Trustees’ Report
Objectives
The charity’s sole activity is the running of the Giant’s Seat Campsite (the campsite), which is a back-to-basics campsite where users can experience real camping without the frills or be based in Martin Lodge which has bunkbeds and showers.
The campsite is used by all uniformed groups and is used by school and business groups.
The charity aims to assist the development of young people into responsible citizens and members of their local and national communities.
Activities & Performance
The campsite has started to come alive again post-COVID-19; campers are eager to use the site again.
The campsite has had some maintenance done to it, too. This includes a new barbecue area (courtesy of money given from the Glynn Harris fund).
One of the major works to take place has been to secure the main field from bikers and walkers. This has been done through a large fence going through the trees surrounding the campsite with a secondary fence nearer the main field to deter bikers speeding up the slopes. Due to its size and scope, this is ongoing work.
The campsite has also hosted a number of groups including volunteers from the Employee Volunteers Company and Duke of Edinburgh Students. The site is also being used as a filming location for - among others - BBC Children’s Television.
Structure, governance and management
The charity is separate to Prestwich, Radcliffe and Whitefield Scout District (an amalgamation of Radcliffe and Prestwich & Whitefield Scout Districts).
PAGE OF 4 12 Giants Seat Campsite Executive: Charity Number: 1115895
The day-to-day running of the campsite - including ongoing upkeep and maintenance - is dealt with by a campsite committee which is managed by Ann Chapman.
Strategic and long-term management issues are dealt with by the Trustees.
The campsite and all committees are run entirely on a voluntary basis.
The charity is managed in accordance with its constitution. The campsite is run in accordance with the Scout Association’s ‘Policy, Organisation and Rules’ (POR) as is Prestwich, Radcliffe and Whitefield Scout District.
Financial review and adequacy of reserves
The accounts show the Campsite’s financial position, activities for the year and its accounting and reserve policies.
Plans for future period
The trustees and management are working together to get a 10 year plan finalised in the new year. This will include looking at new income streams and how to diversify the usability of the campsite.
Public benefit statement
The charity’s trustees confirm that they have complied with their duty to have due regard to the guidance on public benefit published by the Charity Commission in exercising their duties and powers.

Accounting and other policies
a) Accounting principles
The accounts have been prepared, as permitted, on a ‘receipts and payments’ basis in a consistent manner. Distortions can arise due to the timing of receipts and payments from accounts prepared on an accruals basis which aim to include transactions in the accounting period to which they apply regardless of when settled in cash. Such distortions may arise regarding:
Recognition of income
- The accounts only include camp fees received and other charges received in the period regardless of when any service is to be or was provided.
Utility and insurance costs
- No prepayment or accrual is shown in the accounts for insurance premiums or utility costs.
Maintenance charges
- Invoices for repairs and maintenance may be paid in the period after the work was carried out.
b) Accounting reserves and funds
There is no fixed policy on reserves, restricted or designated funds. The Trustees consider the current level of unrestricted reserves to be at the right level to meet the immediate future needs of the Charity.
