Overview
The year 2023124 marks six years since the opening of Delapré Abbey co the public. This year. we welcomed
over 400.000 people to the Abbey and its surrounding grounds. During this period, the Trust expanded its reach
and grew its impatt through it5 charitable acciviue>
Despite the challenwng environment caused by a cost of living and &ving crisi& compounded by inflationary and
utility cost pressures, the Trusr continued to deliver on ics obj.ectives. It further developed its audienc< improved
the diversity of its users. and continued to preserve and promote the herirage of the site. AddÉ(ionally. the Trust
grew its organisation through Incr￿Sed trading attivities.
The Trust continues to invesc in efforts to unlock the full ptxentiaj of the Delapré Abbey site through the A
Stsble Future Projett This projecc will enable the Trust to widen its reach and increase its impacL while
welcoming new communities to enDge with the sitr and its programmes of enp8ement and wellbeing.
The Trustees wish to thank the sraff and volunteer team for their efforts in delivering the Trust's engagement
and events programme, growing the organisation, and developing plans for a sustainable future. The Trustees
also extend their aPP￿la￿On to all funders and stakeholders who have supported the Trust's work this year
and beyond.
Achievements and Performance
Community Engagement
We continue co engage with our hyper-local communities. During this period we enzaged with over 4.000
individuals as part of the A Stable Future projecL During the Development phase, the Charity undertook
extensive consulooon activities involving staff. Volunteers. and various local srakeholder5. These activities were
designed to complement eaT4ier consultations from Spring and Summer 2023 and were integral to the
development of our redevelopmenc plans. Key engagement efforts included:
Workshops and discussions with community groups. such as the West Northamptonshire Youth Forum.
Information stalls and feedback sessions ac both on-site and community events {e.g., over the Easter weekend).
One-to-one consuluvon calls with key partners and stskeholders.
Online workshops and surveys targeced at the general public. volunteers and Staff.
Pilot acuvities, including the Wellbeing Fesuval.
Stakeholder consultations with vari¢)us groups. includin

The findings from these consultations have SI￿lficant1Y influenced the redevelopment plans, particularly the
accompanying activity programmes. These insights were instrumenfal in shaping the bid submitted in May 2024.
Evidence from progres5 repons, evaluation interviews. and reviews of accFvity plxns shows that key consulration
outcome5 were incorporated into the ffinal bid.
Additionally, these insights helped refine the evaluation and impacc frarnework for the Delivery phase starting in
November 2024. The evaluation will focus on:
Addressing barriers to access and participati¢Jn, including improveM￿ts to parkin& overcoming language
barriers. and enhancing communiry cohesion.
Ensuring economic fattor& such as event costs, do not prevent participauon.
Providing a diverse range of ac(ivities that support wellbeing without alienating certain groups. parricularly men.

Through our engagement programme across the Charity. we have increased the number of households benefiting
from the communiry annual pass by 228. This enables those in our hyper-local community to access the house
for free and engage with event5 at no or reduced cosc Addityonatly. we supported free access to large events by
engaging with our ward councillor& who distributed over 230 free tickets Yalued at more than £4.000.
The Trusr hosted a series of diverse puE4ic event& combining hiscorical instgh¢ cuknral celebrations. and family-
friendly actyv1t1￿.
Museum of the Moon (May 26-28. 2023): The iconic lunar insrallation by Luke Jerram vtss displayed in the
Abbeys garden5. The event featured lunar-themed ptrf0rn1anc￿ a silent disco. and moon-gazinz.
Easter Eggstravaganza (March 29 - April 1, 2024): This Easter eV￿t offered families an egg hunt in the
Walled Garden. an animal petting ar4 and a fun trxil within the Abbey.
Battle of Northampton Memorial Day Uuty 14. 2023): This historical day featured guided battiefield tours
by the Northamptonshire Battlefield Society. reenamncs. and a falconry display.
Summertime Live (August 9-10. 2023): A major summer fescival with INe musiG DJ& food stalls, and
attivities for all ages.
Winter Light Trail (November - December 2023): Rewrning during the festive season. the Winter Light
Trdil rransformed the Abbey's grounds with stunning light display&
Classics on the Lawn (September 2023): Car enthusiasts enjoyed an array of vintage cars showcased on
the Abbey's South Lawn. celebrdting both classic cars and the Abbey's heritsge.
Heritage Open Days (September 2023): As part ol the national Herioge Open Days. the Delapré Abbey
Pre5ervatiort Trust opened the house and gardens to the public free of charg< offering tours that highlighted
the building's history.
Historical House Tours and Talks: Thro￿Out the year. the Trust Owdnised regular tours, guiding wsitors
through the Abbey's history. from ￿$ origins as a nunnery to its development by the Bouverie family. Speci31
tslks provided further insighrs into its architecDJre and cultural importance.
Volunteers
The Charity welcomed new volunteers during this period. with an increased number being referred through
community, professional, and self-referrdls as parr of our wellbeing programme. We celebratyj 17 voluntsers
who completed five years of seNce with the Chaiity. and we expett this number to increase in the coming
years. Throughout the year, our onboarding and trnining pro8ramme was redesigned, successfully helping
volunteers feel part of the Trust in a retatively shorc time. We continued to see the benefits of adyerrlslng
volunteer opportunities through the Volunteer Passport programme administered by General Prac(ice
Alliance.
Our corporate volunteering programme grew this past year. with 12 corporate volunteering engagements
involving 117 partiopants. These activities supported the A Stable Future proieffj eyent marshallin& and
iandscape m&ntenance across the Chariry.

Charltable Acttvities
This year marks the sixth year since Delapré Abbey opened to the public. We have seen an increase in visitor
numbers, continuing to build back post-pandemic, with 7,543 people visiting the house to learn abour its history.
This year. the Charity sttged The Walled Garden vns Map'cal": your memories of Delapré Abbey's zardens,
which supported further audience research and devdopment as we prepare to develop the Walled and Eastern
Gardens project as part of our I S-year masterplan.
The wellbeing programme at Delapré Abbey this year has been diverse and enNn& supporting various
comrnuniry groups. Below is a summary:
. En-fold Support for Young People and Parents: Multiple sessions were held betyieen May and August
2023, primarily for young people and their parentlcarers. At￿ndance ranged from 7-1 O young people per session
with 3-5 parentslcarers.
. Aphasia Café: Regular sesslons throughouc the year offered supporc for individuals with aphasi& Attendance
ranged from 7 co 19 people per session, and each café ran for 2 hours.
Menopause Café: These café5 provided support for individuals naNigaung menopause. Parricipation varied
from 4 to 13 people. with each session lasting 1.5 to 2 hour5.
Therapeutic Gardenin8: A5 part of the wellbeing pro8ramm& developed this initiative, continuinz to
cultivate growing spaces and utilise the 8reenhou5es. This programme not only increased volunteer parricipation
but also 5UPPOrted the local food bank Food Aid Far Cotton. through produce donations.
Grief Gatherings: These sessions pro￿ded support for individuals coping with grief. While some sessions
had low attendance, there were regular meetings. each guided by a professional.
The Mind Body Soul Festival in Sepcember saw significant engagement with over 450 people pre-booked.
including discounts for social prescribers and free enrries. Workshops such as Bookbinding, Botanicals, and
Gingerbread Making were well-received. with some sessions selling ouc in as few as seven days. Feedback
highlighted the high quality of these event> participants askinz for more.
Nawre-based attivities like the Bat Walk and Moth Tall led by P￿ Gilber¢ attratted modest but engaged
attendance (around 12 participants per session).
Significant community events were organised, including Nigerian Independence Day, the Christma5 Light Switch
On, and the Spring Equinox Silent Disco. These events Saw strong attendance {120 for Nigerian Independence
Day and SO attendees at the disco).
The Winter Solstice gathering in December had 19 atcendees. and the Spring Equinox Silent Disco in March
engaged 50 people. with free tickets distributed through various community organisations. For International
Women's Day. 33 participants were involved. refiecting strong communiry intereSL
Our ongoing programme of walking and talking session& known as "Space to Talk" attracted 375 pirricipants
over weekly sessions in 2023.

Events such as Lunar Lantern Making in February at(raC￿ families with 42 people attendin& and children
engaging in creating Chinese New Year lantrrn& The NHS Mafrrnal Mental Health Waik and NASP Away Day
were held in April 2024, contrbbuDng to the focus on wellbeing and mental health.
At the end of the year, we had the hc￿our of hos¢ing the first Wellbeing & Herioge Conference in partnership
with Historic England and the Council for British Archaeology. This large-S￿e conferenc¢ held over tsvo days
in March 2024. focused on wellbeing and heritsg< attracting around l 00 attend￿ per day and up to 400 live
stream viewers. The event provided an ￿c￿lent opportunicy to share examples of bes¢ pracvce and learning.
Through funding from West Northamptonshire CO￿(11. we prnMded a Cyclin8 with Confidence programme
across West Northamptonshir& supporring indNiduals to pn confidence and access bikes at a lower or no
tost. This programme was very popular. supporting over 200 individu￿S throughout the year. Add￿lonalIY. with
our pamer. Delapré Bike Dr, we have continued to develop this programme. working with primary schools
through the generestty of local community fundin&
The wdlbeing programme at Ddapré Abbey over the last year has provided an inclusive and supportyve
environment for a variety of communiry Membe￿ including young peopl& those dealing with menopaus¢ grief.
and aphasia. The diverse range of event& from mental health W￿kS and gardening for asylum seekers to creative
workshops and festivals. ensures that Delapré remains a vibAnt hub of communicy acri￿￿.
We continue t¢ make progress ¢ovrdrds Museum Accreditation. Ami Pendergrdss lef¢ in May 2023, having
completed a sN-month conrdcr as Collection5 and Documentation Officer. During her trnure. key documents
suth as a CollKtions Policy. Catalogu& Loan AgreemenE and Object Entry Forn) were drafted. These were
Immediats￿ utilised. ensuring we now have appropriate paperwork f¢x ￿1 new objects entering the collection.
We have also begun to catalogue historical donations and pwchase& leavinz us in a stron8er position for the
accrediration process.
Fundraising Activities
As the charity receives no regular lundin& staff. volunteer& and trustees worked hard to generate income
through our trading activities to enable the charity to deliver its charitable objectives. This year. our social
enterprise attiwties generatrd £596.196 of incom& an improvement on our perforniance from the previou5
year. Additionally, the charity rdised £99.250 through ger￿￿[ fundrnisin& enabling greater reach and impatt
through our chwitable activities.
The charity experienced increased revenue through our event programme and tenancies. providing a more
sustainable and resilient form of incom& This is particularly important during pwiods of growing pressures on
the public's discretionary spending.
Furthermor< the charity benefrted from a managemert charze of £173,026 from Delapré Abbey Enterpri
Limited, and a ucilities recharge of £37.71 S during the tsvelve-month period. Additionally. a profit of £3.994 was
dcnated at the end of the fiscal year.
The chariry also continued to make progress in funding the A Stable Future pro1￿ rÈceiwng support from the
Nacional Lottery Heritage Fund through a grant of £477.025. We anucipate submitting our delivery Stage
applicat¢on to the National Lottery Heritage Fund in May 2024. with an expecred decision by Autumn 2024. In
the year, we raised £1.278.S44 as part of our ambition to rnise 40% of the projett ct)sts to support an application
to the Herita8e Fund for 60% of the projett costs.
Reserves Policy
The Trust regularly reviews its reserves policy as part of its development towards financial sustainabilty. An
appropriate cash buffer, Curr￿[lY Set at £200,000. is rnaintained. This buffer is monitored by the Finance Sub-
Commttcee in light of the Trurf5 financial posioon.

At the balance sheet dat< the charity held bank balanw of £206,81 S. Based on monthly revenue forecasts for
the year ahead. the charity bdieves it hold5 sufficient funds co ￿SUre its solvency beyond the end of the financial
year, which concludes in March 2025. This supports the adopoon of the going concern basis of accounting.
With the continued progres5 of the stratwc plan and its associated priorities, the Trust has seen the positÉve
effects of new fundraising initiative5. combined with measures to increase income and manage costs. These
efforts ensure a sustainable cash flow position in the short and medium term. Long-term sustsinability will be a
focal point of the Maxerplan, with a key milestone being the Sttbles capit21 project delivery sttge applicarion to
the National Lot(ery Heritage Fund. submitted in May 2024.

by guarantee, as defined by the Companies Act 2006.
Recruitment and appointment of trurtees
Trustees, who are also known as Executive Committee Mernber& are elected for a term of three years and then
offered up for rtrelection at the AGM. Truscees are appointed a5 a part of recruitment and selection process
and go through a cornprehensive inductson process. Ihffiere necessary, trustee policies and documents such as
conflicc of interest waivers are re<irculated for review and signature annually in accordance with the charity's
governin8 documents.

The trustees (who are also the directors of Delapre Abbey Preser¥ation Trust for the purposes of company

Company law requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year. Under company law
the trustees must not approve the financi￿ statements unless they are satisfied that they give a true and fair view

2 Accounting policies
Summary of significant accounting policie$ and key accounting estimates
The principal accounting policies applied in the preparation of these financial sratements are set out below. These
policies have been consistendy applied to all the years presented, unless othwwise stated.
Statement of compliance
The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with Accounting and Reporting by Charitles:
Statement of Recommended Practice (applicable co chariues preparing their accounts in accordance with the
Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102)) (issued in Ortober 2019) -
(Charities SORP (FRS 102)). the Pinanciai Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS
102) and the Companies Act 2006.
Basis of preparation
Delapre Abbey Preservation Trust meets the definition ol a public benefit entity under FRS 101 Assets and
liabiliues are initialty recognised at historical cosc or trnnsaction value unle55 otherwise stated in the relevant
accounting policy notes.
Basis of consolidation
The consolidated financial statements consolidate the finanoal Statern￿ts of the charity and its subsidiary
undertakings drawn up to 30 March 2024.

A subsidiary is an entity controlled by the chariry. Contml is achieved where the charity has the power to govern
the financial ind operating policies of an entiry so as to obtain benefits from irs acuvities.
The results of subsidiaries acquired or disposed of during the year are included in the statement of financial
activities from the effettive date of acquisition or up to the effective date of disposal. a5 appropriate. Where
necessary, adjustments are made to the financial statements of subsidiaries to bring their accounting policies into
line with those used by the group.
The purchase method of accounting is used to account for business combinations that result in the acquisition
of subsidiaries by the ￿0uP. The cost of a busines5 combination is measured as the fair value of the assets given,
equrty inscrumenfs issued and liabilities incurred or assumed at the date of exchange, plus costs directly
attributable to the busines5 combination. Identifiable assets acquired and liabiliues and contingent liabilities
assumed in a business combination are measured initially at their fair Values at the acquisition date. Any excess
of the cost of the business combination over the acquirer's interest in the net lair Wdlue of the identyfiable assets,
liabilities and contingent liabilities recognised is recorded as goodwill.
Inter-company tran5acrions. balances and unrealised Dins on transaccions between the charity and its
subsidiaries, which are related parties, are eliminated in full.
Intra-group losses are a150 eliminated but may indicats an Impalm￿n£ that requires recognivon in the
consolidated financial sta￿Ments.
Accounting policies of Subsidiaries have been changed where necessary to ensure consistency with the policies
adopted by the group. Non<ontrolling interests in the net assets of consolidaced subsidiaries are identified
separately from Che group's equity therein. Non-confrolling interests consist of the amount of those interests at
the date of the oriwnal business combination and the non-controlling shareholder's Share of changes in equity
since the date of the combination. Total Comprehensive income is attributed to non-controlling interests even
if this results in the non<ontrolling interests having a deficit balance.
Golng concern
The trustees consider that there are no material uncertainties abouc the group's ability to continue as a going
Concern nor any significant areas of uncertainry that affett the orrying value of assets held by the group.
Income and endowments
All income is recognised orKe the charity has entitlemenc to the income. it is probable that the income will be
received and the amount of the income receivable can be measured reliably.
Donotlons ond lezacles
Donations are recognised vthen the charity has been notified in wriung of both the amount and settlement date.
In the event that a donation is subject to conditions that require a level of performance by the charity before
the charity is entitled to the funds. the income is deferred and not recognised until either those condiuons are
fully meL or the fulfilment of those conditions is wholly within the control of the charity and it is probable that
these conditions will be fulfilled in the reporting period.

Taxation
The charity Is considered to pass the trsts set out in Para8raph I Schedule 6 of the Finance Att 2010 and
therefore it meets the definiuon of a charitable company for UK corporaoon tax purposes. Accordingly. the
charity is potenoally exempt from taxation in respett of income or capical gains received within categories
covered by Chapter 3 Part I l of the Corpordrion Tax Acc 201 O or Secoon 256 of the Taxation of Chargeable

A defined contribution plan is a pension plan under which fixed contributions are paid into a pension fund and
the company has no legat or constructive obligation to pay further contriburions even if the fund does not hold
sufficient assets to pay employees the benefts relating to employee service in the current and prior periods.
