Structure, Governance and Management 

## **Governing Document** 

The organisation was established in June 2004 and registered as a charity on 20 July 2007. The organisation was established under a Constitution of Association the Objects and Powers of the charity and is governed under its Articles of Association. 

## **Recruitments, appointment induction and training of new trustees** 

The members who is present at an AGM meeting agrees with the current trustees to continue until next year, and not appoint any new trustees during this financial year. Induction and training of trustees is carried out in house in accordance with Charity Commission’s guidelines. 

## **Organisational structure** 

Somali Cultural Resource Centre Coventry has an organisational committee who meets every three months and is responsible of the strategic decisions and policy of the charity. At present the committee has 4 members from a variety of professional backgrounds relevant to the work of the charity. Various volunteers continuously support and work within the organisation.

## **Risk management** 

Risk assessments are carried out by Health and Safety representatives periodically. Assessing potential risks in building and safety of workspaces. Financial and related risks are also noted and assessed, and reviewed annually or as the matter arises. 

## **Objectives and activities** 

- To advance the education and training of the Somali community within Coventry enabling to support their specific needs and advance them in living a meaningful life, and adapt within a new community. 

- The relief of unemployment of the members of the Somali Community in Coventry, by the provision of vocational and skills training, advice and support. 

- To promote the benefit of the individuals of the Somali community without any distinction, to provide facilities and equipment in the interest of social welfare, recreation to improve educational opportunities and better health facilities, and to improve the conditions of life for the said inhabitants. 

- To be financially stable, achieving sustained and varied funding streams for future growth. 

- The number of volunteers continues to slowly grow, from 8 last year to currently 10, who continue to contribute their valuable time in supporting the Charity’s operation and growth. 

## **Significant activities** 

- Our main project to date is the supplementary school which we are particularly proud of, as it is where we have seen the most growth and progress. We have a special affinity towards children and young people, and endeavour to enhance their chances of getting the appropriate support to achieve educational attainment and ensure they become responsible and good citizens. We are well aware of and have experience of young people getting wrongly influenced by external influences and peer pressures leading to anti-social behaviour and criminal activities. Therefore, the supplementary school operates every Saturday during term times and currently attended by 670 children aged between 6 – 16 years.  We employ qualified tutors and volunteers to work towards raising attainment levels in mainstream schools, and to educate the parents in the curriculum who can help and support their children, and understand the importance of education. 

- We exercise a system to bring the children’s confidence levels up and allow them to be the best they can be in what they choose do, as this brings out more success. Celebration of students' success in mainstream education is crucial and something we continuously take pride in from the evidence that our organisation is making a significant difference,

whether it is community language or mainstream academic subjects. We also provide English GCSE tuition in SCRCC Centre on Sunday afternoons between 12 pm to 2 pm. 

## **Achievements and performance** 

This year has been a predominantly successful year despite the challenges during the Covid19 disruptions, and we have helped to ensure high levels of professional support, and pushed our abilities to our utmost best to help the community to better themselves and improve their standards. Our monitoring has shown that the community has benefited greatly and have been able to change their circumstances to their own advantage. 

The organisation committee have been able to use the financial support we have received from various sources and hope in the next coming years we can build on that achievement and continue to progress. This year it was essential for us to provide support to families and individuals at a time people were seeking a lot of advice regarding Benefit Gaps, training, etc. We too had to push ourselves in giving the best possible support through up-to-date and accurate advice. The biggest focus continuous to be supporting the community with the rise in living expenses, ensuring that the community has the right tools to seek help during the winter months and beyond, and with inevitable changes being further supported on a daily basis. 

In 2019, we embarked on a project we named ‘Get that job’ where we conducted training on CVs and how to select and apply for appropriate jobs with advice to increase the chances of employment. We have continued with this project to support individuals during these difficult times. This project was supported by Groundwork UK aimed at those in unemployment. 

The organising committee remain optimistic that adequate resources can be identified to enable SCRCC to continue to go forward in our endeavors to support the varied members of the Somali community of young people, single parents, refugees, asylum seekers and immigrants, can consistently have free access to use our offices and ICT facilities to search for jobs. The weekend supplementary school, Interpretation and Translation, Advice and Information, Education, Health, Welfare benefits, General Signposting and any other information that they need is a continuous effort including out of office hours. During these difficult times, we have been able to support our members in various different ways such as through sending letters, meetings or phone call conversations. 

## **Financial review** 

The board regularly reviews the financial requirements of the Charity, to ensure that the funds are generated and in place to fulfil its obligations. 

## **Principal funding sources** 

During this year SCRCC submitted 4 applications for funding of which and only 1 was approved. The following organisations provided grants and financial support to projects and activities: BBC Children in Need, Ground work Uk and Coventry City Council (Community Resilience). Objectives for each individual fund are monitored in line with audit and evaluation processes, against the delivery, and reported back to them as per their requirement.

It goes without saying that the work would not happen if it were not for our funders and a special word of thanks goes to all of them.  Without the support we get from statutory and voluntary organisations  and working in partnership with them, it would be very difficult for the Charity to exist . In particular, we would like to thank BBC Children In Need who has supported us in our efforts to improve the standards of education for the young people and the Supplementary School and ultimately the living prospects of the community and their future. 

Our aim is to continue to support the upbringing of the young people in our community as they are the future. 

## **Future plans** 

- The aim is to sustain existing programmes within SCRCC and build services in line with the ever changing needs of the Somali community, and find sustainable and meaningful ways to ensure we can continue to enhance their future prospects. 

- To ensure that SCRCC trustee are informed of their roles and responsibilities, better understanding how SCRCC is working and how it supports the trustee. 

- To ensure that SCRCC serves everyone’s needs (staff, volunteers, members, trustees, funders) better. 

- To ensure that SCRCC provide a better understanding of the importance of the Covid19 vaccine, in order to stay healthy and protected. 

- To ensure long term success and sustainability of SCRCC 

- To ensure community members have the financial knowledge to navigate the rise in living costs, and influences of the current environment whether it be political or economical. 

- To assist the desired grow of the Charity, we establish a fund raising co-ordinator within SCRCC. The key task to be to ensure that SCRCC is better able to submit grant applications and procuring other financial support for longer term to stabilise the  operation of the organisation and to continue supporting the community and growth of SCRCC’s advice, guidance and consultancy practice. 

## **Responsibilities of the management committee** 

- Select appropriate accounting policies and apply them consistently 

- Make informed judgements that are reasonable and prudent; and 

- Continue to Prepare the financial statements periodically as the organistion continues to progress. 

The organising committee is responsible for maintaining proper accounting records with reasonable accuracy at all times, inform the financial position to the Charity Commission and to enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Companies’ Act 2006. The organising committee is also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities. To ensure the building, contents and all assets comply with Health & Safety regulations and all activities and uses are legal and law abiding.

The trustees are aware, there is no relevant information of which the Charity Commission are unaware, and each trustees have taken all the necessary steps of any audit information and ensured the Charity’s auditors are made aware of it.
