Section C
Ob'ectives and activities
The charitable purpose is to advance education, and in particular the
education of people not in full time gainful employment who are in Éheir
Third Age (being the period of time after the first childhood dependence
and the second age of full-time employment andlor parental
responsibility) residing in Maghull and Lydiate and their surrounding
locality.
Summary of tie objects of the
charity set OL* in its
governing document
The Association continues to strive to promote the value of lifelong
learning. I n particular, it seeks to ach ieve its objective by facil itating the
operations of a number of self-help activity groups which meet to
encourage and develop amongst their members, a wide and varied range
of both knowledge and skills.
Summary of tie main
activities undartaken for the
public benefit in relation to
these objects (include within
this section the statutory
declaration that trustees have
had regard to the guidance
issued by the Charity
Commission on public
benefit)
The Association believes that the stimulation that is provided through
learning helps to foster the general wellbeing of its members.
In supervising the management of the Trust and its activities, the
Trustees remain mindful of the guidance that is given by the Charity
Commission with regard to public benefit.
Additional details of objectives and activities (Optional information)
Key to the success of the work of the Association is the willingness of
members to come forward and to lead and develop the individual activity
groups. The Association is wholly dependent upon these volunteers if it is
to continue to achieve its purpose. Mindful of this, the Trustees remain
indebted to group leaders for the selflessness shown in undertaking their
roles.

Section D
Achievements and performance
Summary of tie main
achievements of the charity
during the year
Continuing in its primary objective of promoting the value of lifelong learning,
the Association had 605 members as at 31" March 2024.
Whilst the renewal period brought a dip in membership Iwhich we feel was
normal for the time of yearl,. we currently have a membership of 672.
In June this year we adopted the model Constitution making some changes that
reflected the needs of our U3A. This will goto the members at our June AGM.
Our registration process this year took a leap into the future, when we
introduced onl ine renewals using PayPal. Although the uptake of this facility was
limited this year confidence and the system showed mean that next year our
renewal system will be far less labour intensive.
We have also introduced Internet banking and now use bank transfers as
opposed to checks to cover rents, et cetera. This has streamlined our treasury
system and brought us into the 21st-century at last,
Our Facebook page, introduced early 2023, has continued to be successful with
membership now having reached 138 members. It provides a valuable
opportunity for existing members to experience a wide range of the groups we
have on offer. Especially useful for new members is being able to read the
Comments made by members. Our Facebook page is run as a private/closed
group with membership restricted to current members of our u3a.
We have updated our website making improvements, especially in the
reintroduction of an u p-to-date calendar which reflects each day activities and a
diary of events to come. This has been very useful as a reference to the group
leaders were planning outings and holidays and should lead to an avoidance of
clashes.
We have continued reviewing our policy documents and have recently
introduced a social media policy, a web management policy and have begun
work on a 'new guide to members, document which will run alongside our
guide to group leaders, document.
We have continued introducing teams so that no one members is solelv
responsible for an area. This enables us to ensure the continuity of each area
should a committee member or a group leader decide to leave,

Section E
Financial review
Brief statement of the
charity's policy on reserves
The Trustees believe it is appropriate that a general reseNe should be
maintained that is the equivalent of the costs of managing the running of
the Association for a period of six months. It is in line with the guidance
from the Third Age Trust that no U3A is to carry reserves of more than six
months, running costs.
As our funds are now within the six months of running costs as
mentioned above, we have therefore kept our membership fees for the
next financial year 2024 - 2025 at £12 per year in order to maintain this
amount.
Our year-end balance at 31. of March 2024 £36,262.
The Trustees monitor continually the reserve funds of all the individual
groups to ensure that no excess beyond their demonstrable need is
being created, and that deficits do not arise.
