## **WELL, WHAT A YEAR IT’S BEEN ON “PLANET SAFE”!** It’s strange that you don’t realise how much has been accomplished throughout a year until you actually sit back and take time to review it. We’ve had some huge milestones and achievements this year. As well as keeping on doing what we do, we have opened a second Ethical Boutique in the centre of Cardiff, continued to expand and develop our Conscious Coffee brand (eternal thanks to the wonderful Betty the Bus!) and we have finally finished the ten year journey of building an incredible community centre in India! The community centre is a major achievement for us. It’s not only the size, scale and ambition of the project, but it’s a testament to the will, tenacity and determination of all of those involved. Incredible! But the thing that makes me most proud is the arrival of new employees who share the same passion and enthusiasm that runs through the entirety of SAFE. They have all instantly become part of the SAFE family, and for that I am truly grateful. Staff, old and new, Trustees and volunteers (we couldn’t do it without you!) you are all incredible people, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. We gave had some great outcomes here with some long term volunteers finding work and moving onto their next steps. Keyholders have been trained to enable us to attend more events including WOMAD, Blue Lagoon, Sage Against The Machine and various fashion shows and markets. The Ethical Boutiqure continues to be a gateway into the community and is growing its repuation for being a voice for sustainability in Cardiff,. ## **10 CATHEDRAL WALK, ST DAVIDS SHOPPING CENTRE** Our city centre lcation opened this year, we had a fantastic effort from our volunteers, staff and trustees renovating the new space. Syspy and Phil have joined the staff team as shop supervisors and will manage and train volunteers. The team at St Davids have generously supported us with free fixtures and fittings. The space is being leased to us for 1 year rent and rate-free which is incredible! It is a fantastic opportunity for us to have a city centre location. Conscious coffee training has been held at the store and in future we hope to sell coffee regularly. ## Around The World **23/24** ## **OUR WORK IN MASINAGUDI, INDIA** We continue to fund the salaries for 5 teachers and educational support staff across three schools in Masinagudi in partnership with MYWA. Caz and Angie visited the project in December, reviewing the partnership agreement and meeting with key staff and volunteers. We have requested a review of the teacher’s pay to ensure we are providing fair wages and we are awaiting an official request from MYWA for additional teachers to be hired which we will review. ## **OUR WORK IN MUGAIYUR, INDIA** After more than 10 years of work, a huge milestone was reached this year with the completion of the WCDT Training Centre! Taith Funding was secured this year and planning is underway to run our first volunteer trip to the new site, Angie and Hannah Fitt attended the centre’s inauguration ceremony in September 2023 and recviewed the project partnership and business plan for the centre whilst risk assessing the upcoming trip. ## **OUR WORK IN LUMPA, SIERRA LEONE** Mr Mohammed Kandeh is now running Kankalay Islamic Primary School, we are awaiting new funding requests and hope to have an opportunity to visit the school soon 23124 ': :, safe Visits ## Around The World **23/24** ## **OUR WORK IN TORORO, UGANDA** Our partners ACET have been awaiting their NGO registration renewal this academic year, so they have not received their usual education package from SAFE. We are expecting this to be completed early 2024 and will continue to support their work going forward. ## **WORLDWIDE PROJECT - RSA ECO-COOKERY PROJECT** We have continued to deliver our RSA funded project developing cook-bags with IAR STUDIOS. We delivered training in Pembrokeshire, Swansea and Cardiff and took prototypes out to our partners in India. We will be taking a team to Villupuram to make cook bags and sun cookers with the community in 2024. ## **RAILWAY GARDENS - SPLOTT** A : With our head office now in Railway Gardens, Splott we Ee have been able to collaborate on various outreach events including starting an ECO MARKET. This monthly market offers an opportunity for ethical businesses to schowcase their products and celebrate their commitments to sustainability. The development of the market has provided valuable experience for our volunteers who help to book traders, steward at the event and vounteer in our coffee bus and clothes stores! Being based at this site as helped us build numerous community connections and has attracted new volunteers and participants to our programmes. ## **23/24** ## Work in Wales ## **GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP IN ACTION** 4 Year funding SUCCESS with thanks again to The National Lotty Community Fund! This 4 year project will provide interactive workshops for young people to explore global citizenship topics in a new exciting way. We welcomed Tacha, Rebecca and Rhys to the SAFE staff team and opened a new office in Swansea to expand out footprint. This new project combines skills for self reliance, wellbeing and confidence, and global education and has been developed through community consultation. This new project will increase SAFEs impact in the community with funding which allows us to collaborate more with existing projects and organisations, broadening the experiences available to our beneficiaries. - ## **SAFE O’GYMPAS CYMRU** In March 2024 we were awarded fuding by WCVA’s Volunteering Wales Main Grant. SAFE O’GYMPAS CYMRU, SAFE AROUND WALES will support and develop volunteers from disadvantaged backgrounds to enter the world of events management. SAFE will recruit and train 25 volunteers and provide opportunities for them at events around Wales, these will include Festivals and markets, taking our Ethical Boutique and Conscious Coffee programmes on tour. We cant wait to see what we can achieve this year! ## **CONSCIOUS COFFEE TRAINING** We have been shortlisted to recieve funding from LANDSEC Communities Fund to expand our Conscious Coffee barista school. Participants learn about Global issues through the lens of coffee whilst developing their confidence and pactical work skills. Coffee Workshops are provided as part of our Global Citizenship training and with the support of Landsec we hope to expand this into a stand alone programme, watch this space! 23124 ", Wales IF YOU LOVE SOMEON THEM CARDIFF BUSINESS AWARDS 'Ip. IJJ ## Financial Overview **23/24** ## **FINANCIAL REVIEW** Income increased by £74,311 and expenditure increased by £750 compared with last year. Income exceeded expenditure by £52,032. This means that the reserves at the year-end have increased from £82,454 at 31 March 2023 to £134,486 at 31 March 2024. ## **RESERVES POLICY** The Reserves Policy is to maintain a sufficient level of reserves, excluding any restricted reserves, to enable normal operating activities to continue over a period of 3 months should a shortfall in income occur and to take into account potential risks and contingencies. The trustees have calculated that for 2023/24, this should be around £47,000. The balance on the unrestricted reserves minus funds allocated for project delivery at the year-end currently stands at £94,592. ## **CONCLUSION** We have been very fortunate to have received support from many different sources, from our funders, individual givers, supporter members to people supporting the ethical boutique with clothing donations and shopping face to face or online. We have managed to end the 2024 financial year with a healthy amount of reserves to see us into the forthcoming financial year with energy, passion and the means to support people around the world and in the UK. ## **A SPECIAL THANKS** ## **to our supporters, partners, funders, trustees, staff and volunteers.** ## **Together we continue to make our world a fairer, SAFER place to live.** This incredible year of achievements would never have been possible without the ongoing support of our funders, volunteers, partners, staff and community. From winning a Green Business award and the completion of the WCDT community hall to securing BIG Lottery, WCVA and Taith funding 2023/24 has seen SAFE go from strength to strength. With our growing team and second office we are reaching more communities, broadening horizons and providing practical skills to more people who really need it.
