Endangered Asian Specles Trust Trnstees Report UK Charlty 115350 February 2020 to February 2021 The Endangered Asian Species Trust works to help stop the illegal trade of primates. with a specific focus in Vietnam. The Dao fien Endangered Primate Species Centre. in Vietnam, was founded in 2008 and continues to work in collaboration with the Minislry of Agriculture and Rural Development in the rescue. rehabilitation and release of endangered primates. natufally occurring in Vietnam. Running alongside the animal welfare there is a strong education awareness program, working in schools, local communits'es and inlernalionally. A¢tlvlties- 1. Endangered Prlmate Rescue Dao Tien receives endangered primales confiscated by the Vietnamese Government authoritie5. enforcing national and intemalional law. In this last year Dao Tien rescued 3 gokfjenheeked gibbons (Nomascus gabriellae), 5 douc langur5 {Pygalhrix nigripes, Pyagthrix cinerea). 1 Bengal sbw Icrfis INyctlbs bengalensisl and 7 pygmy slow kyis (Nycticebus pygmaeusl from the illegal wildlife trade. 1.1 Noma$cus'. The crested gibbons invofved two irrfants and one mature female from the illegal p81 trade. The gibbons underwenl health screening and socialisation- the Iwo infants were adopted by 8 surrcgate mother and an adolescent female. The aduh tsrna live alongSKfe another pair of gibbons. at this lime we have no adult males to pair her with. Identified issues.. Two issues which have been idenitfied (a} A high percentage of gibbons rescueLS are unfil for release, based on disease profile or social behaviour. Therefore. exit strategies Ire- homing in non-release cenlresl need lo be found. This strategy will be considered by the Government. with investigation starting this next year (bl Dao Tien at present is over capacity and cannot receive any mre adult gibbons. This issue will be addressed by developing exf( strategies and the construction of tsvo new forested enclosures on Dao Tien. The aim ts lo achieve a fknw of primates. at high levels of wefare throughout. 1.2 Pygathrlx.. The rescue of infant douc Ihis lasl year has been ovr hffjhest recorded since we opened in 2008. This high influx is mirrored in rescue centres in Cambodia. indicating greater hunting pressure on this genus throughout its natural range. Figure 1 (left). Infant Nomascus gabriellae rescued from the illegal pel Irade Ho Chi Minh City. Figu 2 (nghl}. Infant Pyaglthix inereas. rescued from the illegal pel trade.
For infant douc temporary han&rearing facilities have been eonstrueted. Idenlffjed issues= Dao Tien had no specialisl enck)sures for hand rearing orphan douc at this time. tsking into consideration the high level of sensitivity vrilh this genus.. extra lemperalure regulation needed for orphans (who rapidty develop pneumonia rf not kept warrn in the cooler monlhsl, sensittve nutritional as highly specialised feeders and demanding social needs. They are significantly more sensitive than infant gibbons. Plans have been made for a new speeialisl building irb 2021- 2022 taking into consideration all these needs. plus Ihe planning of 1000 food trees on Dao Tien. 1.3 Nycticebus: Slow loris rescue has been continuous since 2008. wlth the rescue of over 148 indivKJuals. Most have arrived malnourished with minor injuries. Emergency care on arrival has now been established for this species. Figure 3. Pygmy slow kjrrs {NyGticebus pygmaeusl health check .2. Endangered Primate Rehabilitation The rehabililalion of endangered primates is a constant development of husbandry techniques, using new data gathered from wild observations and post-release indiwduals. 2.1 Nomas¢u5.' We continue lo care for 36 rescued gibbons frorn the illegal trade. al different stages of rehabililalion Iqu?rantine lo release). Maintaining and improving the standard of welfare for non- rdeasable gibbons and improving our phase two rehabilitst*Jn process before lease. Figure 4. Rehabililalion of Nomascus gabriellae in phase 2 forested enclosures on Dao Tien Island. Identifd issues: Nomas¢us gibbons humanise easily and the need for more forested enck)sures instead of cages al the start of rehabilitatn is importanL
2.2 NYcticebS'. continued rehabililation and preparation for release of pygmy slow loris. We have identified long-lerm captive pygmy slow bris after a period of >3 monlhs in a forested enclosure can be released. The cenlie manages a flow of pygmy slow loris on average with rescue lo release within 3 months for mosl indNiduals. Captive husbandry protoccAs are being completed. 2.3 Pygathrix- The social. physi1 and nutritional need5 of orphan infanl douc are very challenging in captivity. We have a focu5sed team who provide emotional support. another team who collect known wild dou¢ leaf species and wild douc faeces lo help maintain a healthy gut. Figure 5 & 6, our focussed hand rearing douc team providing day and night care. Figure 5 & 6. Orphan Pygathrix hand rearing. Identified issues= The rehabilitatn of douc (espe¢iaNy black-shanked> is challenging. (a) Initially douc close down after the shock of hunting. it is ciear that the best way to manage this shock is peer support. So. il is now proposed for all rescued douc in the south lo transfer to Dao Tien, when near olheT douc they have the best chance of 5urvr¥al. Dao Tien as a focussed douc rescue centre for Vietnam has been approved by Ihe Minislry of Agricullure and Rural development. Ibl Diel management is key. rnainlaining a gut flora matching Ihat of wikj douc and managing a low sugar diet. Dao Tien, a forested island is perfeclly placed for collecting wild douc leaf and wild faeoes. for transiti to a leaf eating gut after the infant milk diet. It has been agreed Ihal 1000 specrfic wild dou¢ feed trees will be planted on Dao Tien to maintain a constant suppty for rehabilitating individuals. Ic} With the aim to release the douc back to the wild. new techniques for rehabilitation are required. On Dao Tien we have a wild group of doucs {reintroduced in 20101. The group is now 10 strong wilh several infants. Rehabilitation has involved taking the older orphans down to Ihis group, with the possibility that they may integrate wrth them in the future. This process is done very earefully as limited data is known on Ihe social organisaiion of Ihe dou¢$ and rf they are like langurs who practi high levels on infankn"cide. Further observations are needed.
-ILI Figure 7 {lop). reintroduced male doue. Figure 8 (Seftl- two black-shanked infants and Figure 9. observing the reinlroduced wild group lo the orphans. 3. Endangered Primate Release 3.1. Nycti¢ebus-. Continued managed release of 9 pygmy sknw loris, including the successful release of individuals from long-lemi captivity (over 8 years) and bom in captivity. This is important, especially lo see if the ¢aplive bom individuals can be rehabilitated and successfvlly retumed to the wild. The releases were successful and one female bom on Dao Tien survive(I wilh posl-release monitoring of 7 months.
Figure 10. Our slow loris wild monitoring led by Vo Thanh Binh. now with 10 years. experience of release and posl-release monitoring. Identified issues.. Not being able to release Bengal slow10ri5. The genetics dala on Bengal slow loris is not yel available lo clarify the origin for indbviduals we receive. and thus where they should be released (Vietnam. Carnbodia or Thailandl. We hope wilh continued collatN)ration with Professor Anna Nekaris this will be achieved. 3.2 Nornascus: This year we wntinued monitoriThJ a released single female Nomascus gabriellae. After 11 month5 we had lo intervene and relum her lo the cenlre. The single golden-cheeked female Bien in April still was rnl covering a large area and importantly had not yet sung or linked up with a wild lone male. At this lime local people enter the forest to ¢olle¢l forest fruits, (for a cancer cure), the people understood the project and did not try to catch the gibbcm, bul Bien made Ihe choice to go cbse to the people. The decision was made al this point to inleryene and relum her to Dao Tien. IdentifRd issues.. (al the dats suggests that Sing females travel little and are quiel. reduciro opportunities for finding wild males. Next releases will be famity groups (bl they can behave as if they are kjnely. and thus seek out other primates. humans. Although the female was re8red by a surrogate gibbon, she was sbll too humanised. (c} The prqe¢t needs lo be stronger in mainlaining as few human links as possible in the rehabililation prccess. Getting individuals into foresled encfv)sures as soon as possible when infant. (d) Another idenkn.fied issue was the lack of effective collaboration with forestry protection in Cal Tien. This has now been addre55ed for future release lel Telemetry monitoring was weak due to high attenuaiK)n of Ihe signal. For future releases drones may provKfe better results.
Fiwre 11 (left) Bien prfrrecapture, Figure 12 lrightl. Bien returning to Dao Tien after intervention. 4. Endangered Prlmate Research Dao Tien earries out con5tsnt rearch on nutrition, captive behaviour. post-release monitoring. including the continual testing out new teletnety techniques for this genus. Onsile capacrf(ies increased with post-mortem sample collection to ensure as much dats is gathered at all times. Identifd issue: Due lo Covid and the inability for search studenls to visil onsite. Wielnamese or Inlernalional. research has been limited. Intemalional experts such as our Veterinary support teams have also been unable to Iravel to Vietnam. forcing EAST to firKI solutions within country. This has triggered greater o)Ilal)oration within Vietnam with specialists. such as wildlife velerirtarians. S. Captive Breeding. Dao Tien does not a¢livety seek lo breed individuals and tsrries out an ongoing program of ontraception. Breeding is only permitted in individuals in the final stsges of pre-reaSe. However sometimes contraception does not work. This year we had an infant gibbon bom in phase 1 caged enclosure. 1 Bengal slow kjris and tsmn pygmy slow loris. All these infants will be managed for futu lease polenlial. Figure 13 Ileft}. Nomascus gabriellae infant and Figure 14. Nycticebus pygmaeus famity with new b)m twins.
