The trustees are pleased to present their annual report together with financial statements of the charlty for
the year ending 31 Deeember 2025. The trustees have adopted the provisions of the Statement of
Recommended Practice {SORPI 'Accounting and Reporting by Chanties. IFRS 1021 in preparing the
annual report and fin8ncial statements of the chanty.

they can bring to the charity with the board seeking to provKle the charity wrf(h a range of skills in govemance
and management as well as representatives from the Wessex Cardiac Centre and those with first hand
experience of heart disease.

Through the risk management processes, trustees aro satisfied that Ihe major risks identified have been

under review is the current economic climate, and as a result the trustees have presetved the reserves of
the charity by not overspending the funds available to them.

The purposes of the charity afft to relieve SLtffering from cardiovascuiqr diseases primarity by supporting the
work of the Wessex Cardiac Unit based at Universty Hospital SoLrthamplon and working within the
community of the Wessex Region (Hampshire, C)orset and Isle of Wghtl. as well as supporting other
¢ommunities right across the South of England. This is achieved by providing equipment, Services, and
facilities to help patients and their relatives through the process of treatrnenl in the Cardiac Unil, by frJnding
research and projects into the prevenkn'on. rehabilitation and cure of such diseases and by providing funds
and facilities to train and educate staff in the Unrt.
The trust achieves these objechves through 3 areas..
1. Education and tralnlng
Selectively providing fvnds to train and educate staff in the Wessex Cardiac Unrt ranging from
supporting attendees at COnfe￿nCeS to funding training courses for m￿lc87 staff to enhan￿ and
advance their professional knowledge and skills.
2. Preventlon and Res¢ar¢h and Development
Providing medical equipment and funding ￿SearCh and proiecis in the prevention of heart dtsease to
the Wessex CardkAC Unit. Both equipment and are generalty of a type that the NHS would not
provide {for example leading edge or innovaiory}-
3. Treatmgnt and pallent support
Owning and operating a facilty for the relalNes of patients undergoing serious cardiac interventions at
the Wessex Cardiac UniL Heartbeat House has 24 bedrooms and is locat&J directly opposf(e the
hospital, providing 'home from home" acummodatTron free of charge for LJP to 35 people at any one
time and is available to anyone who's relative is an in-patient in tho Wessex Cardiac Unit Besides the
purchase of the property. this provision is a substantial oTrgoing expense eommilment for the charity.

During the year, the trust had three major objectNes:
1. Educatlon and training
To continue lo promote and meet Ihe aims of Heartbeat Year on year the charity supports cardiac
care needs and priorities made known to it through a process of grants submissions, using
nrestricted funds achieved through donatioris. communty fvndraising and events. In addition. the
Trust continues lo promote the overriding purpose of the charity as widely as possible throughout the
Wessex Regton and beyond.
2. Patient support
To continue lo provKle a cardi￿ Youth Worker in support of psychological needs to enharKe patient
experiences living with long term health condttions and congenital heart dtsease.
3. Treatment- Heartbeat House
To continue to run and maintain Heartbeat House, which provides a 24 bedroom "home from home.
for up to 35 people whose loved ones are undergoing cardiac treatment within the Wessex Cardiac
Unit.

the trust continued to support any ad hoc needs for crili¢al education or equipm8nt in line with its purpose.

The Trust provides grants in line with its objects and priorrbes for funding that are identified from time lo time.
These fall into the following categories.. EdU￿tIOn and training. prevention, treatsmenl. and rehabilitation.
Volunteers
The Trust has, since its establishmenL been supported by many willing volunteers in fundraising and
administration activities of the charity, the trustees would like to take this opportunity lo say how much they
appre￿ale their contsnued and valuable support for our vitsl work in the community.
Publlc bonefit
Wessex Cardiac Trust exists solety to provide benefft to the public through on-going support lo the Cardiac
Unit helping it to achieve the best of cardiac care. This is enabled by corbtinuing to upgrade and improve the
facilities within the Unit, provide accomnK)datitin to relatNes of inpatients. vital education and training
opportunities ft)r stsff, and through striving to contrlbute io medical advancements through invaluable
research.
The trustees confirm Ihat Ihey have Gomplied with their duty in secliDn 17151 of the 2011 Charities Act lo have
due regard to guidance published by the Charty Commission in respect of public benefit.
Financlal Instruments
The charities activities expose it lo sevewl financial risks, induding credit risk, cash fkjw risk and liquidity
risk. Written principles on the use of financial demat(ves are used io manage these risks.
Credit risk is limited due to the principal financial assets teing bank balances and investrrents with high
credit ratings assigned by intemational credit rating agen¢Es.
Cash flow risk is primarily the risk of changes in interest rates, interest I￿aring assets and liabilities are held
at fixed rate lo ensure certainty of cash flow.
Liquidity risk is reduced due lo the charity using a mixlure of long temi and short-term debt finance to ensure
that sufficient funds are available for ongoing operations and ftjture developments.

A¢hlevements and porformance
Heartbeat enjoyed another very successfvl year achieving record income for the chatlty for the second
consecutive year. This outstanding result is a le5tsnEnt to the dedvtion and hard work of the whole team
in what continues lo be a very challenging and compebtive sector. The Heartbeat team continued to grow
th the addition of a part-time Dorset Fundraiser and a part time Rotary Heartbeat House Assistant. to help
manage the consistentty higher cccupancy ￿velS in the house during the year. In 2025, the charity has also
aGhieved the following..
1. Commrtted over £450,000 offvnding to several important projects to support ihe Wessex Cardiac Unf(
which inclLKIe'.
Continued support for and developnknt of >D heart modelling for CoMpl￿ated cong8nit81
heart defe¢ts in infants and young children. induding lakn'ng the initiative from clinical practice,
lo educating the next generation of cardiac surgeons. There is now a display cabinet with a
library of over 1(M) different heart nv)dels in the Heartbeat Ed￿at￿n Centre.
Continued development of a Prehabilitation Service Trial (fil for surgery phYs￿￿11Y and
mentally) for a certain group of cardiac patients v￿th aortk stenosis, wilh patient thals having
started al the end of 2025.
Continued funding, for a third year of a Cardiac Youlh Worker to supwrt psychological needs
in adolescent and yourvJ adult cardiac patients, aged befv￿n 11 and 25 years old, who have
undergone serious earty life cardiac surgery and trauma. Because of a workload with over 100
patients in the Wessex region, frjnding was made available for a second Cardiac Youth Worker
for tsvo years from spnng 2025, whKh ￿ nwking a huge ￿tfferen￿ to many young people both
individualty and as groups.
Continued funding of the 'PICNIC' study for patients who have a heart attack, lo identify
pab'enls who are at risk of another episcKle, but also to Klenbfy low risk patients who would not
need hjrther invasive treakn￿nt
Funding for the redevelopment of the Heart Failure Unit wlthin the Wessex Catdiac Unit, with
an ambition of being the le&ing one of its kind in the UK.
2. Continued to Rotary Heartbeat House WTth over 440 relabves of cardiac patients staying in the
house during the year. Those who stayed were from a WKJe geographical area, including as far west
as Cornwall, as far north as the Midlands. as far east as Kent and, as far 50Uth as the Channel Islands,
particularly Guemsey, wtt￿h made up 20% of all the resKlents. The breadth of these referral locations
highlights Southampton's critical role as a regM)nal cardiac centre of excellence and underscores the
significant value of Heartbeat Hou$e as a much-needed facility.
3. A lull year of fvndraising events, including three golf days, SUmu￿[ party, aU￿m￿ ball and our sports
and challenge events: wlh rnuch support from both the local and business communities. In addition,
we hosted our first mass pafticipation SK walking event. 'Heart & Stroll,, with over 600 parti¢ipants
helping to raise fvnds for the redevelopment of the Heart Failure Un
A further increase in the Charity's legacy inco￿* during the year: including an exceptional one4)ff
legaw payment of £281,810. Legacies remain an important Ir￿Qme stream for Heartbeat. While we
make efforts to understand the motivations of indNiduals who choose io re￿mber Heartbeat in their
wills, it is not always possib￿ to ascertain Ihe reasons behind such generous contributions.
5. Much work has been done in the past couple of years to buihj relat￿nShIpS in Guemsey, frorn where
many cardiac patients have been referred for treatrnent in Southampton, creating a need for their
relatives to stay in Heartbeat House. 2025 saw more than £60,000 raised via donab'ons and events
from Guetnsey is18nders. This is another important income stream for Ihe charity, and we wi11 continue
to have regular visibility on the isLand lo raise our profile even mo￿.
6. Work continues to be done in maintaining and growing the profile of Heartbeat within the local
Southampton business ¢ommunty. Strong connections have been buitt with several high-profile
organisalions including the Peter Cwper Motor Group.. Savills, Paris Smith and the Chewton Glen
Hotel, yielding valuable revenue for the charrty, but the Ix)ntribution from Barratt Homes of £140,000
was the most impressive.
7. There conlinLtres to be a much wider level of PR and visibility of the charity across the region supported
by our PR partner, Lee Peck Medra. aided by coveTage on BBC local TV news, BBC Radio Solent and
BBC South Today, and greater levels of exposure across all scckal media channels.

8. The charity also invested in external HR and Health & Safety support through a local company,
Verve HR. This enabled us to remain compliant and up to date with changes in relevant legislation.

As shown on the Statement of Finanaal Acb'vibes on page 10, income for the year amounted to £1,232,943

Golny concern
After reviewing the charty's forecasts and projections, the Board have a reasonable expectation that the
charity has adequate resources to continue in operational existence for the foreseeable future. The entity
therèfore continues to adopt the going concem basis in preparing its financial sialements.

The principal funding sources of the Charity are donations from the general publ￿. legaci8s, and through
various fundraising aCt￿￿'eS.
Invogtment pollcy
Heartbeat is committed to investing its funds in a responsible manner and for the investsnent portfolio to be
managed in accordance with our owm charitable mission and values. This means having regard to best
practice in Environrnenlal: Social and Governance IESGJ factors which integrates sustainability,
stewardship and ethical considerations directy into the investment de¢ision making process to manage risk
8nd generate kjng term sustainable retums. To align our portfolK) With our health goa5s there are formal
exclusions of companies engaged in the p￿lUction of tobacco and high conlenl alcoholic beverages and
companies targeting a signif￿ant prow1ion of their pothlio from fc£¥Js high in fat, sugar and salt {HRSS).
Res8Ne's policy
11 is the policy of the trustees lo secure the long-tem viability of the Trust by baLgncing the ongoing obligations
in relation to Ihe maintenance and upkeep of Heartbeal House, the varTroLts research activities or projects
and the general support required by the Wessex Cardiac Unit. In addition. sufficient liquid reseryes ne8d to
be maintained to meet all anticipated short-lem needs, after allowing for income from fundraising activities
likely to be received within the required timescale and, insofar a5 available fijnds are insufficienl fully lo meet
the foregoing objectives. to give priority to the short-temi needs except Whe￿ that wouhj require funds
onaled specifically for endowment purposes to tE utiltsed contrary to the donorfs wishes.
Free reserves afe those funds that can raised from assets Ihal are readily realisable, less those funds
whose uses are restricted. At 31 December 2025, free reserves amunted to £855.546 {2024'. £743,856).
The intention is to keep free reserves above £500.000 which equates to Iwo years running costs of the
charity. Any shortfall that may arise in restricieé funds in the futu￿ would be substituted by the free reserves
available.
The Trust prepares an annual budget for each finan¢ial year ouUining=
Anticipated income for general an(i restricted funds. and
Anticipated expenditure assoaated wtth all ast*cts of the charity's business. Some may be
committed expenditure on for example Heartteat House maintenance., grants extending over a one-
year period, this to be taken from general or restn.cted fvnds as appropriate.

disease.
2. Education and Trainlng- £150.000 ovarthe next 2 years
The continued fvnding of tx)th the 'Prehabiltlation' project, vthich seeks to impme the long-temi
outcomes of aortic stenosis patients through dieL light exercise and psychological suppor( and the
P.l.C.N.l.C. ￿SearCh wh￿h is centred around the effectiveness of stenting arteries. In addition,
evolving the 3-D heart technology inibab've from clinrAI care lo educating young surgeons and
cardiologists in how to treat some of the rTh)st complicated con9enital heart defects in infants and
young children.
3. Treaknerbt- £SOO,000 over the next 2 ygavs
Investment in the renovation of the Heart Failure Unrt and the cardiac outpatient's reception area within
the Wessex Cardiac Unit, continued funding for cardiac psychological support noljust for 11 to 25 year
olds, but also across all age detrngraphics, and investmenl in technology that aids quicker diagnosis
and speeds up the recovery process. In addition, the funding of the renovation of the non-inv8sNe
cardiac reception. which Is the 'gateway' for patients to the Wessex Cardiac Unrt in the University
Hospital Southampton.
4. Patient and Relative Support- £2.000,000 over the next 3 years
Improving the safety, cotnfort and qualtty of Heartbeat House to include an extension and the re4lesign
and renovation of both the lounge, kitchen and dining areas in the main house, and the inlegralion of
the annexe lo become part of the main building. In addib'on, the inlroduclion of the Heartbeat House
'brand' in other areas of the country that are b￿ssed with cardiac centres of excellence similar lo
South2mplon.

The trustees, who are also the directors of Wessex Cardiac Trust for the purpose of company law, are
responsible for preparing the Trustees, Report and financial statements in accordance with applicable law
and United Kingdom ArLounting Standards {Unrted Kingdom Generalty Accepted Accounling Practice).
