## **Chichester Chamber Concerts**

## **Trustees' Annual Report for the year ending 31[st] May 2023**

The Charity's principal address is: 43 North Street, Chichester, PO19 1NF

The trustees who manage the charity are:

Anna Hill (Chairman), Philip Wake (Treasurer), Emma-Jane Wyatt (Artistic Director), David Billinge (Secretary), Sally Chittleburgh, and Anne Foxell. Kevin Maynard is also a committee member.

The trustees acted for the whole of the year. All members stand down after three years and, if willing, are then re-elected by the committee. Raymond Greenlees stood down as a Trustee and is thanked for his many years of service.

The object of the Society is to promote, improve, develop and maintain public education in the appreciation of the art and science of music in all its aspects by the presentation of public concerts and recitals; and for such general purposes as shall be exclusively charitable as the trustees may from time to time decide. The main activity of the Society is to present a series of chamber music concerts each year which are open to all.

The charity is a society governed by a constitution which was adopted on 25[th] July 2006. In January 2006 a new series of four chamber music concerts was launched at the Chichester Assembly Room which quickly became six concerts between October and March. From time-to-time CCC stages a celebrity concert at Champs Hill Music Room, by kind invitation of the Bowerman Charitable Trust. The Society has no endowments, and its income depends on a combination of ticket sales, sponsorship, donations and occasional grants. The support of our own members in becoming patrons and sponsors has always been important to us and this support is greatly appreciated.

This season was the first recent one unaffected by Covid-19 pandemic restrictions on audience numbers. Nevertheless, none of the concerts played to a full audience as the Covid effect lingered, with ticket sales of between 130 to 150 versus the budgeted 160 and capacity of 170. Two special concerts were also staged. The first was in June as part of the Festival of Chichester by the Camarilla Ensemble. The audience was small due to many competing events and our loss would have been greater without a generous donation in support. This experiment will not be repeated. The second was at Champs Hill Music Room where Julian Arp and Caspar Franz gave a wonderful recital in this beautiful setting. We also facilitated a visit by the Camarilla Ensemble to a local Primary school.

Overall, we made a loss in the year of £2,548 (2022 loss £9,125) and drew down on our reserves to ensure we continued to stage the concerts and meet our charitable objects. A nineteenth season of six concerts is to start on 5th October 2023. Our forecast for the next season is, as always, prudently based with an excellent range of ensembles and we are fortunate to have a grant from the City Council as initial support. We hope that we can count on continuing sponsorship from Raymond James, Chichester and member donations to help meet the rising costs of staging these excellent concerts.

We continue to offer free tickets to young people under 25 under the auspices of the Cavatina Chamber Music Trust Student Ticket Scheme, which aims to introduce young people to chamber music.

The current reserves policy is to have sufficient funds to cover the cost of a season's concerts, meet half the cost of the free young persons’ tickets, and fund any exceptional costs involved in making improvements to the presentation of our concerts (higher fees, lighting, music stands, etc).

The trustees declare that they have approved this trustees' annual report and that the charity remains a going concern.

Signed on behalf of the charity's trustees: Anna Felicity Hill Philip Wake Chairman Treasurer
