Chairman’s Report 2019-2020

We are living through unprecedented times and our thoughts go out to all those for whom this pandemic has been life changing.

The newly formed committee had no experience of The Third Age Trust, The Charity Commission, or the workings of the u3a, it was a very steep learning curve. Which meant relying very heavily on the experience of The Secretary Mavis Hancock.

Christmas and New Year breaks preceded Covid19 and lockdown and, from March 2020, no sessions meant no income, but the bills had to be paid. I must at this time give a thank you to the Rhodes family for their generosity in giving us rent breaks and reductions, without their support we would have struggled.

Times have been difficult for Biddulph u3a, and it has been a struggle to keep any interest going when there were no sessional activities. Thank you to all the groups who managed some activity using various social media platforms.

We managed to keep the Biddulph Banter going but whilst there were signs that it was appreciated, there was very little input forthcoming from the membership, apart from a few stalwarts.

We managed to achieve donations from several sources thanks to the hard work of Steve Powney, and the cajoling of councillors and others by Mavis Hancock which helped the bank balance.

Because of the constraints of Covid19 and lockdown, we were unable to hold a physical AGM for 2019/2020 and, as a virtual meeting would not achieve a quorum, it was decided that the financial statement and reports would be presented at the AGM for the year 2020/2021 which would be held as soon restrictions allowed.

Looking forward to 2020/2021, our Subscription cycle disappointedly saw a 50% drop in our membership, at a time when there was a requirement for a membership increase and an increase of our sessional income to pay for Lund House. Thank you to all those who paid their subscription and who made donations despite this lack of sessional activity.
