Rainbows4Children (UK) Trust is linked to Rainbows4Children Foundation, registered in Switzerland. Its aims are in harmony with those of the Swiss foundation, and all funds raised go to the same purposes as those of the Swiss Foundation. (See below, objectives)
Both the UK Trust and the Swiss Foundation are founded in memory of Nicolas Robinson 1991-1996.
Trustees are asked to be active in fundraising and to have an interest in breaking the cycle of poverty in Ethiopia through education. Trustees are asked to retire aged 70, and new trustees from the next generation are sought. It is preferred that trustees have visited the Nicolas Robinson School in Mekele, Ethiopia, at least once, as this the primary project of Rainbows4children (UK) Trust.
- trustees’ consideration of major risks and the system and procedures to manage them.
Section C Objectives and activities
Summary of the objects of the charity set out in its governing document
(1) to relieve poverty and suffering in sub-Saharan Africa and particularly (but not exclusively) Ethiopia (the “ Region ”) through the support and provision of aid for construction and development projects with particular emphasis on projects relating to healthcare (including the equipping of health facilities such as hospitals, clinics and health centres), and self-help projects supporting local communities (such as securing water supplies and the development of small agricultural projects), but

excluding support for any commercial activities or projects which are of a purely political, religious or pacifist nature; (2) to promote and support the advancement of education in the Region in particular through projects supporting the establishment and support of schools, and the provision of teaching and education for children and young people;
(3) to relieve poverty and financial hardship among beneficiaries in the Region, by providing or procuring, amongst other things, financial assistance and support for the welfare and health of beneficiaries , who by reason of their social and economic conditions are in need of such assistance.
Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)
Fund-raising takes place in the UK to raise money for the projects, which are currently in Ethiopia only. Most of the donations received from UK citizens are from individuals who sponsor a child to attend the Nicolas Robinson School in Mekele, Tigray, Ethiopia. The biggest single donor in 2020 supported supplementary food during the Covid pandemic for and medical support for the Nicolas Robinson School. The project funds have been used to build and run the Nicolas Robinson School, which educates 1400 Ethiopian children who are the children of disadvantaged families. The parents of these children are, in the main, suffering from disabilities as a result of injuries in war, land mines and illness, including blindness caused by infections. The school currently educates kindergarten (3 years) and primary school aged children (grades 1-8) and the secondary school (grades 9-12). This takes students to the age at which they can apply to University or other further education. The building work of the essential buildings to run the school is now complete. In 2020 we continued to improve facilities. However formal school was suspended in mid-March due to the Covid pandemic and teachers prepared work for students at all levels as paper handouts, which we collected and distributed by family members. This continued until the end of June. During September/October the Education Bureau discussed how to resume teaching with input from the School. School had just re-started for grades 8 and 12 (exam years) when war broke out in the region. Since the war started no school has been possible. All contact was lost for 6 weeks, as phone and internet services were blocked. From 12[th] December phone calls were possible again and the city of Mekele was less damaged than the rest of the region. We are optimistic that school can resume in February 2021 and we can assess the condition of the children. Effectively a year of schooling for all children has been lost in the region and many will be suffering from malnutrition. The focus for 2021 will be on restitution and recovery.
The trustees have read and understood the Charity Commission guidance on public benefit are in compliance. The activity in building work and education of children demonstrates this.

Additional details of objectives and activities (Optional information)
All monies raised go directly to further the aims of the Trust. No trustees receive any remuneration. There are no employees of the Trust. Volunteers travel to Ethiopia to help in the school either at their own expense or supported directly by the founders, Max and Kathryn Robinson. In 2020 there were 3 volunteers from the UK at the school and about none from other countries (due to Covid).
You may choose to include further statements, where relevant, about:
-
policy on grantmaking;
-
policy programme related investment;
Volunteers visit the school on a regular basis to help train the teachers and management staff. All volunteers are DBS checked and have to sign that they are in compliance with the School’s child safety policy.
The UK independent examiner is also a volunteer, and gives his time free of charge, to enable the charity to focus 100% of the donations on the work in Ethiopia, as stated in its aims and charter.
- contribution made by volunteers.
Section D Achievements and performance In 2020, the quality of the training and quality of education given by the Summary of the main school continued to increase. achievements of the charity Rainbows4children, through sponsors, now helps the education of about during the year 490 students at the school and a further 70 who have gone on to University. Volunteers focus on training trainers and upgrading skills, particularly on spoken English and practical science. The School was donated a borehole by a local NGO, the Relief Society of Tigray (REST). Funds are being used also to store the water and distribute it around the school. Students can take water home with them if needed, as many homes in the city do not have access to regular clean water. Section E Financial review Any cash reserves are invested in the deposit account at the bank. No Brief statement of the risk investments are made with the funds. As a small charity, the policy charity’s policy on reserves agreed by the trustees is to keep the equivalent of one years’ running cost of the School available (in the bank accounts) at all times, so that if funds cannot be raised in a particular year due to unforeseen circumstances, the school can still function and the staff of the school paid their salaries. Details of any funds materially in deficit

Further financial review details (Optional information)
You may choose to include additional information, where relevant about:
- the charity’s principal sources of funds (including any fundraising);
Fundraising is mainly from private donations and regular giving. This is mainly to support the sponsorship of Ethiopian children's education and provide funds for building the School and providing the running costs of the School.
The Trust document does not allow any investment of funds in high-risk investments, so funds are invested in a bank deposit account.
-
how expenditure has supported the key objectives of the charity;
-
investment policy and objectives including any ethical investment policy adopted.
