Presidents Report

The Society we have today is among the very best in the North West, with countless nominations and awards to its name, as Lindsey reminded us earlier. It is a Society built on firm foundations – the hard work, creativity, and passion of its members past and present – and I know it has a very bright future ahead.

Keith Greenwood President

What is H.A.O.D.S. & HEYKIDS all about

…..

The Society was formed in 1930, and is affiliated to the National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA) and to the Greater Manchester Drama Federation (GMDF). In 1990 the junior section Hey Kids was formed.

The society produces two full musicals each year: one for the senior section (16+) and one for Hey Kids (8 -18). The society also performs plays and concerts from time to time.

The senior show is normally in early March each year, and the Hey Kids show in mid-October. All performances are held at Heywood Civic Centre.

Rehearsals for the shows are normally held on Monday and Wednesday evenings, with additional Sunday afternoon rehearsals for the last few weeks before the show goes on.

The rehearsals for the senior show usually run from October to March each year, and for the Hey Kids show from May to October, with a break for the summer holidays. Throughout the year the Hey Kids don their brightly coloured Hey Kids T-shirts and take part in various activities to raise money for their society.

Such activities include bag packing at Morrison’s Heywood, carol singing and various other activities. And as you can imagine singing Christmas carols in December wearing those T-shirts shows how committed these young thespians really are!

REVIEW OF THE YEAR 2024/2025

Fundraising and Community Support

Last year was a little quieter on the youth fundraising side. Some of our usual activities, like bag packing and social events, just didn’t quite get off the ground. That was disappointing, but it wasn’t for lack of effort – more a sign of how tough it can be to get wider community backing at times.

But we did have a win with £1,500 secured from Middleton Township. Now, that money didn’t come easily – there was a fair bit of form-filling thanks to Nick. chasing, and if I’m honest, a few tears.

and although we’d been promised £3,000, the rest sadly never came through. Still, that £1,500 was gratefully received, and it reminded us that persistence really does pay off.

Performances – HeyKids and Adult Productions

Our youth group, HeyKids, started the year with Footloose – and what a production it was. Over 1,450 people came to see it, with standing ovations each night. The cast’s energy was incredible, the backstage team worked tirelessly, and the audience support made it unforgettable. To top it off, raffles and programme sales brought in over £1,500. A brilliant effort all round.

December brought our very first wreath-making event at Heywood Baptist Church, organised by myself and Sam. It was a lovely, festive event with mulled wine and hot chocolate. We raised £400, and it was a great way to bring people together. Unfortunately, I also discovered that I’m very allergic to Christmas trees and had a weeks rest in a hospital bed, Lesson learned – next year I’ll stick to the mulled wine.

We also ran a Christmas raffle online which raised £365 – a reminder of how powerful our social media can be when we use it creatively. People of Heywood certainly love a good raffle.

Then came our adult production, Priscilla. Rehearsals were well-organised, thanks to the commitment of the cast and production team. Alongside the rehearsals we held an Easter raffle, raising £525 with the help of generous donations and Claire’s beautifully prepared hampers.

When the show opened, all that hard work shone through. We sold 1,360 tickets and raised a further £1,700 through raffles and programmes. The feedback was fantastic – audiences loved it, and once again, the society proved the high standard of work we can achieve together.

Sponsors and Supporters

We were also fortunate to have new and returning sponsorship this year. Priscilla was sponsored by Mitchells Funeral Services, and Footloose by Blakeleys. Their support makes such a difference, and we are truly grateful for their generosity and

belief in what we do.

Awards and Recognition

Our efforts didn’t go unnoticed either. Young Frankenstein received 9 NODA nominations and 3 awards – including Best Programme for myself, best female for Shirley Harrison and best comedy actor for Mikey Thompson.

Footloose followed with 9 nominations and 3 awards of its own, with congratulations going to Rhiannon Wesley and Courtney. These awards celebrate individual achievements, yes, but they also reflect the standard of the society as a whole – the teamwork, the dedication, and the love of theatre that shines through in everything we do.

Looking Back – and Ahead

So, while this year has brought its challenges – events that didn’t quite happen, promises that didn’t materialise, it has also brought so much to be proud of.

As a non-profit charity, our aim is never about making profits. It’s about putting on outstanding performances, creating a welcoming community, and building friendships that last a lifetime. Sometimes we make a financial loss, but that’s not failure. That’s part of the journey. We take stock, reflect, and look for new opportunities. What matters most is the joy we bring, the creativity we share, and the bonds we continue to strengthen. Finally, I want to say thank you. To every volunteer who gave their time. To every cast member who poured their heart into rehearsals and performances. To the backstage teams, front of house, wardrobe, technical crews – the people who make sure the magic happens behind the scenes. To our sponsors, our supporters, and of course our audiences. Each and every one of these people plays a part in keeping this society alive.

As we look ahead, we must remember something very important: we are all volunteers, and we are all part of the same team. That teamwork, that shared passion, is what keeps this society thriving and makes everything we do possible.

TREASURER’S REPORT

Due to the constant rising costs of producing shows, it is important to note fundraising remains an important factor in the success of the society and to keep us producing fantastic shows

I am reporting on the financial year June 2024 to May 2025. The formal accounts for this year have been prepared by our accountants, from records kept by myself. There are copies of the accounts available. These are the same as previous years. I don’t propose to go through the accounts in detail but if you have any questions I will be happy to answer them at the end of my report.

However, there are a few things that I wish to mention, as follows:-

General Account

There was a loss of £9341 in the general account this year. This compromises all the costs not associated with a specific show including premises

Senior Account

The senior show shows a loss of £7721.45.

Junior Account

The junior show shows a loss of £834 this is due to the hard work of the production team to keep costs down and the hardwork of members applying for grants

The balance statement shows that we have £24,857 in total assets as of 31[st] May 2024

We have secured £1400 in gift aid from those who have allowed us, this helps us tremendously and thankyou for your support. If you know you have not filled in a gift aid form previously or for this year and you are able to please let us know.
