Section D Achievements and performance
**Soroti Baptist Medical Centre (SBMC): Summary of the main achievements of the charity** SaltPeter Trust continued to support the Medical Centre throughout 2023 **during the year** both financially and practically. A grant was awarded to SaltPeterTrust by Wales and Africa Fund via WCVA in early 2022 and plans had been made to visit in October 2022 to hold further Pop Up Clinics in the villages near to Soroti. However, there was an outbreak of Ebola in Kampala and Jinja, and so the visit was postponed until January & February 2023 on safety grounds. Seven UK based volunteers travelled to Uganda in late January 2023 and held 3 Pop Up Clinics in rural area for the benefit of the poor, offering free treatment to over 1500 patients. Those needing follow up treatment were referred to and seen at Soroti Baptist Medical Centre. Regular Zoom meetings were held with the administrative and medical staff, but the Centre suffered from declining patient numbers due to the ongoing effects of Covid and droughts on the local economy. The work of the Burkitt’s Lymphoma (BL) Project continued, offering financial for children travelling to Kampala for life-saving treatment. The links established with the major cancer treatment centres, in UCI Kampala, Gulu, and Soroti Regional Referral Hospital were maintained. Several patients presented themselves and were funded to travel to UCI in Kampala to receive treatment. One child who presented after suffering for some time, was funded to travel to the Uganda Cancer Institute, where treatment began, but sadly the child died. His body was returned to Soroti of burial. Ashiraf, an 8 year old boy, was identified with a serious heart defect during the Pop Up Clinics held in July 2019. SaltPeter Trust teamed with Morning Star, a US based charity, and jointly funded transport for him and his mother to Bangalore in India where he had open heart surgery. Both returned to Soroti, Uganda in December 2021, and Ashiraf’s recovery was monitored at SBMC during 2022 and 2023. He is now in school and progress has been good. Felix, an 8 year old boy was referred to Soroti Regional Referral Hospital for a colostomy, and returns to Soroti Baptist Medical Centre for regular checkups. He is now 14, doing well, and benefitting from a regular supply of colostomy bags sent from the UK. Other patients from the Pop Up Clinics now benefit from regular monitoring and the supply of medication from the Medical Centre. Occasional support for a teenage mother started in spring 2023, with food for her & her child, medical treatment and educational training. One of the 2023 team was a Opthalmic surgeon, and we added eye tests for those attending our clinics. Ready reader glasses were dispencsed to those in need. Many with cataracts were identified. Contact was made with the local Opthalmic surgeon in Soroti Regional Referral Hospital, and through the year, an MOU was developed with her department. Cataract surgeries began in 2024. **Soroti Baptist Church.**

Section D Achievements and performance
The Pastor is one of those supported by SaltPeter Trust, and assistance was given to repair the roof of his office, and to print training documents for the benefit of the members.
**Education** : 5 children/young people continued receive financial support for education from SaltPeter Trust, following the reopening of schools in February 2022:
- 1 in Primary
- 1 completed O levels in Secondary
- 1 completed A levels in Secondary
- - 1 completed course in Construction & started a diploma in Architecture
- 1 graduated in Education and started work as a teacher
**Monthly Support** continued for 4 full time Pastors, plus occasional support for a fifth. All are involved in promoting SPT’s work in their area. Support also continued for one SPT graduate who is involved in essential guidance and support for the agricultural projects.

Most income is specific project related & once received is transferred to projects or educational establishments at regular intervals as required. Where money may accumulate it is put into accessible interest bearing accounts. In addition, a large sum of money has been given for a specific children’s cancer project which is ongoing, with funds deposited in a savings account.

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the above charity (“the Trust”) for the year ended 31December 2023 **Responsibilities and** As the charity's trustees, you are responsible for the preparation of the **basis of report** accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”).
I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
