Chairman’s Report for Ivybridge Youth For Christ

Well, it’s been my privilege to be Chair of Trustees for IYFC for another year – a year where many hundreds of young people have come into contact with either Elis, Helen or one of the many volunteers who give of their time and skills for God’s Kingdom.

Youth for Christ is all about the four ‘D’s – Declaration, Demonstration, Decision and Discipleship and once again, the period between September 2024 and August 2025 gave opportunities for young people to engage with all four.

In addition to the regular events and scheduled meetings we saw a trip to ClayArt (South Brent Bridge Project), a trip to see The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (Wired), an Away Day to the Beaver Lookout in Plymouth (Youth Alpha) and attendance at Satellites – a Christian festival at Shepton Mallet (ReWired). In addition, in April, the BYFC evangelist Jon Jackal performed at the Bridge Project, Ivybridge. The things listed here, as well as the week-by-week ministry that goes on across our region, come rain or shine are a testament to the work and witness of the IYFC team.

The trustees, many of them fairly new to the charity, brought a range of skills and experience to the oversight of Elis and Helen whilst, at the same time, deepening their own understanding of what the mission and vision of IYFC are all about.

It remains for me to extend a truly massive ‘Thank You’ to all those who hold the ministry in their prayers, support it financially or give of their time, skills and resources as active volunteers. You may not see the results of what you are doing on a cold and wet winter evening but you are ‘walking the walk’ of God’s love and may well be the only source of light and love in a young person’s world.

Director’s Report for Ivybridge Youth for Christ

Many thanks to our supporters, volunteers, and staff, who have enabled us, with God’s help, to reach out to over 800 different young people in a variety of contexts this year. We seek to provide opportunities for young people to connect with our work in various ways, both at school and during their free time. Some young people may access a drop-in with large numbers of others; some may access smaller groups that require parental consent and greater structure. The latter provide opportunities for working together, participating in wider activities,

and learning about life and God. We are grateful that we are able to use churches and community spaces to host our various groups with very little cost to the charity. We are also grateful to those volunteers who have stepped up to assist and lead as we’ve expanded our work.

We give God the glory for his sustaining power and goodness during another busy academic year.

Rock Solid – Wednesday lunch at Ivybridge Community College for Years 7-9.

Rock Solid, the younger Christian Union at Ivybridge Community College, has had a great year, meeting 35 times, and hosting 29 different attendees overall.

One highlight from the year was our “It’ll Cost Ya” session about the cost of following Jesus. Each young person was given a penny for the ‘Penny Curling’ game. If they thought that following Jesus was worth the cost, then they were asked to give their penny back. 7 out of 9 young people did so. Fab news!

Another highlight was enabling a pupil to lead parts of the sessions. We endeavor to encourage young people to take a more active role in any of our groups where appropriate. As they grow into adulthood, we trust that this responsibility will yield great benefit to the public as they serve society.

Other sessions included teaching on Advent and Christmas, the House on the Rock, Gentleness (Fruit of the Spirit), ‘How a Dice Can Show That God Exists’ and Justice (or injustice). We trialed the BYFC video series called Why You Matter, giving feedback on the positives and negatives of this new resource which has now been rolled out nationwide.

We were thrilled that 4 of the group went on to attend Youth Alpha following our promotion of it at Rock Solid.

As the academic year ended, we encouraged a wonderful group of Year 9’s to move up to Orbit, our older group. Many had attended regularly for 2 years and were very engaged in each session, a true joy to have in the group.

Orbit - Thursday lunch at Ivybridge Community College for Years 10+

Pre-pandemic, we ran 2 groups at the ICC and it is great that the second (older) Christian Union group resumed, with Jon, one of our volunteers, offering to take the lead.

Although Orbit didn’t take off numerically at first, Jon visited ICC 22 times with 12 young people accessing it over the year. Jon produced some excellent material and one of the girls who attended both Orbit and our Discipleship group declared herself a Christian. Jon’s teaching topics are largely based on the same topics as Rock Solid.

Orbit took a break in the summer term due to the host teacher going on maternity leave. Despite the slow start, we were expecting growth for the following academic year as the Year 9’s moved up.

– The Bridge Project South Brent Monday evenings at the Rec, South Brent

Session 1 - 6.30-7.45 pm for School Years 6 - 8 Session 2 - 8-9.15 pm for School Years 9+

Many young people took advantage of the provision of free hot chocolate, biscuits, games, etc. on Monday nights during term time.

We met for 32 weeks of the academic year, welcoming 77 different young people. We averaged 17 young people attending the younger group and 5 at the older group.

Most young people who attended came from South Brent although some travelled from Ivybridge, Avonwick, Diptford or Harbertonford and even Totnes and, occasionally, Stoke Gabriel and Paignton. We had an even mix of boys and girls attending, and it’s also worth mentioning that several young people, from across both age ranges, travelled from South Brent to attend our IYFC run youth café in Ivybridge on Friday nights as well.

On top of the regular group, it was exciting to offer a ClayArt trip for some of the older group in the Autumn. Originally aimed at a group of Year 11 and 12 girls, in the end we took 4 boys from Year 9. They really enjoyed themselves and were pleased with their pottery painting. It took less time than expected, so we spent some time at a funfair in Plymouth, walked on the Hoe and had some food at

Crispy’s. The trip prompted conversations about future trips ranging from Adrenalin Quarry to actually throwing pots on a wheel.

Recruiting volunteers remained a huge challenge for us in South Brent and we were grateful to those who stepped in from Ivybridge when the need arose. Our 2 regular volunteers gave so much time over the year to support the youth of the town in this way. They were also able to give a joint report to a Methodist Circuit meeting in Newton Abbot.

As well as support from local churches and individuals, we were also able to receive money to spend on equipment from FEOFFEES, a church-linked grant making organisation, and the Mothers’ Union.

For most of this financial year, our regular youth café expenses and salaries were claimed from the Diocesan Youth Fund held by St. Petroc’s Church, South Brent. In March, a further proposal was put forward to FEOFFEES to enhance the education provision of the club (in the broadest sense). The bid was successful and the money was allocated to salaries, recreational activities, residentials, trips and weekly activities for when the Diocesan Fund gets used up.

As well as having an Educational Fund, FEOFFEES, also have a Welfare Fund. At the 2025 National Youth for Christ Conference, we were struck by the need to develop some well-being provision for local young people. We applied for money to train a team of people to deliver the youth version of Kintsugi Hope, a wellbeing discussion group. We also received funds towards helping an 18-yearold from South Brent to join a working party helping a Christian charity in Romania. Sadly, due to health issues, he was unable to start the application process, and funds will be kept aside for the future.

As it’s a church that is very closely linked to FEOFFEES, St Petroc’s Church, South Brent are holding these funds, and we can claim expenses on a monthly basis from them. Wonderfully, South Brent Recreation Association, where we hold our youth groups, once again gave us free rent for the 2025 calendar year. This is a great affirmation of our work and its value to the South Brent community.

The end of an era – The Bridge Project bus is no longer ours. After many attempts to find parts and solutions to failing the MOT, it became very clear that we were at an impasse and ownership was transferred to CleanSpares (a breakage company) as of September 2024. The cost of removing the bus, we were told, would balance out the worth of any scrap value. However, in August 2025 I

received a message from a member of the public saying that he’d recently bought our bus from a dealer, and did we still have a set of keys. This was surprising as we thought it had already been scrapped. After visiting Ivybridge police station for advice, I contacted the person and arranged a meeting. The man donated £150 to IYFC for the spare keys and some accessories that I hadn’t yet disposed of. This was actually donated in the 2025-26 financial year. I insisted that, for safeguarding reasons, I see photos of the vehicle without our IYFC branding stickers on. He duly obliged.

The Bridge Project in South Brent had its usual break from normal service for the summer holidays. However, we partnered with St Petrocs Church (who had received their own funds from FEOFFEES) to run a summer programme. It became clear that the church wanted IYFC to take a lead on this.

Summer Programme

The Summer Youth Programme ended up being 3 afternoons of specific activities for young people at the South Brent Recreation Ground pavilion. The 3 sessions were pottery (delivered by an outside potter), a board games afternoon and a fun food factory (including making candy floss, a chocolate fountain and pizza making).

This was an extra addition to my summer workload in terms of organisation, promotion, co-ordination and preparation. However, young people really enjoyed it, and it did serve to maintain some contact with our regulars after the less consistent Summer Term provision as a result of the Bank Holiday Mondays.

The Bridge Project in Ivybridge opened for 32 weeks this academic year and we welcomed 343 different young people.

Due to the drop-in nature of The Bridge Project, attendance numbers are generally high but with some seasonal variance. Numbers were high in the Autumn before dropping over the Winter due to the very bad weather and much illness. However, numbers increased again in the Spring before decreasing again in the summer when young people traditionally enjoy outdoor activities such as going to the local rivers, beaches and moorland.

It was encouraging to see 3 of the lads from The Bridge Project joining Wired Youth Group on Thursday evenings as well as continuing with Friday attendance. One of them remembered us from our involvement in The Easter Experience when his primary school visited that a couple of years ago.

Another girl in Year 7 remembered me from the assemblies that I led at Cornwood Primary School. These primary school contacts, I believe, give young people confidence to attend what we are providing for them at The Bridge Project, a safe place for all. Some young people used to attend Shine clubs that we ran at The Erme Primary School many years ago and others knew some of our volunteers from their time with Girls’ Brigade, or Brownies at Ivybridge Methodist Church.

Volunteer-wise, 2 of our volunteers have had to drop back for health and family reasons but we were pleased to gain a new volunteer in John Williams (Ivybridge Baptist Church pastor). We are also grateful to those who step in on an ad-hoc basis to supplement the dedicated regular team.

Jon Jackal, British Youth for Christ Evangelist

The Bridge Project is very much about demonstrating God’s love and we wanted to build on this by providing an opportunity to hear more about the source of this love. On Friday 6 December, Jon Jackal, an evangelist with British Youth for Christ was due to perform at The Bridge Project to give a ‘live music lounge’ vibe. Sadly, this didn’t happen due to a named storm stopping him from being able to drive down. Mocktails were given out anyway, which the young people very much enjoyed.

The visit was rearranged for April 25[th] & 26[th] to tie in with the launch of Alpha Youth 2025. Jon joined us at The Bridge on for the Friday night youth café

sessions and was able to chat to the young people and share some of his songs with them. One parent from South Brent contacted me to say how much her son enjoyed himself. The Friday night session helped us invite more young people to the Saturday night concert. Jon performed his own songs and shared his testimony to reach out to young people. Sadly, the turnout was low and was also disrupted by some youth who were badly behaved both in the concert and outside. It’s hard to know how much positive impact came from this event. Jon was able to pray, even with a few of the disruptive ones, and we later heard positive remarks such as “That was cold!!” which apparently means that they enjoyed it.

18+ Young Adults

We continued to support and meet with some young adults who had left the regular youth programme. This included meeting with a young mum in her late teens, meeting with a young person who returned home to Devon for a visit and going for a walk with a young man (now in his 30’s) whose testimony I shared at our Summer Volunteer Thank You Party.

In March, we had the privilege of attending the wedding celebration of Matt and Sophie. Sophie grew up coming to lots of Ivybridge Youth for Christ clubs and they have both volunteered with the charity since becoming young adults.

In April, we met with 2 young adults who came to The Bridge Project and Wired regularly as youth. Sometimes one of these young adults reaches out for support when struggling, but it was also good to catch up at a time when she felt well.

During this year, Helen and I spent quite a chunk of time supporting a teenage young adult who was caring for her younger brother, meeting in cafes, providing referrals to Ivybridge Foodbank and so on.

Although this work is ad-hoc, it is encouraging to see young people continuing to turn to our team for support, friendship and in times of celebration.

– – Wired Youth Group Thursday evenings at Ivybridge Methodist Church for Years 7+

Wired had an encouraging and exciting year, with 18 young people accessing the group, including some new members who joined via The Bridge Project in Ivybridge. This is a great example of how we encourage faith development via British Youth for Christ’s 4D Evangelism Strategy (Demonstration, Declaration,

Decision, Discipleship). The Bridge Project is very much about ‘demonstration’ of God’s love, whereas Wired has a ‘declaration’ focus with weekly talks to encourage faith. There were some tensions between the newer boys and the established group of girls, but the girls handled it with maturity and hopefully learned something about accepting different people.

In the Autumn we braved a trip to Supertramp trampoline park, which was a huge success. Ten young people, 3 leaders and a parent also attended. We hired a minibus from Compton Primary School in Plymouth.

Our Christmas build-up lasted for 4 sessions with the highlight being the Open Doors Christmas Party, where we had a lot of fun whilst also remembering the children suffering persecution for their faith in Bangladesh. We used the Open Doors Christmas Party youth resource. Traditional party games were played along using some Bangladeshi boy band music, which was particularly popular!

Examples of topics covered this year include: Jesus and the Herd of Pigs, ‘Making a Difference’ and ‘Recognising our Uniqueness.’

At Easter, we went to on our long-anticipated trip to see The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe at the Princess Theatre, Torquay. A group of 15 attended, mainly from Wired. Remaining quiet in the theatre was a challenge for some, but thankfully we were sat in a back row! One young person expressed genuine surprise that Aslan the Lion was a representation of Jesus Christ.

A highlight of the year was a 3-week series based on the TV show Taskmaster and the board game that accompanies it. We held various challenges including writing a lullaby for the Taskmaster and ordering a pizza without using words such as pizza, cheese, tomato, etc. In the final week, the young people had to bring in their best green thing and some of their efforts were astonishing in the amount of effort they put in. For example, one young person produced a special drawing of me playing my guitar all dressed in green and another made green buns with Taskmaster flags in each one. We were grateful to a friend with a 3D printer, who helped make a Gold Taskmaster trophy of my head, like the one from the show.

Another highlight, over another 3-week period, was the Great British Bake-Off, with prizes bought from Stand Up to Cancer. The first week ‘signature’ challenge was to make 3 identical decorated ice-cream biscuit sandwiches. The second week was a ‘technical’ challenge to bake Helen’s childhood favourite chocolate squares, following a recipe they’d never seen before. The final week was a

‘showstopper’ week. It was one of the best nights of youthwork we’ve experienced. Everyone had the opportunity to bring their own cakes, but we provided starter cakes for those who couldn’t. The theme was ‘nature’. Every single young person astounded us with their focus and effort. They displayed incredible creativity, honesty and generosity – sharing their items with others. Some of the young people who struggle with concentration at school stayed engaged for the whole evening. We held a celebration evening to praise them for their efforts – with a meal of pizza, chips and ice-cream sundaes.

Each week, we gave talks linked to each baking challenge. In the final week, Helen shared her friend, Anne Legge’s, final blog post (Anne passed away from cancer just prior to Covid). Anne was an example of someone leading a Christ-like life even in exceptionally hard circumstances.

At Wired, we were also thrilled to have a visit from Ginnette Martin, a local Christian and Temple Spa rep. She provided an evening of pampering for the girls, as well as some incredible goodie bags for them to take home.

We were going to run a trip simultaneously for the Wired boys on that evening, but with the light evenings and excellent weather, their attendance had tailed off considerably in the Summer Term. Knowing that they’d missed out prompted them to come along to the final session, a Skittles night, and it was good to see them back.

It was also very encouraging that 3 members of Wired went to Satellites over the summer, two as a result of their Ivybridge Youth for Christ connections.

Wired Theatre Trip and Bake Off

– ReWired Discipleship Group Wednesday at The Bridge Youth Venue, for years 7+

Following on from the Youth Alpha in the Summer Term, we started a Discipleship group called ReWired (although the young people still called it Alpha!!). The group was small but consistent.

Kerry continued to volunteer with the group and has been excellent. Helen also volunteered organised a cake rota. Sara joined the team while Kerry was away and made a good contribution with discussions, games and food preparation.

The year started with a course recommended by Youth Alpha - an introduction to the books of Luke and Acts. Bible Project videos were shown and discussion questions accompanied them. Some good conversations were had, and the young people introduced a phone jail to help them focus.

From Spring half-term onwards, we used the Alpha Life on Purpose videos which are designed to help young people think about how they display their faith. They considered who they might invite to the next Youth Alpha Course.

On either side of the Easter holidays, we looked at the Alive Encounters video series. Each video explored a theme based on the encounters that people had with Jesus after the resurrection.

ReWired games, Alpha Youth Away Day and Alpha Youth at the Bridge

Alpha Youth

ReWired turned into Alpha Youth following our Jon Jackal concert. We were very impressed with the updated version of the course.

We advertised heavily in the iMag, on our website, on hundreds of flyers that were given out, and at the Jon Jackal concert. We attracted 9 members to the group, some from Wired and some from Rock Solid. We were grateful to Jon, who joined the volunteer team. Three of the young members helped on the team, purchasing ice-cream, serving food, setting up and clearing up. They also grew in confidence by leading games.

Our Away Day was held on Saturday 14[th] June at Poole Farm in Derriford Community Park, Plymouth, where they have several nature walks and a beaver lookout station. The venue was great – totally immersed in nature, they even had a compost toilet! The young people were attentive during the two sessions about

the Holy Spirit, and we also had a time of quiet to wait on Him. Some of them expressed that they had really felt His presence. We spent time on walks, playing outdoors, playing board games and enjoying McFlurries as an end of day treat. Naturally these were well received.

We were grateful to have a team of bakers who provided cakes and snacks for the sessions, and for the donation of hoodies for the young leaders.

The course ended and we took a summer break. Some young people were keen to return in September and excited about the prospect of using their musical skills to lead worship sometime in the future.

- Satellites Youth Festival, Bath and West Showground, 6 11 August

Helen and 2 members of the Discipleship group joined with Plymouth Methodist Central Hall’s (PMCH) youth group to attend Satellites Youth Festival. It was a wonderful time with many highlights. Socially, this included great food, bubble tea, visiting charity stands, silent discos, playing board games and much more. Spiritually, it was jam packed. The day started with Bible studies, with 5 different streams to choose from (creative, journalling, deep study, conversation or contemplative). The girls took themselves to the journalling sessions with friends they’d made from PMCH. Worship services occurred twice a day and were full of challenging Bible teaching based on the book of Matthew. There was also lively worship. Both girls responded in their own way and holy communion was shared at the end of the week. The 2 girls have been independently meeting up with 2 friends from PMCH to go to a café for Bible study. Long may this enthusiasm last.

Primary school assemblies

Cornwood Primary School Nativity Service

Rev. Paul Hinckley asked me to step in for him by closing in prayer at the school’s Christmas event at the church in Cornwood. I was pleased to do this as I had been unable to deliver an assembly during the Autumn term.

Spring and Summer terms saw a return to regular assemblies, as I led one on ‘being thankful’ in April and ‘perseverance’ in July.

– Shine Holbeton Wednesday lunchtimes in Holbeton Primary School – and Shine Newton Ferrers after school in Newton Ferrers Primary School Both for Years 3-6

Both Shines had a fun year, with teaching based around a wonderful new resource – Discover Good News for Everyone – Exploring the Bible. This was produced by Good News for Everyone, formerly known as the Gideons. It’s a very colourful A4 magazine with many of the key Bible stories in it. Most weeks Helen took a portion of the Bible from the magazine and did corresponding activities. Each child had their own copy which they kept at the end of the year.

The groups focused on Moses for the first half term. Some session activities included a game based on Moses being rescued from the River Nile, A ‘burning bush’ craft for Moses and the Burning Bush, a coloured story wheel of the 10 plagues for Moses and leading the Children out of Israel (Holbeton only). One child declared it her favourite Shine craft ever! We also had drama at Newton Ferrers for Moses and the Parting of the Red Sea. The study finished with Moses and The Ten Commandments . They held a scavenger hunt looking for 10 numbered stones and a card with each commandment hidden on. They then learnt the 10 commandments with hand signals.

We hope that the variety of different ways of engaging with the Bible helped each individual to be able to connect with the text. We try to accommodate people’s specific interests, for example in Newton Ferrers, we had a word search mega fan and so we often sourced specific word searches for him instead of colouring!

A highlight from the Autumn term was that one parent told a volunteer that their child really enjoyed Shine and had told them the whole story of Moses. It is encouraging to know that the teaching is being remembered.

In Holbeton, at Christmas, a group of year 6s returned, due to word getting out that nativity slime was being made! To see that they were still willing to engage for this special event brings hope that their time at Shine had made an impact.

The slime was used to talk about the ‘mess’ of Christmas; that the actual nativity was not as sugar coated as is often portrayed.

Around Valentines Day each year, both clubs take time to talk about God’s love, this year focusing on 1 Corinthians 13. To complement this the children decorated heart biscuits. First, there were small hearts, and Helen put a ‘surprise’ on each of them for the children. The surprises were chilli beans (Newton Ferrers) and onions (Holbeton) to demonstrate that love isn’t always like the movies! Sometimes we have to care for people who we don’t want to care for. The children were shocked. These were then replaced with much bigger biscuits and nice toppings (to the children’s relief!!) to show how much God loves us.

Other topics across the year have included: Psalm 23, An overview of Jesus’ ministry using 4 canisters with items related to Jesus’ birth, miracles, teachings and Easter hidden amongst sand, bird seed, lentils and slime. ’ – – Jesus being Baptised, Jesus teaching Ask, Seek, Knock, Jesus heals The Ten Lepers and other healings and Jesus and the Lost Coins.

Shine drama, Good Samaritan mosaics and Leaver’s Party

The children spent 5 weeks studying Holy week. Week 1 looked at Jesus in the – Temple overturning tables . A ‘pea fayre’ was held which involved the children earning peas for various tasks and challenges. There were also talks about Jesus wanting justice and fairness for all people and a scratch art craft of Micah 6:8. Jesus washing feet and the Last Supper: The focus here was on ‘remembering Jesus’ through communion. The children did an anagram puzzle of Jesus’ words – to put in their book. Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane the children decorated a praying hands picture, and a cross picture. These items were placed, along with flowers, grass and leaves, in several layers of clear plastic to create a lasting - bookmark. Jesus and the Cross In Newton Ferrers, children created ‘fuzzy cross craft’ whereas in Holbeton they used ‘sand art craft’. Both crafts were used alongside teaching from the Bible. The series finished with Resurrection, Easter

Special. At Holbeton there was a quiz and an egg hunt followed by more sand art. At Newton Ferrers there was an egg hunt, and the children made Easter bracelets.

The importance of caring for the earth is a core value of Ivybridge Youth for Crhist and there is an annual focus on this – this year linked to Earth Day. “What’s in the Box” was played, placing items from God’s Creation in it for the children to guess. Children did a turtle diamond art craft at Newton Ferrers and leaf sticker pictures at Holbeton.

At Holbeton it was good to reinforce the teaching that the children had had in school around Pentecost. We decorated biscuits with a fire design and used a video and a 3D colouring craft. The children already knew the account really well.

Our big artwork for the year centered around the account of the Good Samaritan We spent 2 weeks looking at this key passage of Scripture and teaching them about loving others. We started big art projects – in Holbeton children produced individual artworks with a mosaic heart and a pyrography bible verse. In Newton Ferrers, we made a giant artwork mosaic heart and used pyrography to make the words ‘love God, love your neighbour’.

One of the highlights of the year in terms of fun was a Miracles of Jesus Escape Room - Both clubs had of fun exploring the miracles of Jesus via an Escape Room activity. There were 8 puzzles to solve, clues to be found, codes to be deciphered, and Bible verses to be analysed.

For the last session of the year at Holbeton the children played again (by request) What’s in the Box, with items including silly string or a toy rat! The game drew a crowd and gave the opportunity to say goodbye to some year 6’s who had been regular members in the past. We were learning about the Calming of the storm and used shaving foam to do an interactive prayer task around the trials we can face.

A highlight in Newton Ferrers was a girl returning to the club and how she recalled a testimony of an answer to prayer that had been shared the previous year. It is so encouraging to know that the things we say are remembered and have an impact on the children.

Helen held a party for the three year 6 pupils who were about to leave Newton Ferrers school. They played the traditional Pie Face and watched a final video about Easter. It is always sad to say goodbye. Helen gave each child a small gift in

the form of a book related to Jesus and their particular interests (e.g. one boy had a wordsearch Bible book).

Helen continues to be joined by 2 volunteers, at Holbeton and 4 at Newton Ferrers. She is grateful for their input, especially as there is often change of days to avoid clashes with other events at the school.

This annual event, led by Ivybridge Methodist Church, went well after a wet start setting up. Some families with very small children took part in our Kick Dart stall but sadly not many young people in the 8-18 age group came.

Easter Experience

The Easter Experience ran in the last week of the Spring Term and was organised by Sam, the Families Worker at Ivybridge Methodist Church, supported by Ivybridge Salvation Army and Ivybridge Youth for Christ. 6 Stations of the Cross were visited by children and staff from local primary schools. I was able to man the Hand Washing station (an adaptation of Foot Washing) for several sessions reaching dozens of children from 3 of the local primary schools in Ivybridge.

East Soar

In July, Helen and I were pleased to help Jasper from Kingsbridge Youth for Christ for an afternoon at a youth camping weekend away at East Soar Outdoor Experience. We helped with a prayer workshop and helped with washing up to enable the team to engage better with the youth.

Behind the Scenes

British Youth for Christ:

During the year we appreciated meeting with Youth for Christ centres in South Devon for mutual support and encouragement, as well as attending with the wider Youth for Christ South West Cluster in Taunton in October.

Youth for Christ continued to invite Centres to join a monthly staff meeting via Zoom. We joined in when we could and found it encouraging and helpful.

Mike, Helen and I attended the British Youth for Christ conference in January. This was held in Whitemoor Lakes, near Lichfield. It was a beautiful setting and a great conference. We had teaching from Justin Brierley and Dr Johannes Hartl

amongst others. There were two main sessions a day as well as seminars, prayer meetings and prophetic prayer sessions. Mike attended a session especially for Trustees. There was also a lot of fun – a book swap, a craft session, a banquet and a great comedian. I think it’s fair to say we came back very encouraged.

Helen and I attended the Youth for Christ South West Focus Day in Taunton on Thursday 20[th] June. We were introduced to some new research, undertaken by Laura Hancock from British Youth for Christ about young people’s views on faith.

Networking

Throughout the year, we had various meetings with local church leaders including Rev. Gina Radford (regarding South Brent development) and Pastor John Williams (to welcome him as the new Pastor of Ivybridge Baptist Church). Helen met with Rev. Kim Lovell to catch up on our work in her area (Shine Clubs) following her maternity leave.

I raised awareness of the charity, as well as led services at various churches throughout the year: South Brent Methodist Church in January, Yealmpton Methodist Church in February, and in July at both St. Johns, Ivybridge and Ivybridge Methodist Church. Helen and I were asked by Gill Cowsill to attend a reflective evening service at Ivybridge Methodist Church to share about how our work brings hope. We also shared at both services at Plymouth Methodist Central Hall the day after the Jon Jackal concert. This was to formally let the church know what we do, following a £3000 donation.

I attended the West Local Care Partnership Children & Young People Mental Health Working Group Meeting on 2 occasions, where we discussed eating disorders and the effects of vaping, among other things.

Governance, Finance and Fundraising

Chartering

In September, the staff team completed the Chartering paperwork for the academic year September 2023-August 2024 to submit to British Youth for Christ.

AGM and Charity Commission Return

The AGM for September 2023 - August 2024 was held on April 26 at Ivybridge Methodist Church. Charity Commission Return was submitted on May 8th.

Fundraising:

We are very grateful to 2 supporters (one of whom used to attend Wired) who held a stall in aid of Ivybridge Youth for Christ at the Ivybridge Christmas Event raising around £100. They were selling products, made by a family member who was a regular Ivybridge Youth for Christ supporter and had sadly passed away.

The Non-Stop November challenge raised over £3100. It was a huge physical challenge held at Ivybridge Leisure Centre – swimming the equivalent of the English Channel, running a marathon and cycling the distance from Lands’ End to John O’Groats, all within the month of November! We are grateful to all those who prayed for us, and to those who donated so generously.

In March, we held our Annual Quiz at The Watermark in Ivybridge, raising a healthy sum of money. We were grateful to 2 of the young people, who ran a stall selling cards and jigsaws and helped us with the set up and clear up. We used our new electronic card reader, which was a very popular payment option for people at the quiz.

The Team

Staff Team

Training wise, Helen, our Administrator and Youth and Children’s Worker had a busy year. In September 2024, she completed the free ASIST (Suicide Prevention) Training – and used her learning to varying degrees on three separate occasions. In November 2024, she also completed the free Mental Health First Aid course in Tavistock. Helen took part in a course focusing on supporting people affected by domestic abuse. This was provided through Ivybridge Methodist Church. She also

passed a First Aid training course provided free by Plymouth Methodist Central Hall, due to her voluntary efforts there.

Helen continued to meet with Sara Bromage for pastoral support.

I was grateful for a 3-day retreat at Sheldon in April to pray about, and prepare for, the forthcoming Alpha Youth course. I also renewed my First Aid training and attended Train the Trainer webinar with Christian Safeguarding Services.

Youth Work Volunteers

Two volunteers joined us for the First Aid training, one from The Bridge Project in Ivybridge and one from The Bridge Project in South Brent.

We are aiming to be proactive in offering training to volunteers, should they wish to undertake this kind of development.

Our annual volunteer Thank You event was held on July 24[th] at Lukesland House and Gardens. It was well attended and many sent messages back saying how much they had enjoyed themselves. We were assisted by some of the young people and a very helpful parent.

Prayer Support Team

Termly prayer meetings continued throughout the year. St John’s Church Hall hosted us in October and December 2024. In the December meeting, we specifically prayed for the Christmas outreach and the Jon Jackal visit that was sadly cancelled due to a storm. Our Spring meeting was part of the 2025 AGM, to pray for the rearranged Jon Jackal concert taking place that evening, the launch of the Alpha Youth course, and the relationship with the local secondary school.

We continued to connect in prayer, by phone and email, with Catherine Green, our Prayer Partner from British Youth for Christ, on a roughly fortnightly basis.

Our weekly prayer email continued to garner support, with over 130 people receiving it. Generally, we asked people to pray for one item a week, but at especially busy times, this varied!

We held a prayer walk up Western Beacon on Tuesday 10 June. Sadly, only one person was able to join me in person. We walked and prayed anyway, and trust that the Lord was at work. We produced prayer pointers for those unable to make it and these were distributed as requested.

Trustees:

During the year, two Trustees were co-opted. Rev. Stephen Beach completed the DBS process and was registered with the Charity Commission as a Trustee in December 2024. Similarly, Kerry Gittins joined the team officially in March 2025. We welcomed these 2 appointments.

Strategy

I started working on a new strategy document including undertaking SWOT analyses with our Trustees. The strategy will continue to be worked on next academic year. It focusses on 5 areas: communication, prayer, finance, staff & volunteers, and, of course, young people.

Facebook:

We had 349 people follow our Facebook page. Mike is an administrator of our page. This means he, as well as staff, will see all messages. This is for safeguarding purposes.

Conclusion

It has been a wonderful year of varied work for the charity. Young people have made full use of all the clubs that are on offer. There have been chances for them to explore faith, creativity and in some cases leadership. Helping them to grow in confidence in these areas will provide great public benefit – as they step out into adulthood with more skills and resilience under their belt.

We look forward to 2025-26 with great enthusiasm, hoping to build on all that has gone before.

Stephen Beach (Revd.) became a trustee in December 2024. Stephen is a retired Anglican Vicar. He was active in running New Wine meet ups in Plymouth for many years. Stephen worships at Hope Baptist Church, Plymouth.

Mike Cade became a trustee in January 2022. Mike is serving as the Safeguarding Officer for Ivybridge Youth for Christ as well as taking over as Chair in Summer 24. Mike worships at Bittaford Methodist Church, is a local preacher and has previously served as a Street Pastor. He has recently retired from his position as Head of RE at Eggbuckland Community College.

Kerry Gittins became a trustee in March 2025. Kerry is a local dentist. As well as being a trustee she volunteers at the ReWired Discipleship group and Youth Alpha. She worships at St Georges Church in Modbury.

Rachel Harris joined the trustees in May 2024 at the AGM. She is Head of Centre at Brocks Farm part of Breakthrough Transformation Trust and worships at Rediscover Church Exeter. Rachel was appointed Secretary at the meeting of 28 May 2024.

Gareth Higgs (Rev. Dr.) joined the trustees at the AGM in May 2024. Gareth moved on from his position as Superintendent Minister at Plymouth Methodist Central Hall to commence work as a Lecturer in Applied Theology at Moorlands Bible College. Gareth stepped down from being a trustee in October 2025.

Paul Hinckley (Revd.) joined the trustees at the AGM in May 2024. Until recently Paul served as the vicar of St Johns, Ivybridge, St Michael and All Angels, Cornwood, St Petroc, Harford and All Saints, Sparkwell.

Marian Langsford (Dr) is a retired GP who worked in Ivybridge for over 20 years. Marian is involved with the Emotional Logic Centre in Ivybridge and Ivybridge Community Food. Marian worships at St Johns Church, Ivybridge.

Jonny Libby works as a pastor for Plymouth Methodist Central Hall has a lot of experience working with youth and young adults. He is passionate about his faith, family, food and football.

Jeff Stephenson (Dr) is a retired Medical Director at St Luke's Hospice Plymouth, where he worked as a doctor for over 15 years.
