FOPS AGM 2020
Chair’s Report
Welcome everyone to the FOPS AGM. If it’s your first time joining us, I sincerely hope that it’s the first of many. And speaking of firsts, this is the first time that we’ve held the AGM virtually – so please bear with us through any potential technical issues. It’s usual practice at the AGM to start with a summary of FOPS’ achievements over the past year, but starting with anything other than a reference to Covid-19 doesn’t seem quite right. So I’d like to begin by saying that the second half of the school year was clearly a very strange one, with most (although not all!) of FOPS’ work inevitably put on hold. And although our wonderful school is again open to all of our children – and hopefully will remain so hereafter – clearly FOPS can’t operate in the same way it has done in the past.
But our work is probably more important than ever – many families have been hit financially by the crisis and may need our help sourcing good quality, pre-loved school uniform and coats, teachers may find themselves in need of different resources to help them deliver the curriculum in a Covid-secure way, and last, but by no means least, the children deserve to have some fun. So while we will need to adapt the way that we work, the one thing that is certain is that there is still work to be done! Summary of FOPS’s achievements
As a PTA, our objectives have always been to:
-
Raise funds to support the school
-
Bring the school community together by putting on fun events for the children and their families
Fundraising
I’ll leave it to Charlotte, our Treasurer, to talk through the numbers in detail, but will just note here that despite the cancellation of many events last term including our biannual circus and our biggest profit maker, the Summer Fair, we still managed to raise over £15,000 in 2019/20, allowing us to pay for a new computer in every classroom, the school’s annual Mathletics subscription, and many other small sundries. The majority of our funds came from events, including:
-
Fireworks – this was held on a Saturday for the first time so we were unsure how it would go. Thankfully the torrential rain stopped for the display which was as fantastic as ever, and the fairground rides that we hired for the first time proved a huge hit
-
The Christmas Fair – the Polar Express was extremely popular with the little ones, helping us to make a record-breaking profit
-
Break the Rules Day – a firm favourite with the children, and a great money maker for the school
-
Family Bingo – hosted by the hilarious Silly Billy, it was a great night of pizza, prizes and laughs just before lockdown
Communication
Our class-based WhatsApp groups continued to work well during 2019/20, so will remain the primary way that we communicate with parents and carers across the school going forward. We also manage closed Facebook groups for each year, which are a good way of exchanging information between different classes, and circulate a termly newsletter via email so you can always keep up with developments. Going green
Last year we made it a priority to try to reduce our environmental footprint as a PTA and more generally as a school community. We introduced the role of Environmental Reps to FOPS for the first time.

FRIENDS OF PARISH (CHURCH OF ENGLAND) PRIMARY SCHOOL PARENT TEACHER ASSOCIATION ACCOUNTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 AUGUST 2020
We continued to take part in the Terracycle scheme, collecting crisp packets, dental waste and pens for recycling, and moved away from the usual plastic-based prizes at our Christmas Fair. Over the summer, we encouraged the Green Ideas Exchange Facebook group to be used as a place to sell or donate pre-loved school uniform, and we’ll continue to push this.
Thank You!
All of the above was the result of the hard work and commitment of a number of people, each of whom I’d like to thank here.
Firstly, I’d like to thank the FOPS Committee, a small group of parents, grandparents and carers who volunteer hours of their time to support the whole Parish community, whether through events, communications or one of the other small initiatives that go on behind the scenes. Thank you in particular to Katie Rowe, Sinead Rook, Victoria Virtue-Boussie and Shonagh D’Sylva who are stepping down from the Committee this year after several years of dedicated service.
Thank you too to Mrs Coleman, Miss Ward (our teacher representative on the FOPS Committee) and all of the teaching and support staff who have supported us this year. And of course, thank you to all parents and carers across the school who have helped us by volunteering at events, baking cakes, designing posters and all the other ways that you get stuck in – we couldn’t achieve anything without your support.
The coming year
The next 12 months are full of uncertainty, but what we can be sure of is that our work will go on. Though many of our usual events have been cancelled, we are committed to doing as much as we can to put on fun, safe activities for the children and raise much-needed funds for the school. On fundraising, we’ve just signed up to Amazon Smile – if you shop on Amazon, please consider nominating FOPS as your charity of choice, as we’ll receive a donation of 0.5% of everything you spend. We’re also just about to launch Your School Lottery – a weekly lottery with a guaranteed cash winner for our school every week, the chance to win the £25,000 jackpot and 100% of profit ploughed straight back into Parish. Our Parish runners are also aiming to run over 500 km between them over the month of October and have so far raised over £1200 in just one week.
