**Charity Mission:** The PTA works alongside the school to enrich children’s school experience. We raise funds and run activities to improve the school’s resources and equipment and to strengthen the Brookburn community. We focus on **outdoor** and **creative** projects, supporting learning through play.
This mission supports the **charitable objectives and purpose** as set out in the constitution “to advance the education of pupils in the school, in particular by 1) developing effective relationships between the staff, parents and others associated with the school 2) engaging in activities or providing facilities or equipment which support the school and advance the education of pupils”
This annual report covers the period 1st September 2024- 31st August 2025 and provides an overview of fundraising activities/income and spend over this period, setting out what we’ve done during the year to achieve these objectives. All activities have been carried out in accordance with the public benefit requirement (guided by the Charity Commission's public benefits guidance). This was an exciting year for the PTA in which we reached our fundraising goal for the **EYFS playground upgrade** ! A new climbing frame was selected by the school and work took place at the end of the summer, ready for children to enjoy during the school year 2025-26.
## **Acknowledgements**
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to all the parents, volunteers and local businesses who generously give their time, resources and support—whether by helping at events, taking the lead in organising them, donating goods or services, or stepping up to run stalls. Fundraising is vital for our wonderful school, enabling us to support initiatives and projects that would simply not be possible in the current climate of financial challenge. Just as importantly, these events bring our community together, strengthening relationships and friendships that would not otherwise be formed—among both adults and children alike. They create additional opportunities for our children to enjoy memorable experiences, while also seeing first-hand the value of shared responsibility, teamwork, and taking accountability for our environment and our community. We would also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to our regular helpers, whose support across the year makes such a difference to Brookburn PTA events and the wider school community. To **Jo Tedds** for all her help with the **winter jumpers and quiz** ; to **Victoria Pettyt** for the Christmas Wreath raffle, to **Jo Konkel** for her help with the **Christmas cards** ; to **Bex Wolfendale** for leading the ever-popular **Welly Walk** ; to **Thomas Graham** for sorting out our gift aid registration, to **Mark from the Bowling Green** for his continued support; and to **Matt Brown** for his support with **The Brookburn Bar,** as well all the other regular helpers, including **Lorien Helm, Hana Kubcova and Amy Knowles** , who so generously gave their time and energy throughout the year. We are also very grateful to local businesses such as **Ludo** and **Nell’s** for their generosity and support, which has helped make our events such a success. We are incredibly grateful for the enthusiasm, reliability and community spirit each of you brings.

## **Governance**
The charity is managed by a committee and supported by around 10 regular volunteers and up to 100 ad hoc volunteers across the year. Committee members are elected at each Annual General Meeting and trustees are appointed from the committee. Selection is done in accordance with the governing document (PTA constitution).
## **The trustees and committee members for this period were:**

In July 2025, **Mariche Chambers** stepped down from the PTA after volunteering for 12 months as Secretary and Trustee. We are extremely grateful to Mariche for the time, care and expertise she dedicated to the role. With her trademark eagle-eye attention to detail, Mariche carefully reviewed charity handbooks and regulations, helping to ensure that the PTA operated safely, responsibly and fully in line with our legal and regulatory obligations as a charity and as trustees. Much of the Secretary’s work happens behind the scenes, carrying significant
responsibility—knowing when accounts and documents must be filed, ensuring the required number of meetings take place each year, preparing and submitting minutes to the Charity Commission, and navigating complex legislation. Mariche carried out all of this with commitment and professionalism, alongside being a busy lawyer, a mum to two sons at Brookburn, a wonderful wife, a sensational chef, and a valued friend. We also welcome **Sarah Rigby** , who was appointed as the new Secretary and Trustee, and we thank her for stepping into this important role.
As this report is being presented in 2026 we would also like to extend our thanks to committee members who are stepping down in 2026, and who provided a wonderful service to the PTA during the reporting period:
We would also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to **Karen Lord** —a truly formidable force and very much deserving of her badge for getting things done. Karen has attended countless PTA meetings, acting as a vital conduit between the school and the PTA to help organise events, check the school diary, coordinate staff on the day, and support events in every possible way. She has never hesitated to roll up her sleeves, whether that meant getting stuck into the kitchen to serve food and drinks at fairs and discos, answering questions, or obtaining quotes for projects jointly run by the school and the PTA. Karen’s availability, dedication and practical support have been invaluable. We will miss her enormously and wish her all the very best in her new role—and we very much hope she will still join us at future events.
Finally, and by no means least, we would like to thank **Tiffany Chong** . Tiff is a stalwart of Brookburn School and the face of so much that is positive, proactive and passionate about keeping our school eco-friendly. She has been a loyal and dedicated PTA Trustee for longer than any of us can count, witnessing many different iterations of the PTA as members have come and gone—yet Tiff has remained a constant throughout. It is impossible to list all of Tiff’s achievements and success stories in making our school a better, safer and more sustainable place. From applying for countless funding grants to deliver projects such as the bike sheds and bin stores, to championing School Streets and wider environmental initiatives, her impact has been profound and lasting. Brookburn is a stronger, greener and

more forward-thinking school because of Tiff’s commitment, determination and unwavering belief in what our community can achieve.
## **Fundraising activities**
Six events were held during this reporting period: the Halloween Disco; PTA Pub Quiz, Winter Jumper sale; Winter hot drinks stall; Welly Walk; the Summer Fair. The rest of the funds raised over this reporting period were from individual donations and the school lottery.
A treasurer’s report of takings and expenditure can be found in Annex 1.
## **Halloween Disco**
## **Funds raised: £2073.69**
The children had a wonderful time at the Winter Disco (organised by **Brookburn PTA** with support from parent volunteers). The disco was split into two sessions, with an earlier slot for reception and key stage 1 and a later slot for key stage 2. This worked really well and children at both sessions loved the free hotdog and squash and the tuck shop. The craft area provided a fun alternative activity alongside the disco. The committee would like to thank everyone involved.
## **The Pub Quiz Funds raised: £638.27**
The PTA Pub Quiz, kindly hosted once again at the Bowling Green, was a fantastic evening and we are hugely grateful to **Mark Canny** for his continued generosity in providing the venue. The one and only quizmaster, Jo Tedds, expertly managed the roaring, quizzical crowds with the pizzazz and energy of her now-iconic sequinned jacket—henceforth to be known as _the Quiz Coat_ . With Jo at the helm, no cheat went unnoticed; the rules, after all, are the rules. Huge thanks also go to Mariche for preparing University Challenge-style questions that left some of us merely dreaming of victory—and perhaps a packet of out-of-date crisps. A great evening was had by all, filled with laughter, friendly competition and excellent company.
## **Welly Walk Funds raised £9324.21**
The Welly Walk was another hugely popular event, and our heartfelt thanks go to the ever-modest **Bex Wolfendale** —the Welly Walk guru—who has thoughtfully written and refined the protocol that makes this event run so seamlessly year after year. The Welly Walk brings all the children together to stay active, enjoy the outdoors, and take part in a healthy spirit of competition as they count how many laps they can complete, all while knowing they are raising money for their school. We are incredibly lucky at Brookburn to have such a beautiful outdoor space, which provides the perfect setting for this event. The Welly Walk marked a wonderful way to celebrate the arrival of British summertime and the excitement of Easter. An extra treat awaited the class that raised the most money, who were rewarded with delicious pizza enjoyed together at school—what a well-deserved treat.
## **Summer Fair Funds raised: £4312.76**
The Summer Fair was a particular highlight and a fantastic example of the community coming together. The event

featured a wide range of stalls and activities, including Nell’s Pizza, hot dogs, cake and sweet treat stalls, bric-a-brac, Lego modelling, arts and crafts, and face painting. The Brookburn Arms bar proved very popular, alongside games galore and plenty of fun for all ages. We are especially grateful to **Mark at the Bowling Green, and his brilliant team—Matt, Matt and Dave—** for their support and enthusiasm, which helped make the day such a success.
The Summer Fair was led by the incoming committee and was a fantastic team effort from a large group of volunteers.
## _Activities and Entertainment_
The children loved the traditional game stalls, the face painting, activities hosted by We Are Adventurers and Chorlton Green Villa FC, the entertainment from the Comedy Club and the brilliant DJ. Thank you to **Lee Folkard, Lucy and Katy Walker-Etchells, Hana Kubacova** , **Amy Knowles** and the teachers who ran games, activities and entertainment (and helped in lots of other ways).
## _Stalls_
The tombola and pre-loved/tat stall were really popular. Thank you to **Lorien Helm** for coordinating and running the pre-loved stall and to **Ceri Riley** for organising and running the tombola.. Thank you, too, to everyone who grew flowers and plants for the eco stall, and to **Tiff Chong** and the school streets team/eco team for managing the stall.
## _Food and Drink_
The selection of food and drink was also fabulous. Thank you to **Mark Canny** from the Bowling Green and **Matt Brow, Matt and Dave** for running the ‘Brookburn Arms’, to **Ludo and Darren** from Epicerie Ludo for the ice cream, to all of the bakers who contributed to the cake and sweet shop and to **Jo Konkel** for organising the pizzas from Nells. Another special thanks to **Nells Chorlton** for agreeing to provide such a generous discount.
The event couldn’t have happened without the support and time of the staff and teachers (particularly **Beth Owen** and **Karen Lord** ), parents, grandparents, and friends of the school who volunteered their time. This included a lot of ‘behind the scenes’ jobs: sourcing gazebos, sorting licensing (thank you to **Jo Konkel** ), designing posters and maps (thank you to **Shelly Keane** and **Sarah Rees** ), risk assessments (thank you to **Paula Coward** ) and electrics (thank you to **Ande Whatley** ). The committee would like to extend a huge thanks to everyone who participated in the organising, set up, staffing and clean up. We’d also like to extend another big thanks **Tiff Chong** for her tremendous PTA knowledge and experience that helped to bring everything together.
## **School Lottery Funds raised: £2437.88**
The PTA is signed up to a weekly online school lottery “My School Lottery”. Parents and members of the school community sign up through an online platform for the chance to win a cash prize. The PTA receives 40% of each entry.
## **Individual donations Funds raised: £1631.71**
A number of parents and supporters give regularly to the PTA via direct debit and provide one off donations through the year. Thank you to everyone who supports the PTA in this way.
## **Impact**
As set out above both the charity expenditure and events support the PTA’s mission and purpose, and all trustees

had regard to Charity Commission public benefit guidance while overseeing delivery. In this reporting period fundraising activities supported school priorities:
## **EYFS playground project**
We met our multi-year fundraising goal for the EYFS climbing frame! This was a huge effort from everyone involved and it was fantastic to work with the school to pick out a new climbing frame ready for the next school year.
## **Art belonging project**
The “belonging” art project enabled pupils to explore themes of identity, inclusion, and community through creative activities with the support of a local artist.
## **Ghyll Head**
The year 6s had a fantastic trip to Ghyll Head outdoor activity centre on the banks of Windermere.
We also delivered the following outdoor projects led by our PTA Eco & Outdoor volunteers:
## **School Streets**
Brookburn School Streets is a community-based initiative led by the Brookburn PTA in partnership with local residents, school leadership, Manchester City Council, Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), and Walk Ride GM.
The scheme introduces a temporary restriction on motorised traffic along Brookburn Road during the morning and afternoon school runs. This creates a safer, greener, and more active environment for children, parents, and staff at the school gates.
We are supported by a dedicated group of volunteer marshals, and we are incredibly grateful for their ongoing commitment and support. If you would like to get involved or learn more, please visit the School Street page on the PTA website.
## **Allotment and Outdoor Spaces**
The PTA also plays a vital role in maintaining and developing the school’s outdoor areas. Brookburn pupils benefit from access to an exceptional outdoor environment, including an acre of woodland with a pond and walking trails, as well as an allotment and various play spaces.
Parents regularly support the school by volunteering at outdoor working days, helping to:
- Top up sandpits
- Tidy and maintain the allotment
- Improve outdoor play areas
- Support development of areas such as the **Nature Trail and woodland spaces**
We are currently developing a long-term improvement plan, identifying areas in need of repair or investment. Areas identified include:
- Renovation of the pond dipping area

- Ongoing maintenance of outdoor learning and play spaces

**Responsibilities and basis** As the charity's trustees, you are responsible for the preparation of the **of report** accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”).
I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
**Independent examiner's statement** I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect:
