Annual Report of the Trustees of Eye Bach Choir 2023 to 2024 season

Our customary performance season runs from September to May. Two concerts took place in the autumn term, one in the spring term culminating in our 50° Anniversary concert in the summer term. A ‘Come and Sing Day’ was held in September and January.

The Musical Programme

This was a demanding schedule for the choir this year. Three substantial concerts took place and there was a series of sectional rehearsals especially leading up to the Bach Mass in C- Minor in May. The choir worked hard to learn the pieces and Leslie spent additional time holding extra rehearsals.

Saturday 11" November 2023 — Vivaldi Gloria: JS Bach Jesu Priceless Treasure

The first concert of our 50" Anniversary season took place in Eye Parish Church. Accompanied by organ, the choir sang a programme including works performed in the 40° Anniversary concert in 2014. These wereJ S Bach’s ‘Jesu Priceless Treasure’ and excerpts from ‘Judas Maccabaeus’ and ‘The Occasional Oratorio’ by G F Handel. Vivaldi’s ‘Gloria’ completed the programme.

Friday 15'" December 2023 — Gold and Silver Christmas Concert

Our annual Christmas concert took place in Eye Town Hall. It featured a gold and silver theme to emphasis our new partnership with the New Buckenham Silver Band. It proved to be a very happy occasion with a full audience enjoying the lively carols and Christmas music sung by the choir and played by the band.

Saturday 2"4 March 2024 — Haydn Nelson Mass and Mozart Solemn Vespers

This concert featured music composed in the last quarter of the 18" century by W A Mozart and J Haydn. The concert began with Mozart’s popular work for solo soprano — ‘Exsultate Jubilate’. This was sung by Madeline Boreham. The choir sang Mozart’s Solemn ‘Vespers’ and Haydn’s ‘Nelson Mass’ accompanied by the magnificent Binns organ in Eye Parish Church.

Saturday 25" May 2024 - 50% Anniversary Concert JS Bach Mass in B Minor

The season ended with an inspiring performance of the ‘Mass in C-Minor’ by choir J S Bach. The was accompanied by an orchestra of high-quality professional players with four excellent soloists ably led by Leslie Olive. To ensure all sections of the choir had sufficient forces to sing in Eye Parish Church some guest singers joined us for the performance. tn the event the Church was unavailable at short notice due to redecoration and the concert took place in Eye at the Town Hall. This venue was considerably smaller than planned and all seats were sold.

Administration and funding

Membership has remained steady with 45 singers. Each vocal section of the choir is led by a section leader who keeps the committee informed of any issues arising. They monitor attendance and help new members to settle in. They also ensure their singers are kept informed of sectional rehearsals and supervise the seating plans for concerts. Costs increased this year due to the decision to hold all concerts in Eye Parish Church which is costly to hire. In addition, the primary school next door is hired to provide space for tea during the rehearsal and concert and the after-show reception. The generosity of our sponsors enabled us to undertake this relatively expensive season. In particular, the choir would like to thank John Doe of Diss for supporting the whole year’s programme, Adnams Community Trust for their support for the March concert, Aspels for their donations for the Christmas concert and to the Postcode Places Trust for the sum of £5000 to support the concert in May.

(Please see the financial report for this year)

Committee and Organisation

The committee met nine times during the year. Each member of the committee contributes useful aspects to the running of the choir such as overseeing booking of venues for rehearsals, ‘come and sing Days’, concerts. ensuring hospitality such as refreshments at rehearsals and a bar for concerts. This year Steph Bowden has taken a strong lead in her role as librarian by ensuring all music is ordered in time and liaising with providers as necessary. Nicola Wheeler has been proactive in keeping the choir informed of events and rehearsal schedules in her role as membership secretary as well as Honorary Secretary. Christine Hooker has continued to do sterling work in her role as Box office manager. Another role which could be developed is a person to take the lead as concert manager for each event.

Marketing Sub-committee

The sub-group comprising Melissa Needham, Chrstine Hooker and Mick Morley, established last year, has continued to be influential in helping the committee to take decisions about marketing and publicity. There is now a very professional approach to our flyers and

banners. The committee has considered ticket prices, and ‘early-bird’ offers to increase ticket sales.

Programming Subcommittee

The choice of repertoire is made by the programming sub-committee after taking account of members suggestions. This year the sub-committee comprised Felicity Golding, Steph Bowden, Nicola Wheeler and Les Olive. The coming season’s repertoire was especially chosen to be a contrast to the classical programme of 2023 to 2024.

Concert management

This year staging concerts was more expensive than previously as it was decided to use the church as the venue for all three major concerts. It was decided to hire a professional staging and lighting company for these concerts. This was only made possible by the extraordinary generosity of our much-loved friend Sue Phelps who donated funds for this purpose. It provided the choir with robust staging and good lighting in the church. It also saved choir members from the heavy lifting and transporting of our own wooden rostra.

Members of the committee

| am grateful to the whole committee for its support and determination during this challenging year. | would like to give my thanks to Ann Hornung who is stepping down from her role as Honorary Treasurer. She has been a steadfast and rigorous custodian of our finances, and leaves us with a far healthier reserve than on her arrival. | am also immensely grateful to Biddy Channon, who is stepping down, for the role she has played on the committee as archivist, section rep and host for many rehearsals, auditions and parties (!)

Need for volunteers

| would like to end this report with a plea for volunteers to help us maintain this special choir and ensure it thrives for another 50 years. Please speak to any member of the committee if you have an idea you would like us to take on board or better still offer to help run yourself.

Our Annual General Meeting will be held on Friday 4°" October 2024
