**Annual Report and Annual Accounts 2020/2021**

## CHAIR’S STATEMENT

2020/21 was completely a different year in terms of the unprecedented challenges posed by the COVID-19 Pandemic and the Lockdown that has affected every one of our society. With regards to the vulnerable communities, the impact was extremely huge. Throughout the country, we have lost so many of our beloved people to COVID-19. In addition, as face to face services stopped because of the lockdown, vulnerable families who have already been digitally excluded have suffered a lot as they faced difficulties to access mainstream services that have moved online. Children and young people were particularly hit by the lockdown and other COVID-19 restrictions as schools, colleges and universities were closed and education was delivered online. According to the empirical data collected the mental health of the young people and children was increasingly on the rise.

SADC working in close cooperation with local authorities and other voluntary organisation have tried its best to work with and support vulnerable children, youth and families. We have reached so many of our service-users via virtual platforms and telephones. Although 2020/21 knife crime incidents have fallen in comparison with the previous years, there were still victims of knife crimes. The battle to safeguard young people from violent crime continues.

At the heart of SADC mission is to work hard in order to meet these difficult challenges through solidarity and cooperation with the community, the local authority, and voluntary organisations. We have worked alongside a vast range of statutory organisations to try curb the issue of violent crime. This could not be achieved without the hard work, dedication and enthusiasm of our staff, volunteers, and management committee, all of which have been instrumental in SADC meeting the needs of the community.

In its 9[th] year, Ealing Somali Youth Project funded by MOPAC via Ealing Council has been in has contributed massively to reduce the vulnerability of the youth to gang culture, youth violence and youth radicalisation. The project has helped Somali Youth at risk to steer away from negative influences that could lead them to crime. The project has also worked with young offenders by providing them with one-on-one mentoring to help them divert from a criminal lifestyle - and guide them to positive pathway. Furthermore, the Somali Community Resilience Project has continued to be hugely beneficial to both young people and parents. The main objective was to raise the resilience and knowledge of the participants to the threat of radicalisation and 3 extremism and the common vulnerability factors that may draw people to radicalisation of all types. Knowledge and skills gained throughout the workshop sessions help safeguard vulnerable people, as radicalisation is also another huge issue within the community, as the Somali community fall into both Black and Muslim communities simultaneously.

It is a great honour for me to take this opportunity to send my sincere thanks to the management committee, staff and our dedicated volunteers for their efficiency, diligence, and commitment, which made this achievement possible.

We are immensely thankful to all funders whose financial support and assistance has allowed us to continue the noble work we do for the community. This is and has been great support without which the services we do for the community would not have been possible. We are particularly grateful to Ealing Council, the Home Office and MOPAC.
