IT’S BEEN ANOTHER FANTASTIC YEAR HERE AT THE SAFE FOUNDATION
This year, it finally felt as if we’ve put COVID-19, and lockdown behind us. Our incredibly enthusiastic and committed staff team continue to push SAFE forward, with exciting new developments and projects, continuing the work that SAFE was set up to do. As we continue to expand our staff team, volunteers and projects, it’s a testament to all involved that we can still genuinely think of ourselves as the “SAFE family”.
A huge thank you to each and every one of you: staff, volunteers and trustees. We are because you are!

Ethical Boutique 22/23
31 WHITCHURCH ROAD, CARDIFF
Our sustainable clothes store “Ethical Boutique”, continues to be an excellent gateway into the community for SAFE. Our manager, Hannah, has built a loyal base of customers and volunteers who work to promote second-hand shopping in Wales.
The store provides a positive, welcoming space to build skills and confidence for work in the world of retail.
We have developed a supervisory role for our volunteers, giving them a greater sense of responsibility and empowerment.
OUR SHOP CONTINUES TO BE ONE OF OUR MOST POPULAR VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITIES !
In addition to our shop on Whitchurch Road, we have taken the boutique to several events and festivals and have been invited to collaborate with several sustainability-focused organisations in Cardiff.
The success of the store attracted managers of St Davids Shopping Centre, managed by LANDSEC to approach SAFE about taking on a retail unit in Cardiff City Centre - Rent Free! Landsec has also taken an interest in our Conscious Coffee project and has invited us to apply to their Futures Fund - watch this space!
Around The World 22/23
OUR WORK IN MASINAGUDI, INDIA
We continue to fund the salaries for 5 teachers and educational support staff across three schools in Masinagudi in partnership with MYWA.
The teachers provide vital capacity to schools that are severely understaffed due to underfunding. These schools which are attended by children from the hill tribes sometimes have as few as 2 teachers per school. Our funding improves the quality of the education that schools can offer and decreases dropout rates. One of the support staff visits the villages encouraging the children to keep up their attendance.
OUR WORK IN MUGAIYUR, INDIA
We are making steady progress with the build of the WCDT community centre, this year we completed the overhead stairway, weatherproofing, carpentry and windows, plastering, and installation of a septic tank and plumbing for toilet and washing facilities. Wider ground works have been completed to level the area and a compound wall has been built to ensure the building will be secure. We have released the last instalment of funding and expect the building to be finished and open in 2023! A huge milestone for SAFE and WCDT!
OUR WORK IN LUMPA, SIERRA LEONE
This year we have not received any funding requests from our partners at Kankalay Islamic Primary School. We have regular contact with the current head teacher Mr Bangura and are awaiting information about the next set of improvements needed at the school. Mr Bangura is set to retire in 2023 and will be superseded by deputy head, Mr Mohammed Kandeh.
this year we received a Partnership Award from Hub Cymru Africa celebrating the work that we have done together so far connecting communities in Swansea and Cardiff to the people of Lumpa.

OUR WORK IN TORORO, UGANDA
This year we continued to sponsor 12 children with educational packages and funding for medical treatment, many of these children would not be attending school without this support due to extreme financial hardship or having additional medical needs. Our partners ACET (Formily TOCIDA) oversee and administer this support to the children and families.
OUR WORK IN CAMBODIA
Our work in Cambodia with NFPO has now come to a close, Over the last 10 years we have sent volunteer groups to run workshops and add teaching capacity to the school, and we have also supported them with ground rent payments.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank them for letting us be a part of their incredible work with the community of Siem Reap and wish them all the very best for the future.
WORLDWIDE PROJECT - RSA ECO-COOKERY PROJECT
With funding from the Royal Society of the Arts, we have started our first programme that is being rolled out across the whole organisation. We are facilitating workshops that explore sustainable cooking technologies and build skills in sewing and carpentry. We are offering this training to communities in India, Uganda, Sierra Leone and Wales.
Work in Wales 22/23
GLOBALCITIZENSHIP WITH A DIGITAL TWIST & VOLUNTEER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME
We delivered the final 11 months of our Big Lottery-funded project, delivering workshops around global issues and providing tailored supported volunteering opportunities for disadvantaged young people in South Wales.
We surveyed our partners and participants and used their feedback to help shape the new four-year application that we have submitted to The Lottery, fingers are crossed that we get it!
AWARDS FOR ALL FUNDING
Another exciting updater this year was the addition of our new events and training bus “Betty” - Generously funded by The National Lottery Awards For All Pot, Betty will be converted to be a mobile classroom and barista school, eventually we hope to install a solar system which will allow her to be operational off-grid.
SKILLS FOR WORK IN A GLOBAL WALES
Thanks to funding from C3SC we were able to deliver globally focused skills training for people looking for work in Cardiff. We started a culture and language exchange cafe at our site in Railway Gardens
This fund bridged a gap in our funding between January and March and was a great opportunity to gain valuable input from our beneficiaries about the types of training and support they would benefit from in the future,
CONSCIOUS COFFEE TRAINING
Partnering with Hoogah Swansea expanded our hospitality training exploring global issues through the lens of coffee.
RESPONSIBLE RETAIL TRAINING
A new training day was developed to equip participants with skills for a job in retail, exploring ethical upselling, supply chain, dressing for success and second-hand sustainability.
22/23
A NEW WEBSITE!
In February 2023 we launched our new website, with thanks to Proper Design we designed a new look that better explains our work and impact and helps users to understand how SAFE is working towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals. We hope this new look, along with some designs that complement our core logo, we can create a dynamic look that remains recognisable to our supporters and community. As always we have involved our volunteers and community in the design and we think it looks fantastic! Thanks to all who were involved!
PARTNERING FOR WELLBEING
This year we enhanced the wellbeing support we offer to our staff and volunteers, one of the major enhancements we made was through our employee support partnership with Hapus Training. Hapus provide a mental health and wellbeing coaching, helping us to better support ourselves and our beneficiaries. One to one sessions are avaiable for Staff and help us to continue supporting others. In feburary we had a team wellbeing training day together to kick off the partnership.
Here at SAFE we recognise the need to embed good wellbeing practices into our work culture and we are excited to have Hapus on board to help us.
Financial Overview 22/23
FINANCIAL REVIEW
Income increased by £12,893 and expenditure increased by £57,246 compared with last year. Expenditure exceeded income by £21,530. This means that the reserves at the yearend have decreased from £103,983 at 31 March 2022 to £82,453 at 31 March 2023.
RESERVES POLICY
The Reserves Policy is to maintain a sufficient level of reserves, excluding any restricted reserves, to enable normal
operating activities to continue over a period of 3 months should a shortfall in income occur and to take into account potential risks and contingencies. The trustees have calculated that for 2023/24, this should be around £23,000. The balance on the unrestricted reserves minus funds allocated for project delivery at the year-end currently stands at £76,568.
CONCLUSION
We have been very fortunate to have received support from many different sources, from our funders, individual givers, supporter members to people supporting the ethical boutique with clothing donations and shopping face to face or online. We have managed to end the 2023 financial year with a healthy amount of reserves to see us into the forthcoming financial year with energy, passion and the means to support people around the world and in the UK.
A SPECIAL THANKS
to our supporters, partners, funders, trustees, staff and volunteers.
Together we continue to make our world a fairer, SAFER place to live.
2022-23 was the final full year of our Big Lotteryfunded project “Global Citizenship with a Digital Twist” and was full of delivery, fantastic events, monitoring and evaluation of the program as a whole.
We made huge progress with our community centre building project with our partners at WCDT, Mugaiyur and continued our packages of educational support around the world. In Wales we expanded our work with refugees and asylum seekers, finding that our volunteer programme provided people with a sense of purpose and connection in a turbulent time in their lives.
We expanded our training portfolio for people in Wales and made new partnerships that will help us reach more people with the aim of helping them feel connected, valued and capable of making a positive difference in the world.
Our sincere thanks go out to all of you who make what we do possible,
