## **2023 Annual Report of Sevenoak Kenya Education Trust SKET Period 01.04.22 - 31.03.23 Charity ref no. 1118914** _Note : Each year in accordance with Charity Commission Rules, an Annual Report is provided. SKET's mission....to enable young Kenyans from poor rural families to complete secondary education......remains the principle object. In the interest of brevity and where no changes to its modus operandi have been necessary, this AR only draws attention to any new prevailing factors or developments that occurred in this reporting year._ **A Trustees** David Debenham (Sec/Treasurer), Jane Debenham, William Palethorpe (deceased Feb.23) **B Structure , Governance and Management** An AGM was held in Feb. 23 attended by the Trustees and by online connection with the two Kenyan Field Officers, John Maundu and Helen Munge. Shortly after it was learnt with great sadness the passing of our Trustee William. He will be missed and effort to find a replacement is ongoing. The Secretary has advised both the Charity Commission and the CAF Bank of this. **C Operation and Activities** As the COVID situation eased much of Kenya continued to experience serious drought. Families particularly those in Kajiado were affected. Trustees met such families in distress having lost livestock and being reduced to having meagre diets. It was agreed by all to offer what emergency help we were able to four families in distress and within a few days, thanks to the proximity of our Trustees living partly in Kenya, help with foodstuffs was made promptly. For this such funds were the subject of an appeal to two Sevenoaks Churches who then responded generously. Otherwise our normal work continued based on linking sponsors to students in Kenya. Securing sponsorship involvement for the four years of secondary education works well. SKET will continue with its policy to only assist students attending Govt. Schools. ## **D Collaboration with Osiligi Charity Projects OCP** SKET has been assisting with enrolment and financial issues for students who completed their education at OCP's primary school and since moved on to various Secondary schools. For two years management help for this was provided using our own experience of dealing with a number of secondary schools. These functions have now been taken back into OCP hands with the advent of online accounting being adopted by schools. Collaboration with OCP will continue only on an advisory basis from 2023 for which no funds will be involved. SKET did register some few students ex Osiligi who will be funded by us for their duration. **E Achievements and Performance** As of March 23, student numbers, excluding 46 students managed for OCP within this accounting year, stood at:- 49 at Boarding and 31 at Day schools. Number completed secondary Dec '22 was 27 Covid followed by drought has impacted the rural poor more that ever before in the 15 years SKET has been in existence. Selection of who we help is correspondingly a critical step. We will continue to revisit our methods of selection attempting to help the most needy at the same time not favouring the brightest but offering chance to different abilities. **F Financial Review** SKET accounts are attached to this report. School fees have not changed dramatically in this reporting year but the value of the Kenyan shilling did begin to slide towards the end of this report. It is predicted that temporarily this will enable UK funds to stretch further but inflationary forces, particularly affecting Kenya as a result of a weaker currency will soon nullify advantages. We continue to be a "no overheads charity" . **Charity Links** who has supported education projects in East Africa has donated a number of times to SKET from its sponsored adventure holidays. Unfortunately it has had to cancel trips that were on the drawing board due to factors beyond its control. For the time being they have wound up and it is timely to record appreciation of their generous support to SKET.
