Trustees Report (continued)
for the year ended 31 August 2024
Greatwood satisfies the two key principles given by the Charity Commission as follows:
Principle 1 - the identtfiable benefft or beneffts are all related to the aims of the charity
promoting the environment and animal welfare
assisting the younglaged Of disabled
advancement of education
Principle 2 - the beneficiaries are appropriate to the aims principle and the opportunity to benefit is not
unreasonably restricted etlhei geographically or financially.
Horseracing remains the second largest spectator sport in Great Britain: Greatwood s8ts'sfies any p055ible
public concem regarding ihe welfare of former racehorses.
Greatwood was the first charity to utilise forner racehorses in edu(*tional programmes for children and
young people. Greatwood aims to Iransform the INes of wlnerable and disadvantaged children and young
people aged 5-24. from challenging environments through inspiratw)n and aspiration, by providing a unique
leaming and sensory expetien(t that would be impossible for them without visiting Greatwood.
Greatsyood is accredited by The Wiltshire Council as an Alternattve Provider of Personalised Learning and
a Provider of Positbve Activities for Young People.
Members of the public are invite(I to GrealwooKI and can participate in any educational programmes and
are actively welcomed to volunteer at Greatwood.
Following the success of the pilot initialive in taking a fomier racehorse to Vbsit a care home in Marlborough.
Greatwood demonstrated tts commitment to serve the local community and widen its outreach by arranging
weekty visits to iwo care homes during the summer months.
Greaiwood acts as a catslyst for indivHJuaL8 from any walk of lrfe to achieve success and employment
wtthin the industry. thereby improwng mental wellbeing. selfesteem and a 5erise of worth with the direct
aim of fflaking a real difference to their future lives and careers as well as facilitating their social mobility-
Risk Management
The trustees confirm that the major risks lo whth the charity is exposed, as identified by the trustees. have
been reviewed and systems and procedtjres established to manage those rtsks.
Prntection of the children under our care from hami is the highest operat￿nal priority of Greatwo¢)d and
Is therefore the source of the greatest potential rÉsk. The charity has Safeguarding and Child Protection
policies in place which are reviewed at least annually. Ml school staff are subject to mandatory training
around safeguarding and child protection. The safeguarding practice5 are regularly reviewed by both
dependent and independent persons and bodies. These reviews are in full accordance with relevant
legislation and best prath"ce. Full training and support are given to all televant staff.
The assessmenl of risk in decrease of fijnding from The RaciThJ Industry outlined in the year end 2022
accounts was correct. Desptte being invtted to bid for funding from Ihe newly appointed (British Horseracing
Authorrty) Horse Welfare Board. the Trustees and Directors declined. Greatwood had been invited to take
in horses directly out of training. The horses entering the charFty would have a commercial value and
wouldn't necessarily require charitable intervention. Thi5 woukl not compty with The Charity Commission
guidance on Public Benefit.
The increased c05t of living has affecte(l and will continue to affect ub-lities. fertiliser. fuel. and hard food
thus rendering unpredictability in cash flow fc￿aSts and budgets.
Increased cost of staffing owiThJ to the rising rates of both National Insurance and Tax together with The
Notional Lrving wage increase will affect the number of staff that can be employed. this in tum will affect
the number of horses thal can come under Greatwood'5 umbrella.

Greatwood Charity Limited
Trnstees Report (continued)
for the year ended 31 August 2024
The upsurge in the cost of living could result in etther rehomed horses having to retum to us. or a noticeable
increase in the nufflber of horses in the 'at risk. category needing charitable intervention.
Maintaining Greatwo(yJ's hallmark of leadership. sustainabilty. innovation and evidence of outcomes in the
light of the above risks makes it a challenge for Greatwo(xl to continue exhibiting these trails and the
implications of these factors upon fundraising.
The SEND market is highly competitive due to the devolutiorl and reduction of school budgels, competition
from schools. in house teams and other SEND providers. The puts downward pressure on fees and leads
to fewer referrals.
Increased number of other organisalions adopting Animal Assisted Inte￿ention thereby diluting funding
streams.
Reserves Policy
The charity holds both restricted and unrestricted reserves to meet its charitable objectives. Restricted
reserves exist for both the educational programmes and for capital items within Greatwood.
The Trustees have agreed a policy Ihat the unrestricted funds held by the Charity not committed or invested
in tangible fixed a55ets {'free reserves.) should be equivalent to twelve months. or 100Yo. of the resource5
expended. In 2024 this latter figure equated £670.22512023 £640.492). The level of free reserves stood
at £451,142 {2023 £413.132).

Greatwood is mindful of the beneffts that volunteers Ggn bring to the charity, and actively encourages their
participation. Volunleering allows a connection wthin the communty by bringing people together and giving
them a sense of belonging. This engagement reduces stress. improves mood and boosts selfesteem whilst
building sockgl support networks and promoting new advocates.
Companies are increasingly able to understand and act on their obligatK)ns to stakeholders and the broader

from Nationwide. Octopus and Zoetis Open Reach. Newbury Racecourse. and there has been a

Responsibilitie5 of Trustees
As explained more fulty in the Tru5tees' responsibiltlies statement. set out on page 17, the Tfustees are
responsible for the preparation of financial statements which give a true and fair view. and for such
intemal control as the Trustees deterniine is necessary to enable the preparation of financial statements
that are free from material misstatement. whether due to fraud or error.
In preparing the financial statements. The Trnstees are responsible for assessing the Charitable
Company's ability lo continue as a g(Mng con￿rn. disc105ing, as applicable, matters related to going
concem and using the going concem basis of accounting unless the Trustees either inlend lo liquidate

Auditorfs responsibilities for the audit of the financial statements
As explained more fully in the Trustees. feswnsibilitses statement set out on page 10. the Trustees
(who are also the directors of the Charilable Company for the purposes of company law) are
responsible for the preparation of the financial statements and for being satisffied that they give a true
and fair view. and for such intemal control as Ihe Trustees determine is necessary to enable the
preparation of financial statements that are free from malerial misstatement. whether due to fraud or
error.
In preparing the financial statements, the Trustees are responsible for assessing the Charitable
Company's ability to continue as a going concem, disck)sing. as applicable. matters relaled to going
concem and using the going concem basis of accountiry unless the Trustees either intend to liquidate
the Charitable Company or to cease operation5, or have no realistic altemative but to do so.
Auditor's responsibilities for the audit of the financial statements
Our objectives are to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements as a whole
are free from material mis5tatemenL whether due to fraud or effor. and to issue an auditorfs report that
includes our opinion. Reasonable assuran￿ is a high level of assurance but is not a guarantee that an
audit conducted in accordance with ISAS (UK) will aNvays detect a material mi5slatement when it exists.
Misstatements can arise from fraud or e￿Or and are conshlered material rf. individually or in the

the basis of these financial sLqtements.
Irregulartties. including fraud. are instances of non-compliance with laws and regulations. We design
procedures in line with our responsibilrties. outlined above. to detect material misstatemenls in respecl

these are capable of delecting irregularities, including fraud ts detailed below=
Enquiry of management. those charged with govemance and the entity's solicitors around actual
and polential litigation claims-
Enquiry of entity staff in tax and compliance functions to identify any instances of non-compliance
wtth laws and regulations:

Greatwood Charity Limited
Report of the Independent Auditors to the Trustees
for the Year Ended 31 August 2024
Reviewing minutes of rneetings of those charged wilh govemance:
Reviewing financial ststement disc105ures and testing to supporting documentation to assess
compliance with applicable laws and regulats"ons:
Performing audit work over the risk of management Ove￿ide of controls. induding testing ofjoumal
entries and other adjustments for appropriateness. evaluating Ihe business rationale of significant
transactions outside the normal course of business and reviewing accounting e5timales for bias.
BecAuse of the inherent limitations of an audtt, there is a risk Ihat we will not detect all irregularities,
including those leading lo a material rnisslatement in the financial 5tstemenls or non-compliance with
regulation. This risk increases the more thal cornpliance wtth a law or regulation is removed from the
events and transactions reflecled in the financtal statements. as we will be less likely to become awar8
of instances of non-compliance. The risk is also greater regarding irregulartties occurring due to fraud
rather than error. as fraud involve5 intentional concealment. forgery. collusion. omission or
misrepreser)tation.
As part of an audit in accordance ISAS {UlQ, we exercise professional judgment and maintain
professional sceptiusm throughout the audit. We also:
Identify and assess the rtsks of material mtsstatement of the financial statements. whether due lo
fraud or error. design and perfomi audit procedures responsive to those risks. and obtain audit
evtdence that is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our opinion. The risk of not
detecting a material misstatement resulting from fraud is higher Ihan for one resulting from error,
as fraud may inV￿Ve collusion. forgery. intentional omissions. misrepresentations, or the override
of intemal control.
Obtain an understarKling of intemal control relevant to the audit in OFder to design audit procedures
that are appropriate in the circumslarKe5, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the
effectiveness of the Charttable Company's intemal control.
Evaluate the appropriateness of accounting poliae5 Used and the reasonableness of accounting
estimates and related disdosures made by the Trustees.
Conclude on the appropriateness of the Directors. use of the going concem basis of accounting
and. based on the audit evidence obtained. whether a matersal Ljncertainty exists related to events
or conditions that may cast signthcant doubt on the Chari12ble Company s ability to conb'nue as a
going concem. If we conclude Ihat a material uncertainty e￿Sts. we are required to draw attention
in our auditorfs report to the related disclosures in the financial siatements or. rf Such disclosures
are inadequate. to modtfy our opinion. Our condusions are based on the audtt evidence obtained
up to the date of our audttorfs report. However. future events or conditions may cause the
Charitable Company to ￿ase to continue as a going (x)ncem.
Evaluate the overall presentation. Structu￿ and cx)ntent of the finarFcial statements. including the
disclosures. and whether the financial statements represent undertying transactions and events
in a manner that achieves fair presentation.
We communicate with those charged with govemance regarding. among other matters, the planned
scope and timing of the aLJdit and significant audit findings. induding any significant deficiencies in
internal control that we identify during our audtt.
