Section D Achievements and performance

Soroti Baptist Medical Centre (SBMC):SaltPeter Trust continued to support the Medical Centre throughout the year both financially and practically. No visits were possible because of Covid-19 restrictions in both the UK and Uganda. One of the lenses of the laboratory microscope failed and a replacement could not be sourced. However, a refurbished Olympus microscope was donated to SPT and was taken to Uganda as excess baggage by a supporter. Regular Zoom meetings were held with the administrative and medical staff, but the Centre suffered from declining patient numbers. The work of the Burkitt’s Lymphoma (BL) Project continued, offering financial for children travelling to Kampala for life-saving treatment. The links established with the major cancer treatment centres, in UCI Kampala, Gulu, and Soroti Regional Referral Hospital, were maintained. Several patients presented themselves and 2 were funded to travel to UCI in Kampala to receive treatment, although one died whilst there,and her body was repatriated to Soroti. Ashiraf, an 8 year old boy, was identified with a serious heart defect during the Pop Up Clinics held in July 2019. A fundraising campaign in late 2020 generated funds to cover in country treatment. Attempts to arrange surgery in Ugandan Heart Institute were unsuccessful, because of delays and restrictions caused by Covid-19, and SaltPeter Trust teamed with Morning Star, a US based charity, who funded transport for him and his mother to Bangalore in India. SaltPeter Trust were able to fund the surgery. Both returned to Soroti, Uganda in December 2021, and Ashiraf is now back at school and is progressing well. Women’s & Widows’ Cooperatives: Further training sessions on ‘Farming God’s Way’ were funded in Tubur and Soroti. Attendees learned practices which reduce ploughing, improve planting, and the mulching of crops to reduce evaporation in dry seasons. There were increases in yields in the trials which followed. Soroti Baptist Churchcontinued to be affected by Covid-19 closures, so Ainon Baptist Church, through SPT, have continued to fund the printing of weekly bible study notes, permitting groups of up to 10 to meet in homes whilst the church has been closed. Education: 6 children/young people continued receive financial support for education from SaltPeter Trust, although this has been seriously affected by school closures from April 20 until late 21 due to Covid-19: - 1 in Primary - 1 beginning O levels in Secondary - 1 doing A levels in Secondary - 1 following a vocational course in Construction - 1 at University in his 2ndyr Education course. - 1 4thyr Mech Eng graduated in late 2021. - Monthly Supporthas also been provided for 3 Pastors for some time, and a fourth was added to the scheme during 2021. All are involved in promoting SPT’s work in their area. Support also continued for one SPT graduate who is involved in essential guidance and support for the agricultural projects. |

Most income is specific project related & once received, is transferred to projects or educational establishments at regular intervals as required. Where money may accumulate it is put into accessible interest bearing accounts. In addition, a large sum of money has been given for a specific children’s cancer project which is ongoing, with funds deposited in a savings account.
