that the process adopted is adequate to identify and mitigate any impact which such risks might have on the Charity and its activities in the future.
Objectives and Activities
The Trust's objectives are to deliver public benefit by supporting the provision of education, training and recreational facilities for young people and vulnerable or isolated adults in the Kirklees area. We recognise that those whom we aim to help face many challenges. As part of our support we work with them to develop the confidence, motivation and skills that they need in everyday life. In particular (but not exclusively), we support those hard to reach or with additional needs to develop these personal skills, both physical and mental, by promoting and participating in adventurous, volunteering and skilled activities.
To support this objective our activities primarily involve fundraising, working in partnership with other community groups, charities and businesses on projects to improve access. We make grants to improve resources and make small grants to individuals facing hardship or additional costs due to special needs, to meet the costs of participating in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award and other adventurous, volunteering and skilled activities.
Our Trust was established in 2007 with a £50,000 donation from another charity. This donation was intended to be invested to provide income to support the Trust's work.
Financial Review
The overall financial position of the Charity is presented at the end of this report. As is shown, our income increased by c.£22,000 on 2022/23. This was thanks to a large, one-off grant. We experienced a £2,000 decrease in donations and c.£1,000 less fundraising income. This is unsurprising given the continued rise in the cost of living. That said, we were still able to hold a profitable annual fundraiser. Rising interest rates were also welcomed for our reserves held.
Spending however also increased, by c.£52,000, as we were able to finalise the long-awaited purchase of a new vehicle for use by young people completing DofE and adventurous activities. Our net position was an overall deficit of c.£25,000.
Circumstances dictated that we exceed the originally anticipated budget to this vital large capital project during this financial year, which was the major contributor to the deficit. However, the overall position of the Trust’s finances remains healthy, and one which will allow us to continue our activities whilst concurrently considering further grant, fundraising and investment opportunities to support our longer term visions.
Annual report and our Plans for the Future
We have continued to work closely with the Kirklees Duke of Edinburgh’s award team, to support and strengthen the facilities available in to young people in Kirklees. We are also pleased to have been able to support The Quarry Hill Centre Community Hub, where the Amaze Open Award Centre meets.

Our largest project this year was the purchase of a new minibus, and we are grateful to Variety – the Children’s Charity, and its benefactors for their generosity to support this. We also received some individual donations, for which we are also very grateful.
Alongside this, we were able to provide funding to a number young people and local organisations for expedition and residential sections of their DofE award. We also funded a number of training opportunities for volunteers, who are vital to supporting the delivery of activities to young people at an affordable cost.
We were pleased that the annual Christmas fayre was once again a success, returning for the second time post-pandemic. This was, as always, a fantastic opportunity to showcase facilities available as well as to raise vital funds to support our charity’s work. We raised around c.£3,600, and look forward to building on the strengths of this year to continue grow the event, as well as looking for expanding our fundraising endeavours.
In February 2024, an organisation we work closely alongside (the Outdoor Learning team) received a threat of suspension to its funding by Kirklees Council. The trustees, volunteers, and our supporters worked tirelessly during this time to help prevent the funding from being stopped, and we are delighted that this was successful. We are committed to keep supporting the team, and working alongside the council to ensure outdoor and adventurous activities remain accessible to all.
It remains a priority to the Trust to maintain healthy reserves whilst still being able to continue to support provision of adventurous activities in Kirklees; given our increased spending this year, we will be exploring further opportunities for income generation.
