Charitable Objectives

The aim of the society is to protect, maintain and improve the oral health of older people. This is achieved by providing a forum to further knowledge and increase awareness relating to the oral health, dental needs and treatment of older adults. The society holds two meetings per year when members of various dental specialities and dental care professionals and others with an interest come together to consider and exchange information on the oral health care of older adults.

BSG Annual Scientific Meetings Financial Year 22/23

Summer Meeting - 10[th] June 2022

The BSG Summer Scientific Meeting took place Sheffield on 10[th] June 2022 as a face to face meeting ‘Integrated Dental Care for Older People’. Presentations were delivered by the wider team supporting older people including advance care planning, treating older adults with dignity in a community setting rather than in hospital and shared decision making from consultant community physician and haematology for the older person from consultant in haematology. An update on area of good practice was provided on Residential Oral Care Sheffield initiative relating to oral health and comprehensive oral care for care home residents involving both the community and general dental services. Speakers also provided dental clinical updates and treatment planning for older people in endodontics, implants, removable prosodontics and oral medicine. This was the first face to face meeting post covid and was successful in hosting over 50 delegates.

Winter Meeting - 1[st] December 2022

The BSG Winter Scientific Meeting took place in London on 1[st] December 2022 as a face to face meeting with 105 delegates attending. The theme of the meeting was ‘Innovations in Gerodontology – translating research into practice‘. Speakers provided presentations on potential educational and workforce strategies to meet the oral health challenges of an increasingly older population in the UK, updates from the office of the Chief Dental Officer England on innovative work for vulnerable

older people and future plans for ‘Smiling Matters’ initiative for oral health in care homes. There were also presentations that could be readily applied to the dental clinical environment including minimally invasive dentistry, understanding the experience of wearing dentures and key findings and implications in the ‘dental decisions study’ for treatment decision making with or for people living with dementia. The successful pump-priming grant applicant in 2021 for the joint BSG / Faculty of Dental Surgery (Royal College of Surgeons of England) research grant provided an update on their project ‘3D Scanning and Printing dentures in care homes, a BSG funded feasibility study’.

BSG Annual General Meeting (AGM), 1[st] December 2022

BSG members attended the face to face AGM after the Winter Scientific Meeting on 1[st] December 2022. Reports were received from the chair, president, treasurer, secretary, membership secretary, website editor, social media secretary and sponsorship secretary.

Request for Special Care Dentistry Specialty Trainee representation was accepted and agreed. New committee members were elected. Gerry McKenna was elected to be president in 2023 and Adele Cunningham as president elect for 2024.

OGM meetings were held face to face 9[th] June 2022 and and virtually on and 21[st] October 2022.

BSG charity objectives:

The charity pledged £5000 towards a £10,000 pump-priming grant with the Faculty of Dental Surgery (Royal College of Surgeons of England), for research supporting the society’s aims and towards a project/research aimed at older people. There was a successful application in 2022 for funding towards research into tele dentistry in care homes to improve access to oral health services for vulnerable older people.

BSG provided application for free dental care professional (DCP) places to attend the Summer (10 free places) and Winter meetings (6 free places) in 2022.

BSG poster competition and prizes

A poster competition was organised with winners announced during the Winter Scientific meeting hosted by BSG on 1[st] December 2022. Prizes were offered for the best poster presentations on a subject relevant to older people and oral health, submitted in one of the following categories: case study, audit or quality improvement, innovation or research. There was a prize of £250 for the winner of each category for the following groups; dental care professional, dental core trainee, specialist trainee and dentist. The posters were available to view all day during the meeting and were made available for viewing on the BSG website (www.gerodontology.com). There were 12 entrants to the competition.

BSG committee activity/Links with other groups and Initiatives

Continued links with other societies, charities and agencies (British Geriatric Society, British Society Special Care Dentistry, British Dental Association, Irish Society for Disability and Oral Health) and response to national consultations – Faculty of Dental Surgery, Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) Oral health for older people living with frailty, Delivering Better Oral Health and CQC ‘Smiling Matters’ report.

A BSG committee member published a book as co-author ‘Oral Health and Dental Care in the Ageing Population’. BSG members have provided presentations and submission of articles to peer reviewed journals and other relevant organisations. BSG are members on RCS, RCS, Senate, FDS (England). Members of the charity have been involved in the national Mouth Care Matters project in England and Gwen am Byth in Wales.
