Rainbows4Children (UK) Trust is linked to Rainbows4Children Foundation, registered in Switzerland. Its aims are in harmony with those of the Swiss foundation, and all funds raised go to the same purposes as those of the Swiss Foundation. (See below, objectives)
Both the UK Trust and the Swiss Foundation are founded in memory of Nicolas Robinson 1991-1996.
Trustees are asked to be active in fundraising and to have an interest in breaking the cycle of poverty in Ethiopia through education. Trustees are asked to retire aged 70, and new trustees from the next generation are sought. It is preferred that trustees have visited the Nicolas Robinson School in Mekele, Ethiopia, at least once, as this the primary project of Rainbows4children (UK) Trust.
- trustees’ consideration of major risks and the system and procedures to manage them.
Section C Objectives and activities
Summary of the objects of the charity set out in its governing document

| Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit) |
Fund-raising takes place in the UK to raise money for the projects, which are currently in Ethiopia only. Most of the donations received from UK citizens are from individuals who sponsor a child to attend the Nicolas Robinson School in Mekele, Tigray, Ethiopia. The 2 biggest donors in 2021 supported supplementary food during the Civil war (November 2020-ongoing) and to sponsor 20 senior students to complete their schooling at the Nicolas Robinson School. The project funds in 2021 have been used for 2 main purposes: to pay the school staff and to provide food for the staff and the school children and their families during the civil war. The Nicolas Robinson School continues to educate 1400 students from kindergarten (aged 3.5 years) to graduation at Grade 12, aged 18 years) The building work of the essential buildings to run the school is now complete. In 2020 we continued to improve facilities. However formal school was suspended in mid-March due to the Covid pandemic and teachers prepared work for students at all levels as paper handouts, which we collected and distributed by family members. This continued until the end of June and resumed in October 2020. In November 202 war broke out in the region. Education continued in Mekele until the end of November 2020 when the school was bombarded. Throughout 2021 the school staff prepared for the re-start of school, which was expected at any moment. (Eventually in February 2022). The staff were trained in coping with their trauma and also to help the children recover from the stress and trauma of war and family bereavements. The school has been a feeding centre for our community of families, probably reaching about 10,000 people at times. The school also grew vegetables and other crops to provide better nutrition. A donor supported the installation of some solar panels which were at the school, having been donated previously. The trustees have read and understood the Charity Commission guidance on public benefit are in compliance. The activity in the continuing education and care of children’s health and well-being demonstrates this. |

Additional details of objectives and activities (Optional information)
All monies raised go directly to further the aims of the Trust. No trustees receive any remuneration. There are no employees of the Trust. Volunteers travel to Ethiopia to help in the school either at their own expense or supported directly by the founders, Max and Kathryn Robinson. Exceptionally, in 2021 there were no volunteers at the school due to the ongoing civil war in the region and consequent security issues for the volunteers.
You may choose to include further statements, where relevant, about:
Normally, volunteers visit the school on a regular basis to help train the teachers and management staff. All volunteers are DBS checked and have to sign that they are in compliance with the School’s child safety policy as well as sign a contract for their work.
-
policy on grantmaking;
-
policy programme related investment;
The UK independent examiner is also a volunteer, and gives his time free of charge, to enable the charity to focus 100% of the donations on the work in Ethiopia, as stated in its aims and charter.
- contribution made by volunteers.
Section D Achievements and performance
2021 was an exceptional year due to the civil war in the region which Summary of the main lasted the whole year. The focus was on education where possible, achievements of the charity mainly by sharing books and remote learning exercises. The school also during the year concentrated on the growing of food and protection of the school assets. The quality of the training and quality of education given by the school Rainbows4children, through sponsors, now helps the education of about 700 students at the school and a further 70 who have gone on to University. 4 alumni of the school have won scholarships overseas. 3 are studying at US universities: Macalester College, Rochester University, Triunity College, Hartford. The fourth is about to take ‘A’ levels at African Leadership Academy and has been offered a scholarship at Asia Pacific University in Japan.
Section E Financial review
Any cash reserves are invested in the deposit account at the bank. No Brief statement of the risk investments are made with the funds. As a small charity, the policy charity’s policy on reserves agreed by the trustees is to keep the equivalent of one years’ running cost of the School available (in the bank accounts) at all times, so that if funds cannot be raised in a particular year due to unforeseen circumstances, the school can still function and the staff of the school paid their salaries. Details of any funds materially in deficit

Further financial review details (Optional information)
You may choose to include additional information, where relevant about:
- the charity’s principal sources of funds (including any fundraising);
Fundraising is mainly from private donations and regular giving. This is mainly to support the sponsorship of Ethiopian children's education and provide funds for building the School and providing the running costs of the School.
