| Summary of the objects of the charity set out in its governing document Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these |
A. To advance, improve, develop and maintain public education in, and appreciation of, the art and science of music in all its aspects by any means the trustees see fit, including through the presentation of public concerts and recitals but in particular through the presentation of and the study of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach. B. To further such charitable purpose or purposes as the trustees in their absolute discretion shall think fit but in particular through the making of grants and donations. |
|---|---|
| In planning our activities for the period, the trustees kept in mind the Charity Commissions guidance on public benefit. The main focus of the Society’s activities during the year continued to be the public performance of the works of J S Bach, as well as other composers. This was the 30thAnniversary Season of the Choir and so it was felt appropriate to celebrate by holding the Choir’s main concert J S Bach’s ‘Mass in B Minor’ in Exeter Cathedral ( see below) At 30 June 2025, the Society had a membership of 63. The Society’s activities in our 30thSeason included: Our autumn concert held at St Davids Church, Exeter which included Mozart’s Requiem as well as Tavener’s ‘Song for Athene’ As noted above, our spring concert was held at Exeter Cathedral where an audience of 432 (our biggest ever) attended our performance of the ‘Mass in B Minor’. The Choirs final concert of the season took place at St Margarets church, Topsham, where the Choir presented a slightly different event, a (sung) illustrated talk ‘ The making of the Mass’ , illustrating how J S Bach borrowed from earlier works to compile his final great work. The Choir said goodbye to its Musical Director, Jonathan Lucas Wood at the conclusion of the season, we wish him well. Matthew Jeffrey has subsequently been appointed as his successor. |
