Friends of St Mary’s Trust, Balcombe for Year 2022

The Trust is wholly independent of St Mary’s PCC and exists as a link between the wider community and the historic church building of St Mary’s Church. The Trustees during 2022 were Charles Wilson (Chair) Rosemary Corder, Peter Huxley (Treasurer and Parish Council representative), Denise Vickerstaff, with Fr David King newly appointed ex-officio in December 2022.

In the past few years, the Trust has been building its reserves again, and waiting for the next project to emerge. It has now arisen, from the PCC Building sub-committee, who have now contracted to make significant repairs and maintenance to St Mary’s Church, a Grade 1 listed building. This follows an exhaustive Quinquennial report in late 2018, and although some external works were completed in 2019, some of them had to be delayed due to the Covid-19 Pandemic in early 2020.

Significant external and internal works are starting in January 2023, and are due to be completed by June 2023. At times, some facilities of the church will have to be suspended to allow safe works to occur.

The Trust is supporting this important and significant work. Donations during 2022 totalled £50,479. The trust received interest net of bank charges of £34, and the balance carried forward at 31 December 2022 was £75,971. This excludes one further donation of £10,000 which did not reach the account until shortly after year-end, so is recognised in the next financial year.

We are very grateful to all those who have donated to the Trust over the last year, enabling us to prepare and give support for the ongoing work to our Church building and churchyard.
