SEBASTIAN HUNTER MEMORIAL TRUST ANNUAL REPORT YEAR ENDED 25 MARCH 2022
_________________
Structure, governance and management
The charity was constituted by a Deed of Trust dated 26[th] July 2006. The trustees, all family members, manage the Trust.
The trustees confirm that they have referred to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission relating to Public Benefit.
They ensure that all children who use the facilities of The Sebastian Hunter Memorial Trust, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, religion or family background have equal access. The libraries, science laboratory and computer facilities are free for all pupils to use.
Objectives and activities
The trustees shall hold the income and capital of the Trust upon trust to apply them for such charitable purposes and such registered charities as the trustees in their absolute discretion think fit from time to time.
The Sebastian Hunter Memorial Trust was set up as an informal charity in 2002 following the tragic death of Sebastian in June 2001. It is run by Seb’s family and the initial project was to build a primary school in a poor, remote village called Senji Mottur in Tamil Nadu, South India. Other projects followed and their progress is described below.
India was chosen as it was a place Sebastian visited and loved, and as a family the trustees have friends locally who are able to project manage and advise them on where money is most needed.
We are enormously grateful to all our supporters for enabling our little charity in memory of our beloved Seb to reach its 21st anniversary this year, we are so pleased that we are still able to help make such a difference in his memory.
Laura, Anna and all the team at The Sebastian Hunter Memorial Trust
Achievements and performance
From the Director’s Desk
For Seb’s Projects, it has been a journey right from the start with the people of the Jawadhi Hills - trying every step of the way to ensure we are aware of the ground reality, feel the pulse of the people, and roll out each of our initiatives in consultation with the community and other stakeholders.
I must confess it has been a very challenging and amazing journey. Each year, just as we begin to see the impact of our work, we are challenged to scale greater heights. The past year was all about connecting science and technology with the people, which had a magical impact with the community witnessing for themselves the use of solar power to pump water from wells into the water purifiers, which provided clean and safe drinking water for the school and the community. It lighted the school further enabling the use of technology to improve education.
We are happy to report our collaborative work has touched upon several of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) namely Quality Education, Nutrition and Health, Safe and clean drinking water, and use of Renewable Energy. We hope in the years ahead we could make greater progress in achieving these goals to the fullest.
There has been no turning back, thanks to the District Administration, the District Education and Health Departments and our Corporate Partners - Corporater, Ncourage and Shape Foundation, and our individual partners, who joined hands with us and shared our dream and vision. You have been the wind beneath our wings, helping Seb’s Projects to scale new heights and dream big.
To all of you my deepest gratitude for being a part of our journey to make a lasting difference in the lives of disadvantaged communities in remote areas by providing a ray of hope.

Financial review
Cash funds of £85,389 (2021- £69,401) remain after supporting the above projects in the year to 25th March 2022.
Reserves
The levels of reserves relate to keeping the charity sustainable over the long-term. The Trustees have spent much of this year fundraising for other causes and as such have not been actively fundraising for Seb’s Trust. They want to ensure that the charity has enough funds to cover the quarterly transfers to finance the projects. The trustees realise that they could transfer more but do not want to end up in a situation where one of them is ill and cannot fundraise and they cannot support the projects – they are not keen to overstretch themselves and are currently in a position to be able to cover what they have committed to.
Reserves are not required to administer the charity.
Charity law requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which show a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity and its financial activities for that period. In preparing those financial statements, the trustees are required to:
-
select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently;
-
make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent; and
-
prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charity will continue in operational existence.
The trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and to enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities Act 2011. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.
Independent examiners
The trustees recommend that Randall & Payne LLP remain in office until further notice.
Signed on behalf of the trustees on
Laura Walford Anna Hunter

Independent examiner’s report to the trustees on the accounts of Sebastian Hunter Memorial Trust
I report on the accounts of the Sebastian Hunter Memorial Trust for the year ended 25 March 2022.
Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner
As trustees you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts and you consider that the audit requirement of section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the Act) does not apply. It is my responsibility to examine the accounts under section 145 of the Act and to state, on the basis of procedures specified in the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners under section 145(5)(b) of the Act, whether particular matters have come to my attention.
Basis of independent examiner's report
My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.
Independent examiner's statement
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:
-
(1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements
-
to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the Act; and
-
to prepare financial statements which accord with the accounting records and to comply with the accounting requirements of the 2011 Act
have not been met; or
- (2) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
