STONE (STAFFS) & DISTRICT UNIVERSITY OF THE THIRD AGE CHAIR’S ANNUAL REPORT 2023 / 2024
This year has been a good year for Stone U3A despite some set backs. Membership has continued to rise with some sixty new members joining during the year, and there have been four new activities led by enthusiastic volunteers for the members to participate in, bringing the total to over fifty activities available to retired and people not in full time employment in the Stone area. This is by far the largest charitable organisation in the Stone area providing educational and recreational facilities at very little cost to members. We are always open to new members.
Stone U3A has arranged regular Speaker Events throughout the year, many proving extremely popular. These events are open to Stone U3A members and any of the wider public who may be interested in attending. We have also supported a number of events organised by other organisations and public bodies.
The Committee was disappointed by the Staffordshire Fire and Police Commissioner’s recent action to end the use of the Stone Fire Station Community Spaces by community groups such as Stone U3A. We are still at a loss to understand why spaces provided at public expense for community use have been confiscated in such a way.
I would like to thank all of the Group Leaders who give up their time every week to organise and resource our many activities. Without them Stone U3A would simply not exist. I would also like to thank both past and present Committee members for their time and support through out the year.
