**Objects:** TO PROMOTE THE ADVANCEMENT OF EDUCATION BY DEVELOPING THE INTEREST OF THE PUBLIC IN ALL ASPECTS OF LOCAL HISTORY, AND ALSO ENCOURAGE AND FOSTER INTEREST IN LOCAL HISTORY IN YOUNG PEOPLE OF THE AREA BY:A) UNDERTAKING ORIGINAL RESEARCH INTO ASPECTS OF SHAP'S HISTORYB) MAKING AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC THE RESULTS OF SUCH RESEARCHC) UNDERTAKING THE COMPILATION AND ORGANISATION OF LOCAL HISTORY MATERIAL WHICH SHALL FORM THE ARCHIVES OF THE SOCIETYD) ORGANISING EXHIBITIONS AND DISPLAYS OF LOCAL HISTORY MATERIALE) PROVIDING COMMENT, AND GIVING ADVICE, WHEN REQUIRED, ON MATTERS RELATING TO THE HISTORY AND HERITAGE OF SHAPF) INVITING GUEST SPEAKERS TO ADDRESS MEMBERS OF THE SOCIETY ON SUBJECTS OF AN HISTORICAL NATUREG) ORGANISING VISITS TO PLACES OF LOCAL AND GENERAL HISTORICAL INTEREST

**Activities:** Talks of local historical interest winter months,  outings to places of historical interest June, July, August.  Summer exhibition in the Heritage Centre,also open for family history research and houses an archive of photographs, census records and other records relevant to Shap.   First book, Mardale - Echoes and Reflections of a lost Lakeland community published September 2011.
