2023-24 Activities

During this fLnancial year, UKFIET has held several events. These have included:
a. The 2023 bi8nnial confewenee held in Oxford Septeinber 2023. The theii)e of this conlrr¢nce was Educalronfoy
Social EKviroMmental Jt4Stice.' di.versity, sustainability, respo￿¢{bilIty. This proved higlily popular,
attracting 518 abstract subrnissioiis of which 265 were accepted.
The confei'enG¢ was held online {7 September) &nd in peiBon (12-14 September). The online day with J 8 papers
was added as a response to delegates, concerns over tFLe issues of inclusion and decolonisation with regards
to the conferences being held in Oxford. UKF.IBT (with FCDO suppoit) and BAICE provided 31 bursaries to
allow Lnore delegates I'o join the conf¢rence.
Overall 793 participants attended tlie conference with 105 registering for the online day only. Participants caine
from 60 countries, 490/0 were Utc based and 66 /0 were women,
b. UKf*lET Language Day.. Marcli 19 2024, iii partneiBhip witli the British Council. This event sought to facilitate
dialogue belw¢¢n academics and practitioneis 011 the role of language in the cu￿1Qu[uM, pedagogy and e¢ss¢ssment
&t different levcls of the education systeni. Acknowledging that children cannot effectively learii in an unfamiliar
language, the evcnt sought to cliallenge and change current laiiguage practices.
Earty Career evenl,. 26 April 2024. This well attended hybrid event offered early career professiona15 and
researchers a distinctive space to engage with each otlicr and their more experienced Colleagues, The central
presentation at the event was from Golleagues &t NFER.
d. Teacher Task Fopce Reporl Lc7unck.. 21 June 2024. The event focussed on the inaugui'al TeactLer Tas1< Force and
UNESCO Global Report oil Teachers, Addrgssing teacher shortoges aptd transfopming thepYofcssiok7, Carlos
Vargas Tamez, Hoad of the SeCret￿l￿t of the Infrnialional Task ory Teachers for Education 2030 and Chief
of UNESCO'S Section for T¢ach¢i' Dev¢lopmenL sh￿'ed the findings of Ihe repoi'l. The presentation was
followed by a panel discussioii and then Ihree brealcout sessLons on Dat￿ Tern￿ and Conditions &iid Teacher
CPD.

2. FCDO Grant
FCDO awarded UKFIET an accountable g'&nt of £28,000 to support UIOIE'I, ill the delivery of its annual programme durincy
the period September 2023 AprÉl 2024. I'he graLIt supported FCDO advisers to atieiid the UICFIET 2023 Conference,
additional bui'sai'ies foi. the contei'ence, suppoil Lo uicfIEI' events and ongoing core costs sucli as website maintenance.
3. Policy development and implcmentitioll
During the year a small gioup of Trustees developed a numbei. of policies to clarify and rend¢r transparent aspects of Ul(FIET
worlang. Tknes¢ were approved by tbe April Trustee meeting, shared with the Executive Conunittee dnd Ineinbers. They &re
all &vailable on the UICFIET websile.

In line with the Social Media and Publications policy, the Eiigageinent Fellow develop¢d a set of guidelLnes for potential blog
authors. These are available on the UKFIET website.
4. Conference review
Following the 2023 conference some members of the UKFIET community COtnm¢nted tliat they peTceived the UI<FIET
conference fee to be relatively higli and asked if the current confekence locatioii was a factoi. in the fee level. There wei'¢ also
concerns about the appropriateness of the venue for & conference concern¢d with education and d¢velopment. In addition
Trustees asked about the carbon footprint of the rutTeiit conference forn]at.
In the light of tliese concerns a voluiiteer group of UICFIET Trustees and Executive Committee members Tnet to Conskder these
issues. After reviewing the 2023 Conferettce report and various other dat& Sources they Goncluded there was no appetite to
shift the current balance between online and in-person days and endorsed the choice of the Exam Schools in Oxford for the
2025 CoLiference. The group inade a number of recoinLnendations to the 2025 Conferenc¢ Coinn]ittee ai'ound tlie abstract
subinission and seLection process, and suggested Lnore support should be given to meinbers of tlie UtCFIET coinmunity who
are less faLniliar with abstract writ'ing. The group recommended to the Trustees increasing the number of bursaries for the
2025 Conference,

Lycle is biennial with sigllificant income every ot.her year and expenditLwe every year. Bacli biennial confer¢n¢e has up-front
costs and risks that need to be anticipated and managed. UI(FIET therefoiE maintains reserves sufficient to cover costs for two
Y£a￿ non-coThfer¢nce expenditure in advance, in the unlikely event tliat income falls well short of liabLlities and maintains
buffer for unanticipated costs. This figLllE currently stands dt £125,000 ds appi-oved in October 2022 and reconfErn]ed
by ihe Board in Octobei. 2023,
Investment Polic
Under the Memorandum and Ariicles of Association, the Charity has the power to make any investn]ent wknicb tbe Trltstees
see fit. Investments are managed by the Tr¢asurer and Chair in line with the guidancc of the Board. All investments
options maxllnise return on the reserves but also ensure that funds air &vaiIabl¢ at re&sot]ablc iiotice in light of an unforeseen
event.

UKFIET continues to rull a Iwo-year September to Septembei. pl&nning cycle.
The Executive Comrnittee staThds at 16 itt total - 14 members with a cross section of expertise plus the Engagemeiit Fellow and
the fi'eeland Progra]ntne Manager. The Trustee Board stands at I l.

Gaza. The event is being held in partnership with the UniversLty of Bristol, the REAL Centre at University of Cambridgc and
FOBZU (F4riends of Bei'zeit University).

Glob￿ South.
Contents for the website and social media will be maintained by the Engagement Fellow to ensure the Members and those

(a) Basis of preparatioii of financial statements

The trustees consider that there are no material uncertainties about tbe Ch￿'[ty'S abilLty to continue as a
going concern.

(b) Fund accounting
Restricted funds are subject to Ihe limitations on Iheir use specified by the donor5 or oilier providers,
Unrestricted funds are available for use at the discretion off the Trustees in furtherance of the general
objeclives of the charity.
(c) Income
All income 18 included in the stalement of fmancial activities wh¢n the charity is entitled to the

(d) Expenditure

beneficiaries. It llicludes both costs that can be allocated directly to such activities those costs of

the constitutional and financial statutory requireinents of the Ch￿'llY and include the independent
examination fees,
(e) Debtors
Trade debtors and other debtors are recognised al their settlcment amount dLie after any dÈscounts.
