LOST CATS BRIGHTON

TRUSTEES' REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 APRIL 2022

The trustees who are also directors of the charity for the purposes of the Companies Act 2006, present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 30 April 2022. The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019).

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES

Objectives and aims

The charity's main object is to relieve the suffering and distress that cats experience by rescuing abandoned, unwanted, mistreated, injured and homeless cats and kittens, providing veterinary care, food, accommodation as necessary, but with the ultimate aim of rehoming healthy animals where possible. In addition, the charity aims to trap, neuter and return feral cats and to educate the public in feline welfare.

The charity has considered the Charity Commission guidance on public benefit and the trustees are satisfied that the activities of the charity provide public benefit.

Significant activities

The charity has continued over the past year to offer support, advice and information to members of the public via online and telephone enquiries and has been more busy than ever with the Lost and Found Register found on our website and Facebook pages. Our ability to support owners who have lost their cats and try to reunite them continues to be one of our biggest successes; growing year on year and with fantastic feedback regarding the service our dedicated team of volunteers provide. Our Facebook page reached 10,000 followers in December 2021, an incredible achievement and a valuable resource for sharing information about lost and found cats in the community.

During this period and coming out of lockdown there were still Covid restrictions in place and we saw the subsequent knock-on effect of so many owners unable to have their kittens microchipped or neutered due to backlogs at vets. We also experienced difficulties as a rescue charity with obtaining vet appointments due to the NHS Test and Trace causing issues with shortages of vets and vet nurses.

We rehomed 27 cats and kittens and provided foster homes for many older cats with health issues who needed love and care in their final months. We continue to support financially those owners who struggle to fund emergency veterinary care for their cats and unchipped injured strays that are taken to vets. Veterinary costs continue to be our biggest expenditure by far, representing approximately 86% of our overall annual spend in 2021/22.

Other activities

We received one legacy in the year of £10,000 and remain ever dependent on legacies to build up reserve funds whilst our expenses exceed income. Fundraising events were still cancelled or postponed due to Covid restrictions and some fundraising was achieved by online sales of second hand books and other items. We have continued to receive some regular donations from supporters; as well as one-off contributions from grateful families whose cats we have helped to reunite after they have been missing.

With the charity having struggled for some time in respect of human resources, it was agreed that an outside professional organisational review of the charity as a whole, its financial position, its governance, its wider activities and volunteers, would help move the board towards making some concrete decisions about the future. The board unanimously agreed to engage an independent charity consultant to carry this out. Trustees then undertook a period of research to identify a suitable candidate felt to be a suitable match.

Trustees and volunteers were invited to participate and were asked about their current and possible longer-term involvement of the charity, their views on the charity and their thoughts on possible next steps. Recommendations were made to begin a period of recruitment for volunteers for the Lost and Found team and foster carers in the summer of 2022 with trustee recruitment to follow in the spring of 2023 to strengthen the board.

The Trustees would like to thank all the volunteers and foster carers for their commitment and help over the year and a big thank you to all of our supporters and friends of the charity for their generous and continued support.

INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S REPORT TO THE TRUSTEES OF LOST CATS BRIGHTON

Independent examiner's report to the trustees of Lost Cats Brighton ('the Company')

I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the Company for the year ended 30 April 2022.

Responsibilities and basis of report

As the charity's trustees of the Company (and also its directors for the purposes of company law) you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Companies Act 2006 ('the 2006 Act').

Having satisfied myself that the accounts of the Company are not required to be audited under Part 16 of the 2006 Act and are eligible for independent examination, I report in respect of my examination of your charity's accounts as carried out under Section 145 of the Charities Act 2011 ('the 2011 Act'). In carrying out my examination I have followed the Directions given by the Charity Commission under Section 145(5) (b) of the 2011 Act.

Independent examiner's statement

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe:

  1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the Company as required by Section 386 of the 2006 Act; or 2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or

  2. the accounts do not comply with the accounting requirements of Section 396 of the 2006 Act other than any requirement that the accounts give a true and fair view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination; or

  3. the accounts have not been prepared in accordance with the methods and principles of the Statement of Recommended Practice for accounting and reporting by charities (applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102)).

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
