-earned rest from the secretarial role but has always been available for help and guidance when needed.
I would like to thank all the leaders for their efforts in keeping the groups going through these difficult times and for their support during my first year in office.
Membership is still around 480 as it was last year and it seems that despite the production and distribution of updated leaflets, bookmarks, and the introduction of the Facebook page the covid effect is still in evidence and we are struggling to get to the pre pandemic level of around 600.
The Facebook page is open for anybody to make posts to, if leaders or individual members want to publicise their group with an article and/or photos they are welcome to do so and if you think you will struggle to upload onto Facebook then site admin, Steve Powney, will be happy to assist.
Once again, we have seen that our groups are using their talent and skills to raise funds for worthwhile causes such as the Friday Card Making Group raising funds for Ward 202 and now for Lymphoma Action Charity, the Singing For Pleasure Group with concerts in aid of the British Heart Foundation and the Victoria Centre Defibrillator Appeal and the Acoustic Guitar Group fundraising for the Green Tea House and lending their support to the “Million Dollar Bash” in aid of the Trussell Trust. Well done to you all and everyone else doing their bit for others.
Our reserves, which we normally try to keep to a minimum of 9 months fixed costs, are in a healthy position thanks to the bequest from Trisha and which should be used to benefit Biddulph u3a as a whole. We received a small grant of £300 from SMDC which we are using

help finance a test switch to LED lighting which if successful we can roll out throughout Lund House.
Replacing committee members is still a problem with roles of Vice Chair and Social Secretary still vacant and both the Treasurer and Finance Officer already serving beyond their planned resignation dates with no candidates offering take up their positions to date. On the positive side the Assistant Secretary position has been filled Maureen Newby who will be assisting the Secretary but not becoming a trustee of the charity.
We do need members to come forward to take up vacant committee roles and to take over from those who have completed their term, you can only say “I’ll stay on another year” for so long, but we also needs your help on an ongoing basis, you may not want to become a fulltime member of the committee but possess skills, or have ideas that would be helpful or just be prepared to attend local events as a representative of Biddulph u3a please make yourself known to the committee so that we can call on you when needed.
The committee is a small group dedicated to keeping our u3a branch going but I fear that Biddulph u3a will not survive without additional support from the membership.
My thanks and gratitude go to all the current committee members for their commitment and assistance and hope that, with the support of the leaders and members, we can see Biddulph u3a flourish over the coming year and for many more years to come.
