Devon Opera CIO
Report of the Trustees for the Year Ended 31 December 2024
The trustees present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31 December 2024.
OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES
Objectives and aims
The charity's aims are to provide education, training and experience to young people through the medium of opera performance.
Review of the year Review of 2024-25
The Trustees and Board continue to meet regularly to ensure Devon Opera fulfils its aims of bringing professional opera, supported by a small chamber orchestra, sung in the original language and encouraging young singers and musicians. We increased the number of performances spread throughout the year, and their geographical spread to cover mid and east Devon. Our main production, La Boheme, sold well and received excellent reviews. Under the leadership of Company Director Anna Gregory our outreach to schools has increased and continues to develop. A matinee performance of La Boheme was performed for schools and was well supported. We also offered young people opportunities to develop skills in various aspects of production, lighting, costume and stage management. All our Trustees and Board Members contribute practically to the smooth running of performances and we are blessed with a committed, interested and supportive Patron and Vice Patrons.
Plans for 2026
Our main production Bizet’s Carmen takes place on 25th and 26th July 2026 at the Northcott Theatre in Exeter. As a result of the success of La Boheme performed at the Northcott’s smaller theatre, the Barnfield, we were invited to be the sole production of professional opera at the main theatre. Planning for Carmen is well in hand and auditions have been undertaken by our Company Director together with our Director of Music. Plans are also underway to expand “O” is for Opera, our outreach programme for schools, and to that end have recruited a potential new Trustee with appropriate skills who will be considered for appointment by the Trustees at their November meeting. Planning for 2027 is also on our Agenda and we are hopeful of taking our work into North Devon. We continue to search for sponsorship and are grateful for the generosity of many of our Friends and Supporters.
