We make the Constitution and Annual Report & Accounts to available to all Trustees prior to appointment. We ensure they are aware of Charity Commission guidance on an ongoing basis.
We also ensure Trustees are apprised of the issues facing our supported shelters; developments within the greyhound racing industry in the UK and Ireland, as well as the canine welfare situation within hare coursing in Spain. We have constructive relationships with fellow greyhound welfare advocates. Our small network of volunteers (max 6) help with fund-raising activities. Our volunteer team has depleted in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. On 27 September the Blue Cross, Dogs Trust, RSPCA and Woodgreen announced the #CutTheChase intitiative: calling for greyhound racing to be phased out in the UK. We are in favour of efforts to phase out greyhound racing in the UK because it would positively impact greyhound welfare. In Spain the Government is considering an amendment to its animal welfare legislation including the exclusion of hunting dogs from the animal protection law. This will adversely impact the welfare of greyhounds in Spain (“galgos”) and is of significant concern to us. We are monitoring developments.
We are alert to a potential increase in the number of greyhounds entering rescue, against the backdrop of a global economic decline. Anecdotal feedback from rescues points to lengthy waiting lists for access to kennel spaces. Taking all of this into consideration we continue to manage our finances conservatively in readiness for a rescue emergency.

**benefit)**|To relieve the suffering of greyhounds who are in need of care and protection and in particular by
providing and maintaining or assisting in the provision and maintenance of kennels and other facilities
for the reception and care of greyhounds who are retired and unwanted or who are otherwise in need
of care and protection; to place in such permanent homes as the trustees may consider appropriate.
In practice, the area of benefit is national and overseas (generally Spain and Ireland).
2022 Plans
Our plans for the period under review continued to be to fund materials, relief and rehabilitation
directly making a tangible improvement to the life of the rescued greyhounds in the shelters we
support.|

||We support 3 shelters rescuing greyhounds:
• Greyhound Rescue, Boston, Lincolnshire (UK): around 25 greyhounds in residence at any one
time;
• Limerick Animal Welfare (Ireland): caring for around 20 greyhounds at any one time
• SPA Scooby, Medina del Campo (Spain) rescuing 300 to 400 greyhounds (“galgos”) on an annual
basis.
Fund-raising for greyhounds in rescue:
We contribute to the cost of kennel improvements and renovations; running costs; dog food and
veterinary fees at our supported shelters.
We sponsor the accommodation and subsistence costs for one particular needy greyhound at the
Lincolnshire shelter who, due to his treatment prior to rescue, cannot be placed in permanent home.
Donated goods:
We collect bedding, donated dog food, canine accessories, transport crates, first aid/medical items
and cleaning materials for the shelter in Lincolnshire. We transport the goods to the shelter at the
Trustees’ personal cost.
If we have similar items useful for the Spanish shelter and know of free road transport heading to it,
we ask the driver to take the donations of aid.
Homing greyhounds:Our practice is to refer homing enquiries within the UK to the shelter we
support in Lincolnshire and to provide the shelter manager with references as appropriate. We do not
receive homing requests from Ireland or Spain.
Public benefit:
During the period our Trustees have had regard to the Charity Commission’s public benefit guidance
when exercising our powers and duties to which the guidance is relevant.
This is a difficult condition to fulfil knowing that the dogs receiving our direct support have been used
either for commercial racing as part of the gambling industry or for hare coursing. Both practices are
detrimental in animal welfare terms. Our priority is to relieve the greyhounds’ suffering. Arguably this
does not generally help the public, which encompasses some of the very people who have exploited
them.
On the other hand, our key public benefit contributions are the following:
• Our awareness raising activities inform the public about the animal welfare issues generated by
greyhound racing in the UK and Ireland, and hare coursing in Spain.
• If we are accompanied by rescued greyhounds at events, we can more easily demonstrate to the
public their value as a pet. This is simultaneously beneficial to the participants.
• The adoption of a rescued greyhound is known to be a rewarding and beneficial experience for the
adopter and the dog.
• Although a small charity, we offer volunteering opportunities and benefit from volunteers who fund-
raise in aid of Greyhound Compassion and spread awareness about the plight of greyhounds.
• We collaborate actively with animal welfare advocates as well as the leaders, staff and volunteers
at our supported shelters, offering mutually supportive assistance for the benefit of rescued
greyhounds where possible.
• A by-product of our sales at car boot fairs is that generally low income families benefit from the
clothes and household items we sell.|
