ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE
Fighting for a fur free world
Respect for Animals campaigns against the cruel and unnecessary international fur trade, believing fur farming and trapping to be morally indefensible.
By using innovative advertising and media campaigns such as the famous David Bailey 'Dumb Animals' poster and cinema commercial, consumer attitudes towards the wearing of fur in the UK have changed dramatically. Many department stores used to have fur salons and fur could be found commonly on high streets. Now, more and more department and high street stores have adopted 'fur-free' policies and have the Fur Free Retailer programme, run in the UK by the Respect for Animals Educational Trust (the Trust).
Effective campaigns run by the Trust have led to fur farming being banned throughout the United Kingdom for over 20 years now. The leg-hold trap, the device most commonly used to catch animals in the wild, is deemed so cruel that its use has been banned in this country for over 50 years and in the EU for over 20 years. The trade in cat and dog fur is now illegal in the EU and UK, as is the trade in the products of cruel seal hunts.
What we stand for
The killing of tens of millions of animals each year for nothing more than the fur on their backs is morally wrong and a crime against nature. Gandhi said 'The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.' Animals killed for their fur are either trapped in the wild or reared in fur factory farms in tiny, barren wire cages.
All this for a product nobody needs. The Trust gives a voice to the countless and voiceless animals whose only crime is to have been born with beautiful fur. We campaign peacefully but effectively and have a good record of achievement, securing a ban on fur factory farming throughout the UK and we have been at the forefront of the consumer and educational campaigns in the UK that have led to the closure of most fur outlets here. But there is so much more to do.
Our work
Fur Free Europe
Despite being based outside of the EU, the Trust was one of the driving forces behind the Fur Free Europe European Citizens' Initiative (ECI), which was to become the most successful animal welfare ECI ever.
It was a legal opinion, commissioned in 2021 by the Trust which convinced the European Commission that a fur farming ban was legally possible, and persuaded key players in the European animal welfare movement to invest resources in the campaign. 1,502,319 validated signatures were officially submitted to the European Commission calling on the EU to ban fur farming and the placement of farmed fur products on the market once and for all. Fur Free Europe was launched in May 2022 and received the support of more than eighty organisations from all around Europe.
Fur Free UK
The work of the Trust to see a fur imports and sales ban across the UK continues, despite the current Government abandoning the Animals Abroad Bill and the anti-fur trade measures it was to contain.
The Trust has provided background and briefing material for key political decision makers across the political spectrum, as well as submitting evidence to the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs whilst urging it to publish the results of its consultation into the fur trade in the UK, which is now years overdue. The Trust has attended multiple parliamentary events in Westminster this year.
International coalitions
Building alliances around the world in order to pursue effective campaigns is a key part of the ethos of the Trust. We have continued to be members of the Executive Committee for the Fur Free Alliance (FFA), a coalition of more than 50 organisations around the world and are key contributors to FFA working groups and committees. We have also been a part of the Executive of the Fur Free Europe ECI, as a representative of the Fur Free Alliance. The Trust is also a highly valued member of Eurogroup for Animals, the leading coalition body for animal welfare in the European Union.
As members of EAa's Fur Working Group, we play a key role contributing to key EU-level activities as part of the ECI campaign, the Commission's revision of animal welfare legislation and their proposals for new fur labelling regulations.

World Leaders For Research And Reports
The Trust has also published a key piece of research: the revised edition of The Case Against Fur Factory Farming: a scientific review which includes the latest scientific evidence regarding the welfare of animals farmed for fur in Europe, and critically evaluates the fur industry's 'WelFur' protocols for on-farm assessment.
The report documents the extent of animal welfare failings inherent on fur farms and highlights that the current regulatory framework for the protection of fur animal welfare in the European Union is inadequate. It also finds that WelFur is not able to address the major welfare issues for mink, foxes and raccoon dogs farmed for fur, and establishes that enrichment of existing housing systems is unable to address the welfare problems in the cage systems used by the fur industry, concluding that a ban is the only viable solution.
The first edition of the report was translated into multiple languages and formed the scientific basis for convincing numerous countries to ban fur farming, including the Republic of Ireland, the Czech Republic and Norway. The Trust is proud to publish this second edition report in conjunction with Eurogroup for Animals. It is also set to be translated into Hungarian.
Fur Free Retailer
Fur Free Retailer program is an initiative of the Fur Free Alliance, organised by Respect for Animals in the UK. This forms a significant part of our corporate outreach, as we work with designers, brands and online retailers to provide them with facts and evidence regarding fur production. In the UK, most high street shops now have such policies. Fur Free Retailer is the world's leading program to connect fur-free companies to consumers seeking ethical goods. The online Fur Free Retailer list provides consumers accurate information about a retailer's fur policy, allowing them to make an informed choice when shopping. The program specifically aims to encourage companies to go fur-free and further the spirit of ethical consumerism.
Some of the most famous FFRs include Gucci, Prada and Armani, as well as high street favourites like H&M, Next, New Look and River Island.
Fur Free Retailer recognizes the international ISO 26000 guidelines of corporate social responsibility.
Fur farming banned in Ireland
The Trust celebrated when the bill to ban fur farming in the Republic of Ireland passed the final stages of the parliamentary process on the evening of Tuesday 29 March 2022 and was then signed into law by the Irish President. This followed years of work on our part, with our opinion polling data and scientific reports proving crucial to finally winning a fur farming ban in Ireland.
Campaigning in China
In October 2022, the Trust took part in ACTAsia's Compassion In Fashion Forum, which, for the first time, was a part of Shenzhen Fashion Week in China.
The event was organised by our close colleagues ACTAsia, a group that campaigns against fur in China. Remotely, we presented our findings about the environmental impact of the fur industry, in front of attendees in Shenzhen and thousands of others dialling in from elsewhere in China.
